February 23, 20214 yr Not sure where to put this; crosses over into DT and even CR. Gene was an amazingly great keyboardist originally from LA, where he was a member of the Blasters back in their heyday...I believe he moved to Europe for a few years and then settled in Austin where he played with the Fab T-Birds for many years. He might well have been the greatest living blues / boogie-woogie pianist on the planet. And he froze to death in his Austin home during this storm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqch2OZQUzw Per Alejandro Escovedo, he lost power for five days and died there at home.
February 23, 20214 yr Shit. Makes it through five days of that, then dies of hypothermia a day before it hits 75 degrees.
February 23, 20214 yr RIP, Gene. Sorry you had to go out like this. Loved hearing you with the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
February 23, 20214 yr I didn't know him, but a shitton of locals loved him. I got WAY into The Blasters in the '80s, so I guess I had heard his stuff. Freezing to death. What the fuck?
March 7, 20214 yr Goddammit. I found out about it from this thread. That dude was amazingly talented.
March 7, 20214 yr This pic reminds me that I need to ask Steve (owner of CC) again about buying the red sparkles. Very few people played that set more than my dad and I’ve wanted to add them to my stable for a while.
