March 24, 20214 yr Author 1 minute ago, Hookem2147 said: Spoiler Talked to a few sources about the Longhorns' first day of spring practice on Tuesday. No one should overcook a practice report based on players in shorts and helmets. But here's what they had to say about Tuesday's two-hour practice: One source said the team's medical staff was checking to see if receiver Jake Smith might have suffered a "stress fracture" in his foot (rather than a broken bone) that would have an estimated recovery time of six to eight weeks, followed by rehab - a shorter recovery time than a bone break. But we're still waiting for official confirmation of the exact injury from UT. It was definitely a good day for the defense. In addition to redshirt freshman receiver Troy Omeire (knee) being held out of competitive situations, receiver Joshua Moore also didn't practice on Tuesday, and it was apparently a rough day in terms of drops and some mistakes in route running by "multiple receivers." A source said Moore missed practice due to illness (non-covid). "It was a rough day for the receivers - especially with Troy and Josh Moore out," one source told Horns247. "But the DBs (defensive backs) were breaking on balls, and the linebackers were doing a good job taking away the curl flat." In terms of athleticism, Steve Sarkisian singled out Anthony Cook, Josh Thompson and Alfred Collins on defense as well as Bijan Robinson, Roschon Johnson and Jordan Whittington on offense. There were some two-tight end sets on Tuesday (and will be going forward), according to a source. Sarkisian said Tuesday Cade Brewer, Jared Wiley, Malcolm Epps as well as early enrollee freshmen Juan Davis and Gunnar Helm are all getting reps at tight end. Brayden Liebrock (shoulder) is out. Quarterbacks Casey Thompson, who has changed his number from 8 to his childhood 11, and Hudson Card both made a lot of good reads, had some impressive completions and both were also intercepted. Thompson was picked off in seven-on-seven work, while Card was picked off in team (11-on-11) work. "The defense won the day, and that's not a shock at this point," one source told Horns247. "The offense is involved. It's going to take some time to become second nature." Also, when Sarkisian talks about "all gas and no brakes" - the players saw what that meant in terms of the practice field Tuesday. "Sark runs an extremely high-tempo, high-rep practice," one source said. "So, even though the practice was only two hours, it was non-stop. Some guys were sucking air." Sarkisian said Tuesday,"We need to have more players finish strong and get out of survival mode."

March 24, 20214 yr Can't help but be excited about the guy now running the program. Sarkisian just sounds like he knows what he wants to do and how to do it. Succinct, straightforward, no bullshit. And no candy ass schtick. No sledgehammers. No gold teeth. No baseball bats. The latter alone is enough to help me gravitate toward the guy.

March 24, 20214 yr Author IT Spoiler TALKIN’ PRACTICE Practice was shorter than what the program is accustomed to, but it went by faster for some than it did others. Sark himself made note how the team needs to improve practice stamina. That was a common sentiment with our sources as well. The mock practices did their job and enabled the players to hit the ground running. The staff was happy with the effort and competition level. It was nice to see the effort extend beyond the weight room and bubble. The staff preached practice intensity, but at the same time to “keep each other up.” The staff seems cognizant of the injury bug that hit the team at times. Practice structure: Practice started with special teams, followed by offense/defense walk through. Then individual group work. Then team run. After that it was 7 on 7 with the bigs working 5 vs 4 pass rush. After that was a teaching period. Then special teams again. Finally, they finished with a team period: 1’s and 2’s on one end and 3’s and 4’s on other end. Some really early notes: - Anthony Cook was the first team nickel, which isn’t too surprising. Sources confirmed that he looked good - Cook and Adimora split reps pretty evenly. Adimora has slimmed up - Vernon Broughton was ahead of Moro Ojomo at 3-tech - Alfred Collins was more involved than he has been recently but he wasn’t full-go - David Gbenda and D’Shawn Jamison had interceptions - Josh Thompson and Jamison were the first team corners. Thompson has leaned up some - Christian Jones had a solid first day at left tackle. They’re not in pads, but his strength/power was evident - Jones and Ray Thornton had some spirited reps - Al’vonte Woodard was mentioned as having an active day — he caught quite a few passes - Jordan Whittington mossed a couple defenders on one rep. He looks great - That said, DB’s were around the ball throughout the day - Josh Moore missed practice The team will practice again on Thursday. Today is just meetings and a lift.

Until we actually see Christian Jones be not completely terrible in a game, I’m going to disregard all the offseason comments about how good he looks and consider the zero sum reports about him and our edge defenders having “spirited battles” as a bad sign for our pass rush.
