Jim Hornfischer is a good guy. I haven't read that book but I should.

To my mind, naval combat stories like Last Stand make ripping good yarns.  There aren't enough of them, imho.

I am reading this book right now for the 4th or 5th time. Just as good this time as the 1st. Really great blend of the large scale tactical situation while also introducing the crews of various ships on a personal level with plenty of quotes from survivors.

Read that book 15 yrs ago.  I couldn't put it down.  When I was done I just couldn't wrap my mind around the fact that really happened.

Great post!

Thanks for the heads-up.

Hornfischer's Pacific trilogy on fleet action is very good too.

Just downloaded for my long drive this weekend.  I recall this being touched upon during some of the WWII docs I’ve seen, looking forward to an in-depth storytelling.

I can probably figure it out, but was unaware.  What are the other two?

Taffy 3 were pure badasses. David v Goliath shit. Halsey fucked up.

The Fleet at flood tide is the last of the trilogy.  I always remember that one because it’s an awesome title.

My bad.   Ian Toll wrote the trilogy.  They are excellent in their own right.

thought this thread was going to be about that aggy boating in Buffalo Bayou for a second.

Given a handful of aggys, we could have lost the Pacific War three days before Pearl Harbor.

Tin can sailor aye aye.

Fuck around and find out.

Neptune's Inferno is good.

this guy does a pretty good summary of the Battle of Samar.

If you like WWII pacific theater books, this one flies under the radar.  I only read it because my grandfather is mentioned a few times, but still a great story.
