Without coasting on a once-in-generation talent in Jimmy Chitwood, hot-head Norman Dale doesn’t even win a game. He nearly got run out of town. And he cant recruit or develop talent. Strap and Ollie is all you got on the bench. And how do you not ice the game in the Semis? Did they even have a shot clock back then. Ollie should not see the ball. Granny-style? Seriously? (on a side note: how much tail did Ollie get that night? Did you see how cocky he was with the reporters the next day?). His offensive scheme was ancient. Four passes before shooting the ball? Did they keep stats with an abacus? And his personnel decisions were suspect. Fucking Cletus as assistant coach was a health risk. And Shooter the town drunk. Embarrassing. The finals were a fluke. Jimmy carried that team. Fundamentals are nice and all. It helps to have 50’s Larry Bird playing in the finals against dudes without anyone over 6’5.

Pretty cool that not only was the actual game played at Butler/Hinkle but that they filmed on location the final game there.

Too bad more fans didn't get to enjoy the games in person but rotating the NCAA tourney through all those historic gyms this year was pretty neat.

that'd get you in trouble in high school ball

How naive of you. Do you even Duncanville?

But holy shit could he put some mustard on a chest pass. That wrist pop inspired John Stockton

Hopefully some folks can make it over to The Gym during the mid-week time off.

Thanks for the link.

That links on that page also provide some really cool info regarding the sites. Just an outstanding job by Indy in putting this event together. The circumstances for it having to be done this way suck but they've really knocked it out of the park!

Wished I had thought of that while in Indy years ago, that and Hinkle.

Yeah, that's midway between where I lived for a while and my grandparents' house... so it was a destination for sure.

CSB, but the guy playing #41 in the semi-final game (the one that is "killing us" and Dale tells Buddy to stick to him like chewing gum... "Dentyne") lived across the hall from me in college. Played D3 ball, as did most of the extras for the film:

Other than the title, it's a great movie. Never tire of watching it.

Chitwood was nails with that deflated ball in his backyard, didn't miss a shot.

They should remake this movie.  Becky Hamon as the coach.  Small town rubes down want no woman coaching their fine boys.  Enter LeBron James.  "She stays.  I  play."  He proceeds to thrash all of the small town white kids.  Larry Bird is a famous alum of the town.  Offers to build a gym or something.  Popovich makes a cameo as Hamon's dad with an alcohol problem.  Opposing team in the finale is coached by Magic Johnson.  Various college/NBA players cast as the players, like He Got Game.

Movie would be hilarious.

I would take Setshot Buford over chitwood any day.

i'm not even sure how he got the job to begin with.  cletus must've owed him something fierce.

You couldn't be more wrong.  Jimmy Chitwood is way better.  All the way up with a red hot poker.

Coach Dale ran the split rail fence on Barbara Hershey, right?  Then he didn't call her the next morning.

Only explanation for her open hostility.

He told her it was just going to be the tip drill.

Did Jimmy miss a single shot except when he got cheap-shotted in the sectionals?

She tried to employ the ball-line defense but Coach D went with some off ball screens, a hard backdoor cut and was able to penetrate her Zone with ease.

True.  Jimmy could also make it through a tough practice without being a crybaby.

He missed the shot when Coach Dale told him he didn’t give a fuck if he played or not.

it’s one of the best scenes in the movie

But he was fouled.

Jimmy was smart, skipped all of the tough preseason practices, ala Emmitt Smith/Michael Strahan, only to join the team during the season.

Look mister, there's two kinds of dumb. The guy that gets naked and runs out in the snow and barks at the moon, and the guy who does the same thing in my living room. First one don't matter, the second one you're kinda forced to deal with.

he missed one during the montage in the championship game, I think

Forgotten how slick that ball looked in the vid above.

Jimmy catching those passes like wtf is this guy dropping dimes right into my shooting pocket, I can’t let him down by missing a shot

I never fully understood why Barbara Hershey was so against Jimmy playing basketball. Said she wanted him to get a college scholarship and get out of town. Being one of the best ball players in Indiana is an easy ticket. He could still end up back in Hickory reliving the glory days but that would be on him.

the Office missed out on duplicating the camera angles from Hoosiers. Maybe try to repeat the Hackman speech somewhat.
