UT's next basketball coach - discussion/debate [Sean Miller Hired]

I remember that he basically told his own AD to fuck off and refused to answer questions from his bosses when the scandal first broke. LSU had to suspend him for his non-cooperation. From what I can tell from comments on this board and elsewhere, Beard was fired more for how he responded to the allegations rather than the allegations themselves, which were dropped. I doubt CDC wants to bring in another guy that will just tell his bosses to fuck off to save his own hide. Wade just doesnt seem to fit the CDC mold, imo.

Todd Golden only had San Francisco on his resume before Florida hired him. I don't buy the "he has to have built a program at the D1 level" stuff. If a guy can coach hire him.

Impossible.  No track record building a P4 program.  Hard pass.  #surly

Yeah the idea that UT can only hire "certain coaches" in basketball is absurd. It screams "we can't identify talented people".

There's no guarantee in any hire. Lots of people were happy with the Shaka hire and we know how that turned out. Football FINALLY went outside their usual criteria and it's been a major success to this point. Basketball should do the same. Identity the most talented coach that you can bring in and hire him.

Only making it out of the first round 5 out of 12 seasons is pretty underwhelming when he was able to hand Adidas a shopping list of recruits

This is wrong. He’s coached in 13 tournaments and been to the 2nd weekend 8 times, with a chance for 9 this weekend. His 22-12 tournament record is really good.

You make it sound so easy.

Oh nice, McCollum potentially gets a couple of interesting tests.

McCollum vs. McCasland and then two of our potential future coaches likely against Pitino.

Then it’s Andy Enfield by a mile.

If you go to someone's profile, you can see when they last "Won" the day by having the post with the most likes in any given day.

We need a stupid button (only for use outside the CR) so that people can vote for stupid posts. Then you can go to someone's profile and see the last time they had the stupidest post of the day!

OK, so we're up to one.  Some would call it "the exception that proves the rule".

Ted Lasso.

Sounds like Iowa St coach might be a possibility.  Waiting to hear Self publicly say no thanks today since eliminated yesterday.

Tom Laundry. Get it right - Jerry.

Mark Few never struck me as a guy with a big ego. He had plenty of opportunities to move onto more prestigious coaching gigs  where he could make more money and recruit easier, and he was always content to stay at Gonzaga. Although, he also never won it all,  so maybe that's what holding him back.

RT isn't getting fired

But if he is, it should be [insert coach]

And if it's not [insert coach], it's because Texas doesn't care about winning

Bonus: But I don't even care about or watch basketball

So there are NO candidates.  Period.

Has no wife, therefore, is viable.

Per Chip on “The Flagship Podcast”, Wade wants/wanted Texas and the feeling was not reciprocated

I don't know why Texas fans can't wrap their heads around lying to your boss, university prez and the NCAA, even if you forgive the show cause, isn't going to be a plus in trying to get a high profile job, at a school that protects its brand and reputation at all costs

Wade was never getting a call back or an interview.

It's fascinating how so many Texas fans don't understand this.  You don't have to agree with it, but that's the way it is.

It’s baffling and embarrassing.

You don’t care about basketball but come into this forum to say which coach to hire or just to spew “I’m gLaD I dOn’T CaRe abOuT bAskEtbALl!

Mocking Spongebob Squarepants GIF

I mean, I don’t watch a lot of baseball except for when we get into the tournament. You’ll never find me in that forum saying who we should and shouldn’t hire and posting that I don’t care about baseball. (I wanted us to hire Schloss because I wanted him away from A&M so their no NC streak since 1939 could continue.)

When I say sometimes our fans are no different from A&M, this is what I mean.

Weren’t you just here saying RT wasn’t getting fired because it’s just basketball and the admin doesn’t care? Now you’re suggesting coaches?

And that he might be given two more years.

Gerry/Bobby candidate info:

Friday AM Update: Texas basketball and Rodney Terry

The Texas basketball staff is business as usual, as of late last night. The staff is scheduled to have meetings this morning with portal recruiting and high school recruiting the No. 1 topic.

Obviously, everyone and anyone around the program knows and understands what is going on.

The Longhorns are currently in the final two for 5-star power forward Koa Peat (Gilbert, Az./Perry) along with Arizona State. The decision is considered a toss up right now. He is the younger brother of NFL offensive tackle Andrus Peat. Andrus Peat chose Stanford over Texas, USC and others coming out of high school as a 5-star recruit.

Terry's future at Texas ...

Nothing has changed on our end at OTF. We continue to believe that Terry has coached his last game at Texas.

There is a lot of timing with the movement, as Bobby Burton wrote yesterday.

"But first and foremost is the modus operandi of Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte and the timing of how he fires and hires coaches.

For example, consider the timing of CDC's hirings of the two highest profile coaches at Texas - Steve Sarkisian and Jim Schlossnagle.

Tom Herman was officially fired on Jan. 2, 2021. Steve Sarkisian was hired later that same day, on Jan. 2, 2021.

As for Schlossnagle, previous Texas baseball coach David Pierce was informed he would not be retained on June 24, 2024. Just one day later, Schlossnagle was hired, on June 25.

In other words, during high-profile hirings, Del Conte's m.o. is crystal clear. He likes to do things cleanly, moving from one head coach to another with immediacy. As one source put it, CDC and Texas do not want to do anything considered merely "patchwork". They want a replacement ready to go prior to releasing the other head coach."

The Texas brass is well into the process of vetting candidates.

Some notes on names of interest ...

OnTexasFootball believes Sean Miller and Tommy Lloyd are legitimate names to know. Those are not the only legit names to know.

Sean Miller's agent is Jimmy Sexton.

Tommy Lloyd's agent is also the agent of Rodney Terry. Lloyd has a nine million dollar buyout.

Names such as Doug McDermott, Todd Golden, Ryan Odom (VCU), Mick Cronin and 2-3 others have been vetted on some level. Also, yes, some unicorns have been too - but they aren't truly realistic at this point. In the last go round prior to Rodney Terry's hiring, contact was made with the agents of Mark Few, Billy Donovan and Quin Snyder. All said no at the time.

Asked a college basketball coaching source about potential fits at Texas ...

On Sean Miller, "Terrific coach. Has the type of offensive system Texas needs. Would win at Texas. Understands demands of big time job."

On Tommy Lloyd, "Great offensive system. Very impressive recruiting strategy. His assistant Jack Murphy, and Tommy are a strong combo in international recruiting. Would be a good fit at Texas."

I asked the college coach about Bill Self for fun. "He would be an amazing fit at Texas. Would crush it. No question." To be clear, OTF is not saying Self is a realistic possibility.

To be clear, OnTexasFootball is not saying the next Texas coach is one of these three.

Chris Farley, duh! I bet he played with Blake Shelton on that UIL tournament

So every coach would be great at Texas??? (Except RT, of course.) CDC's job is easy.
