I think that it’s now safe to say that we Texans now live in a failed state.  30 years of GOP rule, setting our own standard, living the “Texas Dream,” which they’ve bragged about relentlessly…and let

So where do I send the paperwork to get my future Muslim Fundamentalist Private School certified to get some of these sweet, sweet taxpayer provided school vouchers?

Very glad to be out of public education today, although my job still depends on working with school districts to serve their most challenging (and expensive) students. We work with kids that typically cost districts $40,000-$60,000 per student per year because of the services the district is legally obligated to provide.

Private schools will not take these kids under any circumstances. The ecosystem works because there are enough kids that require the typical educational structure to offset the costs. Vouchers eventually remove enough of those kids that the system starts to crumble. It won’t be this year or even next, but the long term plan has been set in motion.

Enjoy spending your tax money on schools with no academic accountability ratings, no requirement to provide certified teachers, no requirement to provide special education services, no obligation to accept kids from tough circumstances, and no legal requirement to report staff fired for questionable behavior with students.

I also hope that the residents of the 158 Texas counties that don’t even have a private school enjoy paying for private education for reasonably well off suburbanites who already have access to good public schools.

Everything republicans have ever preached about accountability for public schools is a farce.

And not accountable to our elected school boards. Just over there stealing out money and handing it off to their private equity buddies.

Complain about wasteful spending in eduction.

Solution: hand money over to schools with zero oversight, accountability, or regulations.

The sad part is that even if this platonically perfectly, even if we did get really high quality private schools that took all of our students, regardless of disability, and did a great job educating them and blew the Public School system away....it would still be disastrous since this would pretty much only happen in urban and suburban areas. The rural parts of the state and the small towns would still be screwed.

I know. We did this when the Democrats controlled Texas. For them. We agreed to share our tax money with them because we wanted to help.

And they hate us for it.

Are there limitations on who can receive the vouchers?

There was a back and forth when an amendment was presented, the gop challenged the dem to present a number of how many billionaires there are in Texas and how many of them have kids school age. Thats the level of thought that went into it.
the dem did have a good poke about Elon being a resident and having double digit offspring.

Keep the poorly educated poorly educated. It’s the GQP’s base.

Now they are pushing hard on property tax rebates for those who choose to pull out of public ed and send their kids to private.   This could be even more devastating to the small rural schools due to how many they stand to lose to home schooling.  Especially in the elementary years.  Then after jr high, they want to send them back to the public system for a variety of reasons.  A public ISD that will be damaged by the loss of those tax rebates in the lower grades.

Future generations will be indoctrinated in religious schools, taught a superficial understanding of history, and undereducated (at best) in hard science and critical thinking. A recipe for a permanent Republican majority.  And the best part--we're paying for it.

If the Robin Hood system is still going to exist, the City of Austin should refuse to make any more payments into it.

Is there any language about what types of private schools can qualify for the voucher funds?

We are currently watching Harvard, one of the most prestigious private academic institutions in the history of the world, battle our federal government for its future due to not sharing Trump’s values.

Once the Texas state government, which aspires to be as MAGA as possible, starts making payments to private K-12 schools, does anyone really think those schools will remain in control of their own curriculum and values?

Also, more and more homes are owned by investors, private equity, etc.   you think they will keep paying property taxes.  This would be an automatic and immediate funding disaster.   Fuck these people

But there will be a new level of private school where tuition is $10k per year and the kids don’t learn shit as there are 100 of them in some free church basement doing fuckall while one or two adults are in  corner counting their million dollars.

Also this. The fundies are going to have a field day with this grifting opportunity. They’ll be running glorified daycares in their basements.

Could we have another housing bubble blow up and end up with the schools holding a lot of properties?    And even then, in that depressed market i would assume those with huge money would swoop in and buy those properties dirt cheap on the courthouse steps?  Just seems tailor made to push more wealth into the oilgarch's accounts.

The billionaire preacher who bought this bill is the founder of Midland Classical Academy. Now, all of his friends get a 10k break on tuition. A lot of skulduggery was necessary to create this coincidence.
