April 9, 20214 yr Author IT Spoiler By: Justin, Eric, and Gerry *We hope to have another team update later today.* *There is still nothing resembling separation at quarterback. Maybe that will change during Saturday’s scrimmage but up until now Casey Thompson and Hudson Card are in a dead heat. “Both do things well.” We’ve mentioned how Card pushes the ball down the field better; Thompson has a little better composure and level of comfort with the speed of the defense. While things are even, that isn’t to say either guy is setting the world on fire. *We hate to state this because who knows how it will embolden him, but @Ian Boyd has been spot on about the offense being built around the run game, as well as an infusion of double tight end sets. We asked what‘s the bread and butter run play and heard back, “The one where Bijan gets it. It’s hard to say a specific play. He has the ability to get the offense out of bad plays or make up for missed assignments. He can be a safety net in the passing game too.“ *Regarding tempo: ”There is more purpose behind going fast. Herman and Yurcich seemed to go fast just to go fast. When Sark is going fast there’s a plan behind it. One play is setting up the next and the defense is off-balance at times. (Defense is probably still ahead of the offense but it’s not a wide gap — the scrimmage will be interesting).” *The offense will look to feed the hot hand, whoever that is. It could even be a tight end. If you watch enough football you may notice you don’t have to be an extraordinary talent at TE to be set up for success. The offense is setting up the TE’s to be more effective. *The offense is running a lot more 12 personnel (two tight ends) than previously, though Yurcich did want it to be more of a staple and was overruled. Cade Brewer is in fact still with the first team, but for the first time since he was hurt, we’re hearing he looks more like he did as a freshman. That’s not to suggest he’ll be a game changer, but he has leaned up and apparently regained some of his lost athleticism. This picture does in fact suggest he has leaned up. *Brewer is the constant in the first-team 12 personnel package. Jared Wiley and Malcolm Epps have rotated with each other. Gunnar Helm and Juan Davis, working second team, are a very natural duo for this package. Helm is more TE, while Davis is, “perfect for this offense. He has some real athleticism for FB/H-back.” Helm is also impressing. (feel free to play defense, Ja’Tavion!) *1st team WR: Marcus Washington-Josh Moore-Jordan Whittington. It should be noted, Whittington has played both inside and outside. Kelvontay Dixon has been ahead of Washington but we heard he missed a practice (we don’t think it was serious or Covid related). Washington did have a good couple practices. *After getting the internet excited about a switch to linebacker, Tyler Owens is still at safety. There have indeed been talks about Owens moving to linebacker but that hasn’t happened yet. Montrell Estell is still at wide receiver.

April 10, 20214 yr Author IT practice notes Spoiler In anticipation of the Saturday scrimmage, the staff took it a little “easier” on the team today. The coaches are vocal, stating just because they’re not in pads, it doesn’t mean they’re not going to give max effort, however, they do want the players to give extra focus on technique. The coaches are a little more inclined to slow things down and offer some teaching. *The main event today was a Red Zone game simulation. This portion of practice certainly did not lack for enthusiasm. For this, the coaches institute a scoring system based on positive plays. The defense won, highlighted by a David Gbenda interception and a Jett Bush tackle for loss (I think it was sack). Gbenda made the play thanks to improving eye discipline. We’ve heard Jett Bush, as well as Prince Dorbah, are showing improvement as rushers. *Jacoby Jones and Keondre Coburn also teamed up for a sack. Ray Thornton had one of his own. Thornton and Andrej Karic continue to trade wins and losses in practice. They’re going to be above average Big 12 players. *Kitan Crawford was mentioned today. He has a good approach and demeanor; he’s focused; good feet and moves well. He’s also built well. They’re pretty excited about him. Jamier Johnson was mentioned again positively, ”he doesn’t move like Crawford but has decent makeup speed.” These two were mentioned in addition to Thompson and Jamison. Things have been a bit quiet around Darion Dunn the last couple practices. We’ll check on him tomorrow. *It was a very quiet day for the wide receivers. It’s not entirely all on them. The offense is really drilling the run game and as we said earlier, the QB’s aren’t setting the world on fire. *Bijan had a nice gain on a wheel route. I think they caught him in a mismatch. What’s the O/U on receptions for this season for the offensive engine? *Jake Majors was #1 center. The OL did pretty well in the running game but you could tell some guys were missing. A couple of players along the offensive line got contact traced and were out. *Brenden Schooler was out there with the first team in base. It sounds like a short yardage/red zone defense. He was a box player. *Scrimmage tomorrow. Hopefully we learn some things. The defense is the heavy favorite to win the day, but let’s see if Sark does a little game planning for them.

I. don't. give. a. fuck. If Brewer has what the coaches want, he'll be on the field. If not, not. We don't play a competitive game for five months, ain't no tellin' what'll happen between now and then. So far, so fun.

April 10, 20214 yr Hope these WRs to step it up. Cmon Marcus Washington, if not now then when? Also fucking sucks that we lost Quentin Johnston to TCU. I am sure he would be killing it with Sark's offense.
April 10, 20214 yr TFB mentioned drops being an issue. Marcus Washington is probably a big contributor to that issue if past appearance on the field is an indicator
