Leaving Portland today after a couple of days away. This is our second time so we were able to hit places we couldn't on our last visit. Here are some highlights:

-Casco Bay Tour to House Island (private island with old fort on it- near Ft Gorges Island)

20250722_181839.thumb.jpg.5fd640ca9f1b6f5c132bb99271688e31.jpg

-Hike around Wolfe Neck State Park in Freeport followed by trip to LL Bean Outlet (worth noting there's a whole outlet shopping center there, so it's much more than just LL Bean).

20250722_181752.thumb.jpg.0d59765f5d409dd99337dec909d3de07.jpg

-Ferry to Peaks Island and bike ride around the island: found a hidden beach off the main road that was really cool and took some side trails to the Battery Steel fortifications, which were extremely eery partially due to some kids walking through the dark structure making haunting sounds. Once you're in there, it's pitch black and there are rooms and offshoots on the right that are not visible here.

20250722_182836.thumb.jpg.58457e27c74814b30525e8f42dbf0d20.jpg

Beach on Peaks Island:

20250722_183555.thumb.jpg.bf3ed4abf75d976e909194368057b543.jpg

-Drive to Mackworth Island and Baxter State Park. Really pleasant (and easy) trails and good views. A consistent breeze on the ocean side made it ideal weather on a warm Maine day. There's a kind of strange "fairy village" and School for the Deaf that add some interesting quirks to the hike.

Food:

-Eventide. Give yourself at least an hour of time to wait (you can leave while you wait). Alternatively, The Honey Paw next door is owned by the same people and they even share a kitchen, but it doesn't have nearly the same wait as Eventide. It's an Asian fusion restaurant.

-DiMillos on the Water. Nice views, great food. Highly recommend the clam chowder and pecan encrusted haddock. Waiter who worked there for 35 years said it's by far his favorite dish. There's also a piece of the Berlin Wall out front.

20250722_181716.thumb.jpg.c3e98ea7b5b7a0fda2edc06a7a4121dc.jpg

-Bite of Maine. Nice place for lunch and, in my experience, the best place to get whoopie pies.

-Tandem Coffee and Bakery. I cannot emphasize this enough. This cinnamon roll was incredible, as was the blueberry lemon poppyseed scone.20250722_181603.thumb.jpg.a80f725e17f98cb6b25e0031a2469787.jpg

We left talking about how we could make it work to buy a small cabin to visit regularly while renting it out during travel season. Open to ideas and suggestions on this. There's lots to do and enjoy in this area. We hope to bring our kids next time.

Currently making our way through Maine. Couple of days in Portland. Heading to Bangor today for a show, then driving down to Acadia for a couple of days.

It’s been unseasonably hot, finally cooling off a bit today.

Yesterday, we went out to the Two Lights area and hiked around.

Took a boat out in the morning looking for whales. Didn’t see any, but did come across a school of stripers hammering pogies….killed me not to have a rod. Got a great view of the lighthouse, though.

And, will update more on the entertaining part of the evening…had dinner at the bar at Blythe and Burrows. The attractive curvy brunette next to my wife struck up a convo, and they became fast friends. Like…even a bit handsy. Wanted to connect on Instagram, we did so. As we left, I told my wife that I thought there was an 80% chance she was trying to pick her/us up. Got back to the hotel, sleuthed on her a bit, found out more about her. Revised my assessment: it was a 100% chance she was trying to pick her up. Nice.

Best whale watching experience we had was out of Provincetown, did one out of Boothbay Harbor and took forever to see 1 whale and a sunfish…

HOLY SHIT, JAY!! IT’S A BABY FUCKING WHALE… CALL THE AQUARIUM!

I look forward to seeing the posts on the "other" thread

Went out of Boston last year and saw many humpback and minke in addition to one large fin. Boat crew said the fin was a fairly rare sighting and the total number of whales we saw was the most they'd seen on a single trip in a couple years. It was pretty damn cool.

Headed up to Bangor for a show. Needed a lunch stop. Haddock sammich for the wife, haddock and the whole belly clams for me, at Day’s in Yarmouth.

