No. 15 Women’s Golf finishes second at ANNIKA Intercollegiate

LAKE ELMO, Minn. — The No. 15 Texas Women's Golf team shot the best final round of the field and climbed the leaderboard to finish in second-place on Wednesday at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M at the Royal Golf Club.

The Longhorns shot a 5-under third round and finished the tournament with a combined 2-under score of 862. Wake Forest took top honors with a 6-under 858.

Sophomore All-American Bohyun Park showed why she is one of the best players in the country as she finished tied for second-place with a 7-under 209, two shots back of Amanda Sambach of Virginia, who was the medalist at 9-under.

The Longhorns made four birdies combined on either the 17th or 18th holes to close with a strong finish to the tournament.

The Lineup

• Sophomore Bohyun Park finished tied for second in her first tournament of the season. Park made four birdies and one bogey in her final round, which included a birdie on her final hole.

• Cindy Hsu moved up the leaderboard 17 spots in the final two rounds, including five shots in the third round. Hsu shot a 2-under 70 on the final day of the tournament.

• Bentley Cotton was consistent for the Longhorns with rounds of 72-74-73 and finished tied for 19th for the tournament.

• Sophie Guo shot her best round in the final round, a 1-under 71. Guo made four birdies for the round.

• Faith Kilgore improved each day of the tournament and fired a 2-over 74 on the final day.

Up next the Longhorns compete in the Mo'Morial hosted by Texas A&M in Bryan, Texas, Sept. 20-21.

Head Coach Ryan Murphy on the ANNIKA Intercollegiate

"I'm happy with the result. There are lots of positives and obviously second in this field is strong.  We are capable and will simply continue to work and sharpen a few areas.

I'm happy with the effort, but definitely know that we could have won this tournament.  As usual, we'll evaluate and try to improve as we go."

On the play of individual golfers

"Individually, Bo and Cindy played great. Bo has her game in a good place right now and it showed this week. She was rock-solid start to finish.  Cindy top-10 in her debut is outstanding.  I'm proud of them both!"

"Both Bentley and Sophie finished great today which helped us slip into second. I'm particularly proud of that fight. Overall solid weeks for both but I know they want more!  Faith started slow but improved as she went through the week. I like seeing that!

Bohyun Park on her individual play and the play of the team

"I was super pumped for the season to start and I was just really excited to be able to get out there with the team and have fun. My play this week has boosted my confidence going into this season. I've left some putts out there but I also made some clean up putts which overall I feel like my putting has been more stable than it was before. Our team had a solid start and finish. We played our final round 5-under which was really strong for us and showed us what we are in capable of."

Texas finished 7th place out of 9 teams at the Big12 womens championship this weekend. Limping into the NCAA regionals next

Texas finished 3rd at the Palm Beach Regional and advanced to the NCAA championship - one of only 4 programs to do so the last 7 seasons, with USC, Stanford and FSU.

Barring an absolute collapse, Texas is going to advance to match play. 18 shots clear of the cut line.

It would be nice to be seeded high in the top 8 though and avoid Stanford.

Quite a bit of directors cup implications in this tournament

For sure, but based on projections Stanford is expected to win and we're not even expected to make the top 8. We are the only ones capable of really improving our standings based on projections.

But it would be nice to see Stanford go down in the quarters of match play to help us even more.

Actually, looks like the predicted finish was T-5th for Texas. Not sure how that was the predicted finish when they're ranked 11th. Maybe it's based on the current seedings at the NCAA championships.

Looks like it will be Texas vs FSU in the quarterfinals unless Texas makes up a 2 stroke lead to Wake Forest over these last few holes. Then it would be Texas vs aggy.

All that really mattered is avoiding Stanford and Wake Forest, in the quarters, who look like the top 2 teams. But anything can happen in match play.

Texas within 1 stroke of Wake Forest. Not sure what the tiebreaker is but you just know this is going to find a way to be Texas vs aggy in the quarters.

Texas vs aggy it is in the quarterfinals. You just knew it was coming.

Yup...  Texas #2 seed  vs  aggy #7 seed

That was a good round today. Anything can happen in match play.

aggys #5 looks pretty bad. Think aggy will try to pair her with 1 of our top golfers and just concede that point.

Wake Forest player, on the 18th hole, missed a 3-foot birdie putt and parred the hole…Horn player birdied the hole to give Horns the 2nd slot.

How is that done??

Does each coach just submit their order of 5 players and then learn later what the player match ups are??

I really like how Ryder Cup does it.

Unless it's changed a coach picks a player then the opposing coach picks who they match up with. Then you switch order with next pick and opposing coach picks again.

I think we were probably going to win the tiebreaker anyways with low round score.

That's how Ryder Cup does it.     Thx

Anything can happen in match play but aggy's #5 was at least 14 strokes behind every Texas golfer in stroke play.

If aggy doesn't think there's any chance she can beat anybody the smart play is to just concede the point to one of our top golfers. If it plays out that way.

Always interesting strategies in matching players up.  That terrible #5 player might be better suited for Pairing #4 or #5.

Don't want to give up a point too early in the match where 3pts wins...

Hsu down 2 through 10
Guo up 2 through 9
Heo up 1 through 8
Park down 1 through 8
Cotton tied through 6

3 of 4 QF matches are tied 2-2-1 right now, except the 4/5 matchup (4 SCar up 3-1-1on 5 USC)

aggy up 3-1-1

Getting dicey

Hsu lost 3&2
Guo still up 1 through 14
Everyone else tied - Heo at 13, Park at 12 and Cotton at 11

Park missed about a 3 foot birdie to win the hole a few moments ago, could have used that one.

Guo wins 2&1

Heo down 1 through 16
Park tied through 14
Cotton tied through 14

So which golfer on A&M is supposedly the shitty one? All of these contests are tight

I think it was Fernandez Garcia Poggio.

Heo back to tied through 17
Both Park and Cotton down 1.  Park through 16 and Cotton through 15.
