Miller's stock has gone down since then. He may miss the tournament a 2nd straight season.

He wouldn't be a terrible hire but I think Texas can and probably will do better.

I agree completely

What about Pacers assistant Jim Boylen? Too old?

This is the most baffling suggestion I have ever seen. Ya dude totally, let's get the coach who had an archaic offense, players hated, and totally bombed as a head coach in his most recent head role who hasn't even coached in college in 15 years. What about him makes you want him? Why did you even think of him? What is wrong with you?

Izzo, Pop, Carlisle. Those are good coaching trees. He's never had the talent and resources Texas could offer.

My buddy worked for him at Utah. You could do worse, but it would be difficult.

Edit to add... Another buddy of mine was the coach at Idaho during boylens first or second year at Utah. Idaho was playing a money game in salt lake and early in the week boylen said it was Idaho's Superbowl.

Idaho beat their ass and my buddy had brought an old ass Superbowl hat that you would get for like an SI subscription in 1992 and he puts it on after the game for the handshake line.  It was glorious.

Boylen is a psycho and a bad coach.

I haven’t been in the new Moody Arena. Did we actually hang a banner for Shaka’s team winning the NIT? Just asking?

Yeah but RT has no NBA experience and if RT has any NBA connections I'd imagine they're much weaker.

I just can't imagine a world where TJ would have a ~$20 million school buyout but only a 4 million buyout if he left.

Or you could stop being a bitch about it and spend 10 seconds on google. From yesterday's Des Moines register.....

https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/college/iowa-state/basketball-mens/2025/02/28/iowa-state-basketball-tj-otzelberger-contract-extension-released-salary-raise-buyout/80774841007/

Quote

The full details of Iowa State men's basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger's contract extension that keeps him with the Cyclones through 2032 have been released.

....

Iowa State also acknowledges that Otzelberger has the right to accept another Division I coaching position or an NBA front-office or coaching job, and that the school would be entitled to a buyout.

Interestingly, his buyout was dropped from $18,225,000 to just $4 million. It cuts down even further to $2 million if Pollard is no longer the athletics director at Iowa State.

House a house

Snyder is either friendly with the $9.95ers or he's a notorious gossiper and they love it

whenever CDC does make his hire it’s not quinn snyder, and the guys like gerry get the information at the same time as/shortly after some of our own posters, that’ll be everyone’s reminder that those guys don’t know shit.

just went ahead and reached out to someone i trust, and he said that this search will *not* just be cdc making the call. said that cdc will be involved, but that the big money collective has gotten together and have basically said, “its time” to make a big boy move, and as such they will have a lot of say and sway in the matter. said oats is at the top of the list.

Good. If the money men are on board, a buyout won’t stop Texas

OMG JAY WRIGHT?

I'll believe we are paying an $18 million buyout in basketball when I see it.

4 years ago, we "waited" 4 days to contact Chris Bearrd so his buyout would drop from $5 million to $4 million.

I mean, yeah, but I feel like the BMDs got a taste of what a real coach can do.  And they want it again

we broke the bank for beard, got to no.1 in kenpom in november of his second year, and made the elite 8 that same season *after* enduring the biggest scandal of the cbb season. with how badly we’ve fallen off since then it will not surprise me to see us break the bank again. moody sent we wasn’t built to be half full.

I would be thrilled if that is the case. When it comes time to actually cut the check, we will see how serious they are.

$5.8 million to buy out Terry + another $1-2 million to buy out the rest of the staff + $18 million to buy out Oats + $6 million'ish annual salary he would likely command here + $2-3 million for his staff + an increase in NIL budget.

If you go down that road, you are probably looking at a $30-35 million (at least?) investment in the short term.

Hey, if anyone can get it done, it's CDC.  That's why we hired him.

If you aren’t a really good basketball fan, you probably only think of Texas basketball statically from the Barnes years between 2005-2010.

That is the only reason I could see someone thinking Quin Snyder is a “home run hire.”

If I had to choose between Q Snyder and RT, I actually think I'd go with RT.

It's hard to believe they get paid to be every bit as stupid as the average Surly poster. Fuck Quinn Snyder, fuck Jim Boylen, fuck the rookie at Drake. CDC ain't hiring scrubs. I have no clue who it will be, but I'm pretty sure I'll be f'n fine with it because CDC is guiding the process.

What kind of a moron WOULDN'T wait 4 days when you know you have the guy locked up and nobody else even thinks he's in play. Why give an extra mil to those dick bags in Lubbock? That has no impact on our ability to pay a larger amount of needed.

Seems to be a foregone conclusion that Chicago & Donovan will part ways this summer.

But here's the last news on his contract anyways...

https://www.chicagotribune.com/2022/11/29/chicago-bulls-signed-coach-billy-donovan-to-a-years-long-contract-extension-ahead-of-2022-23-season/

The Chicago Bulls signed coach Billy Donovan to a contract extension this summer ahead of the 2022-23 season, retaining him for at least four more years.

The Bulls confirmed the signing, which The Athletic initially reported Tuesday. Donovan’s original contract ran through the 2023-24 season, and the extension reportedly will increase that by “several more years.”

Btw he's 59 y/o

So, not ancient but not young either!

I'll throw an offbeat one into the hat just for fun...

Dad Monty Williams got absolutely MoneyWhipped into coaching Detroit, which he had already turned down twice!
He had been telling everyone he wasn't ready to coach again yet.

As expected, someone who takes a job they don't want, doesn't do well.
And he was fired after the first year, with $65M remaining on his contract.  $65M!

Coached an NBA finals and two Conference Semi Finals for PHX Suns.

Technically, he was on the NBA Finals winning coaching staff for the 2005 San Antonio Spurs.  So, you could sorta say he coached an NBA finals twice and has a .500 record.  hahah

I don’t think he’s on the list or that he’d be interested (especially if Baylor opens) but what McCasland has done at tech this year is great.

He's a great coach.  I would absolutely love to have him here, but it'll never happen.

Ironically, last year those of us who suggested he might be a great candidate were roundly scolded.

I was one of those receiving the scolding.  Wrong forum, but I was also mocked for saying midseason that Golden would test well and go in the first couple of rounds.