The “reason” for the trip: to see Live and Collective Soul in concert (wife loves Live, we wanted to see them somewhere cooler than Texas).

Collective Soul actually put on a great show, fantastic fan service. Live was good, she enjoyed all the deep cuts, so all is good.

The crowd was….amazing. Pure Maine working class. Lotta Carhartt, Mercury outboard, Harley, and other assorted fishing and hunting gear in the crowd. Not a lotta fancy tourists.

After the show, we drove down towards Bar Harbor and just arrived at our cabin.

A couple years ago, we went to boston, and I had a really good stout near harvard. It was by a maine brewery called mast landing. The beer is gunner’s daughter.

I looked for it in every restaurant we went to last week. It was at only one of them. West Street Cafe in bar harbor.

Damn it was good.

Some shots from today.
Cottages were staying at, looking out over Salsbury Cove.
Wife’s pretty tasty breakfast sandwich: egg, sharp cheddar, blueberry jelly. It worked.
One of the scenes from the top of Cadillac mountain (it was rainy today, so crowds weren’t bad).
Wild blueberries on a trail. Due to weather, we had it all to ourselves. It was kinda awesome. And yeah, we ate more than a couple, they’re light years better than the giant tasteless ones in the store.
View of Jordan Pond as we started the loop hike.

We had a good dinner at Geddy's in Bar Harbor,  2 years ago. I had a sampler plate with chowder, a lobster roll, and a slice of blueberry pie.

I also had a beer with blueberries floating in it.

My wife ordered a kid's meal, and it was served on a frisbee.

Acadia. View from our cottage. And my breakfast, a dozen Bar Harbor blondes bought from a garage on the honor system.

Woman in the picture to her child: "Look at that man over there. A lobster sandwich in his lap, popover next to him, a gas station burrito in each pocket, and what appears to be a bottle of hot sauce on a string hanging from his neck."

View from morning coffee with the wife. Salsbury cove, in front of our cottage. Lobstermen checking their pots on a falling tide.

And, we stopped for a snack at the Shuck Station in Damariscotta.

Glad they had something for my non-oyster-fan wife: scallop ceviche, which was crazy good:

And my order:

a8cadc1237d6c1fd60eb4ca66eab9243.jpg

Jesus. Tapdancing. Christ.

Blackstones: the most balanced of the briny oysters. Kind of a three-way tie with the Bar Harbor Blondes and the Pemaquids.

Norumbegas: the boldest of the briny ones.

John’s River: the most balanced, briny start, sweet finish.

Heron Island: outstanding…but 4th place on this plate.

I may order a couple more Johns River and Blackstones, because life is for living.

Maine oysters are the best I’ve ever had, fellas. And I’ve eaten a LOT of oysters.

No one is happier to see you leave Maine more than the Oyster population. Joey Chestnut thinks you should’ve cut back some.

Joey can’t shuck his own, the wuss.

Shit, I've knocked that out at dollar oyster happy hour sorry, we're not allowed to call it that in Boston.

All I have to add is this.  Last late September I went out to Great Pond (one of the Belgrade lakes northwest of Augusta).  Water was PERFECT - people were taking their gear out of the lake due to the cold but the last of the summer months sun still had the water just right.

So recommendation for the late summer.

Also, I don't remember the names of all of them because I was tipsy, but the farm breweries around there are all nice.

Cross-posting from the oyster thread, but the Hampton Inn on Franklin Street is up a very short back stairs from Eventide.  It might as well be the hotel bar.

This is where I’ll be for the next four days, if anyone wants to pop in and hear some hot takes.

Not quite Maine but Hampton Beach, NH is close enough. The wife and I did a bus trip over for the HB Seafood Festival first time doing so.

I flip back n forth on hot n buttered or cold lobster roll as a favorite but today I’d say cold won out. Wife isn’t much of a seafood eater unless it’s snow crab legs but was happy with the tater twisters.

Was surprised how trashy/cheesy Hampton Beach turned out, it’s basically Galveston of the Northeast from what I remember Galveston being. Unfortunately, saw some of this shit also…
