What sucks is that we're not even to conference play, and I feel like "Well maybe after a total rebuild we will be where we want to be...."

i mean, who from this team projects to be a reliable, SEC quality player next year? do we have anyone who projects to be in the top 25-30 players in the league next year? i can’t even figure out where we go from here. i feel like there’s some serbian u-16 team that we need to start recruiting HARD, just bring them over 5-6 at a time, otherwise i don’t know where we go from here.

figured i’d x/post this to the appropriate thread.

it’s become apparent to me that, for whatever reason, CDC doesn’t give a shit about men’s basketball. maybe the BMD’s don’t either so there’s no pressure on him, but when you look at how he’s approached his hires of other sports vs men’s hoops he just clearly doesn’t care. he kept RT when he could have gone after any number of young, qualified coaches (and don’t tell me we *had* to keep RT and just crush our program, because no we did not), and then after RT is gone he makes a comfort hire that he’s been wanting to hire for years.

just zero ambition, and apparently very little pressure from the BMD’s to perform any sort of real, honest coaching search where we truly went and scoured the nation to find the best candidate. again, oats, hurley, golden, otzleberger, lloyd, may, etc, etc were all recent hires that didn’t blow anyone away when they were made, but they were great hires. same goes with mccasland, mccollum, byington, kelsey, and more. there might be a shortage of marquee names, but there’s obviously no shortage of great coaches out there who would love to coach at Texas. we just didn’t go searching for any of them. it’s fucking terrible.

what hurts the most about where we’ve been as a program since ~2010-2011, is that (for me) we’ve had only two teams since then that “felt like” what a Texas team is supposed to feel like, ie a team you’re fully invested in with players who are fully invested with multiple years in the program. under penders and barnes that’s all i’d ever known. since that time, only shaka’s first team:

and Beard’s second team:

have felt like teams full of “lifetime Longhorns” if you will.

since then, Texas Basketball has been Jaylon Tyson, Devin Askew, Elijah Mitrou-Long, and a long line of other forgettable players and teams that didn’t leave any real impact on me. i just miss that. real deal “Texas Teams”. feels like we’ve been just hiring mercenaries on a yearly basis for most of the past 15 years. shit is soul crushing.

I have been invested to different degrees in all of the teams over that stretch.

Another one that had a lot of potential was Shaka’s last team. We entered the tourney as hot as any team in the country, winning 6 in a row and 9 of the last 11. We had some great wins that year including THREE wins over KU with one being a blowout in Lawrence. We ended the regular season ranked #9 in the country.

Plus that team had tons of multi year UT players. Seniors Matt Coleman, Andrew Jones, Jericho Sims, Jase Febres. Plus some very talented freshmen.

All that to lose to ASU. Holy hell. I actually thought that team had Elite 8 potential or maybe even better. It definitely felt like a “Texas” team to me.

it absolutely did, especially if we’d had a a HCwho knew how to utilize a roster full of outstanding athletes and senior guards.
