PENSACOLA, Fla. -- A Pensacola mother and daughter were arrested by the FDLE on Monday for unauthorized access into hundreds of student accounts -- allegedly using the access to cast fraudulent homecoming court votes.

Agents with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement arrested Laura Rose Carroll, 50, and her 17-year-old daughter Emily Rose Grover on:

one count each of offenses against users of computers, computer systems, computer networks, and electronic devices (a 3rd-degree felony)
unlawful use of a two-way communications device (a 3rd-degree felony)
criminal use of personally identifiable information (a 3rd-degree felony)
conspiracy to commit these offenses (a 1st-degree misdemeanor)

The investigation began in November 2020 when the Escambia County School District contacted FDLE to report unauthorized access into hundreds of student accounts.

Carroll was an assistant principal at Bellview Elementary School, while her daughter was a student at Tate High School.

"The investigation found that Carroll...and her daughter...had accessed student FOCUS accounts," the FDLE says in a release. "Carroll had district-level access to the school board’s FOCUS program, which is the school district’s student information system. FOCUS users are required to change their password every 45 days and Carroll’s annual training for the 'Staff Responsible Use of Guidelines for Technology' was up to date."

The FDLE says that in October 2020, hundreds of votes for Tate High School’s Homecoming Court voting were flagged as fraudulent, as 117 votes originated from the same IP address within a short period of time.

Grover was named Tate High School’s 2020 homecoming queen.

"Agents uncovered evidence of unauthorized access to FOCUS linked to Carroll’s cell phone as well as computers associated with their residence, with a total of 246 votes cast for the Homecoming Court," the FDLE says in a release. "Multiple students reported that the daughter described using her mother’s FOCUS account to cast votes. The investigation also found that beginning August 2019, Carroll’s FOCUS account accessed 372 high school records and 339 of those were of Tate High School students."

After reaching out to Dr. Timothy Smith, Superintendent of Escambia County Schools offered this statement:

The district isn’t able to divulge any additional information outside of what FDLE shared because of the nature of the investigation.
Superintendent Smith added that Carroll is currently suspended.

Carroll was booked into Escambia County Jail around 2:45 p.m. Monday and released at 3:15 p.m. on a $6,000 bond, according to jail records.

Carroll's daughter was taken into custody and transferred to the Escambia Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

The Office of the State Attorney, First Judicial Circuit will prosecute this case.

If she were a general-purpose Floriduh crackhead, that would make sense, but she's an elementary school principal, FFS.

Maybe it does make sense, after all.

I like that they verified IP addresses tied to votes.  I guess when you peak in high school, you take it as seriously as you can.

Shades of the insurrection. "Hey, e'erbody! I committed a felony!!!! How do you like my dress and tiara!"

Mom loses career. Daughter gets a felony record instead of a college application  bullet point.

Hell, even the graphic above above shows signs of developmental difficulties.

Everybody thought James T. was a rebel when he hacked the Kobayashimaru.

I fail to see the difference.

If that's the dad in the first picture, seems like he could have threatened to put a mob hit out on anybody that would deny his precious her crown.

Maybe it's not the humidity, but more a lack of washing that crap.

The article is unclear about whether Mom was involved in changing the votes, or if the daughter stole her password/access and did it all .  They said both Mom and Daughter accessed the records, but Mom was given access and I assume had to do so as part of her job.  The way they explained that Mom had the training about changing passwords every 45 days seems to imply that they are holding her accountable for not having done that, because otherwise I am not sure why it is mentioned.

This.

I am personally aware of a district in Texas that back in the 1980s went to their local counsel and asked what could be done to prevent the election of the first Black homecoming king.

To the firm’s credit, the answer the district got was “you can’t do shit, and if anyone else but that kid is elected you’re going to need to find a different firm to represent you in the future.”

Wtf cares who the homecoming king except the kids in the school.

Eh for homecoming Queen in Florida wouldn’t it make more sense for the school to give both a paddling and send em on their way?
