March 23Mar 23 Popular Post Gerry on NIL Was told about 20 minutes ago that Texas is expected to see a basketball all together NIL increase into the 4.8-5 million range for next season. This season's roster was 3.7-3.8 million. That increase would place Texas in the top 15 range nationally based on numbers currently
March 23Mar 23 I think CDC's goal was to get a coach who would raise the floor. Then if you pair that with NIL, good assistants, and local talent, you can reach higher, and get lucky with E8 or FF every now and then. Absent a few coaches who are already at bluebloods, that's all you can ask for in mens CBB. I think I see the logic behind the hire.

If it were modern-day John Wooden with the buyout, the story would be different. No "modern day Wooden" will ever exist. It used to be that the tournament regions were the actual regions. No one in the West Region was any good except UCLA. He had an annual cake walk to the Final Four, which made recruiting easy. He was an excellent coach, but so many of those UCLA tournament wins would not have happened in today's set up.

March 23Mar 23 Miller is coming in as the most credentialed hire in Texas men’s basketball history with 4 EEs and 4S16s. I don’t follow baseball so did David Pierce come to Texas with that type of record?

U$C was also damn good under Bob Boyd.

Terry spent a ton of his budget on a one and done player at the expense of the rest of the roster. We need someone to build a complete roster and to know what that should look like.

Bill self? Come on. I’m not sure Lloyd is worth a 9m buyout. Give miller some resources and let’s see what happens

I’m not as connected anymore as I was but I know there were people that wanted nothing to do with NIL under Terry. This played out exactly as it was expected. Beard set this program back 5-7 years and Terry was never going to succeed. 7 minutes ago, Newy25 said: It’s not just NIL compared to other schools. The thing with NIL and Terry is that he chose the socialist approach in 2023-2024 and the capitalist approach in 2024-2025 (no CR, just the easiest way to frame it). Neither made a ton of sense in either cycle. Then, the guy was a terrible money raiser with the backers. He was uninspiring and lacked charisma. Guys who often say “yes” said “not right now”. It wasn’t like Texas was a have-not, but very much not a big time “have” with him at the helm. The update on NIL from Gerry is tempered with his own skepticism of the actual NIL talk right now. I’m not going to say that anyone is energized by Miller, because I simply do not know yet. What I do know is that the committed floor is the range Gerry quoted. If Miller comes in and shows that he can put together a final four-esque team quickly, the support is there.

March 23Mar 23 This hire seems fine. I don’t love it, but I get it. He’s better than Terry and I’m sure there are good reasons for taking him over some other potential hires. I’m whelmed and willing to see how he does before reacting. It’s like getting a really nice new fleece for Christmas. Not exciting but you can’t complain.

Of course other teams will probably be increasing too but Gerry has mentioned that some coaches are already nervous about what their share of the house settlement money will be.
March 23Mar 23 He's got a son named Austin, so there's that... a bit of a red flag he couldn't get to one final four at Arizona his checkered past is stuff that is all legal now and tons of coaches were doing. I agree this is a high floor hire. we'd kill for the Arizona run he had for the first 10 years. If Miller was his guy, CDC had to be shitting bricks when we got matched up with Xavier on the play in. that would be damn funny to be a fly on the wall there.

Yeah but it includes revenue sharing. Plus whatever the oil douche puts on top of that.
March 23Mar 23 If you’re going to compete in the SEC you’re going to have to sacrifice a few ethics along the way. Good hire.

It’s not even that. We’re under 5 million all in(including revenue sharing and additional NIL). Seems like we are going into next year with a top 15 budget for this year. Makes no sense. Perhaps @David Dennisonis right and the money just doesn’t give a fuck about basketball enough to actually compete at highest levels. Edited March 23Mar 23 by BurntOrange&White

Basketball really only has 2-3 big time benefactors from the business world. Other than Durant’s shoe contract that diverted money to Texas Basketball I’ve never really heard of the former players who went on to the NBA doing anything. Im not saying they don’t or haven’t, but I’ve just never heard it. All I can say is that if you want more money diverted to basketball, then drink more Tito’s, I guess.
March 23Mar 23 My long standing conspiracy theory is several BMDs (and a lot of our fans) don’t want basketball to be so successful that it could rival baseball. But, basketball can’t be so shameful that it embarrasses The University. With this new setup, I’m wondering how all of that will change if we come close to emulating the Barnes 2000s success.

March 23Mar 23 Texas wanted to hire Miller last time but circumstances and the fact he lost to Texas and Terry it didn't happen. This time Miller beat Texas and Terry, and he got the job. So, if Texas and Terry had beaten Miller and Xavier, which they should have. Then Texas loses to Illinois in the first round, which most likely would have happened. Does Texas still name Miller as head coach, if Terry was fired. Would seem a little awkward.

Do you know of any of our former players besides KD who has contributed significantly? Because if you do that would be the only relevant comment to the rather non controversial post that I made. I’m really kind of interested in the question because I legitimately don’t know the answer.
