Texas Recruiting Notes 2022 - Idiotic Slapfights Unrelated To 2022 Recruiting

Maybe he has Card sized hands?

I read a thread about it today. 247 thinks they missed big on the TE from Gruver who signed with OU then transferred (Conyers, I think), and now they're looking at small-school kids with slightly more skepticism. I suppose Thompson will need to put up Jonathon Brooks-level production to approach five-star status.

Thanks. I have been on the boards since 1997 when I was a student at Texas. We've spent decades as fans and board patrons feeling powerless to create any real change. The Internet, social media,

I work closely with a certain previously committed 5 star QB's father (hint: its Quinn Ewers, for those who haven't been following recruiting closely like I have) and chatted with him a bit this after

Justin Wells notes

Spoiler

WR Armani Winfield, Lewisville (2022) (TEXAS):

The UT commit is relieved to have the recruiting process behind him, he tells IT.

Schools still call, including a hard push from Penn State and new OC Mike Yurcich. But the 6-foot-2.5, 185-pound four-star with almost 40 offers isn’t buying what colleges are selling anymore. He’s done.

His main target today is Humble Atascocita OL Kam Dewberry, and he says he’s working on one more recruit he didn’t want to mention. Helping build this class has been a fun experience for him.

According to his coaches, Winfield has really brought a new attitude to the program since his pledge in early January. Winfield himself mentioned he wanted to be a good example for the underclassmen at Lewisville. Another goal of his this offseason is getting stronger.

He’s excited about the trajectory of the Texas class. He believes players are starting to understand that Steve Sarkisian is the guy to get them where they want to go.

“Coach Sark is just real,” said Winfield.

K Blake Ford, Arlington Lamar (2022):

For those counting spots in the class, this could be an important development to follow.

The top rated kicker in the Chris Sailer player rankings for 2022 is talking to the Longhorns.

Texas wants to sign a place kicker for this cycle and Ford appears squarely on special teams coach Jeff Banks’ radar. The Arlington Lamar prospect talks to a handful of programs, and UT is one of them.

Whether or not the staff elects to use a scholarship remains to be seen, but sources close to Ford say many schools have discussed a full ride for the 6-foot-1, 165-pounder.

Ford was 8-for-8 last season, with a long of 48 yards.

Texas needs a kicker after 2021, so it would make sense to nab one in this cycle. The numbers crunch may determine if a specialist gets a scholarship in this class or not.

Any chance we sign Denver, Ish, and Martrell? Which Harris do we covet most?

Denver is by far the most coveted

Could be worth monitoring, adding another serviceable LB could take this D to the next level. We need someone to challenge Mitchell.

Wish we had more optimism with Abor.  Kids going to be a stud and it's going to suck if/when he goes to OU.

Outside of Ross, who do we look to be in decent shape with at DL/OLB??

Fixed it for you.

Some 9.95er reported that we're in a good position/in the top group for Zac Swanson (https://247sports.com/player/zac-swanson-46097105/) despite it being a recent offer. Past that no idea

I think he's got a girlfriend or some other tie to Texas that gives us an in.  We'll see.  Arizona has been good for us

He's supposed to love Ohio State too. In this case, Go Bucks.

Blake Ford seems good. Gotta figure our history with kickers should be a selling point.

I will never understand why teams don’t readily spend scholarships on kickers. You can’t offer the best in the country early? Half of our memories are kicks. And most of the country PWOs those guys?

Games are won and lost based on fieldgoals every year, but teams can’t afford a scholarship on them because we need a 4th string mlb or 16th WR.

Damn that DOR role got him a job quicker than anticipated, didn’t even have to coach a QB once!

Seems bad imo

Just based off what we know so far, I have no doubt that sark can hire good people. Harris was unproven in the role, go hire the best.

Anwar busy trying to get more money for Brandon Harris, just like he was for Carrington.

Guess Harris & Carrington have the same agent who talks to Anwar.

Hell has frozen over, Brian Davis has a good take.

Right?

Y’all chill, maybe we can get a real single-purpose DoR now.

Maybe he's getting pushed out?

There's zero evidence to support that claim and a whole lot of evidence to refute it

It was a question.

Sean McVay's Rams are where coaches with no upward mobility go, I've always said.

How good is Harris really?  We haven't had a commit in what, a week.

Denver is awesome, only hesitation is what he looks like post-injury.

Ish seems like a damn good athlete who's probably worth a take. He's not leaning our direction right now.

Martrell had off-field issues last season.

Ish is huge and playing against lower level 3A talent. Until we see measurables, it's unclear if he's like Conyers or Brenen.

Mike at Night: Notes on Texas safety targets and more

Spoiler

— I'm entering a 247Sports Crystal Ball pick for Larry Turner-Gooden to end up at Arizona State. The Sun Devils have always been considered a strong contender for the versatile athlete because of multiple ties to the coaching staff. USC was another school Turner-Gooden was high on but the Trojans took a big safety class last year. I'm told one of the biggest reasons Turner-Gooden could pick the Sun Devils soon is that two of his stepbrothers that play JUCO ball are likely to get scholarship offers as well. Turner-Gooden spoke highly of Blake Gideon over the weekend and was adamant about playing out the process, but it feels like a commitment could come sooner rather than later.

— I considered entering a 247Sports Crystal Ball pick for Texas in the race for Aledo safety Bryan Allen Jr tonight. The former LSU commit announced his intentions to make another commit on Monday and I've heard a ton of positive buzz around Texas. I don't quite have enough to put a prediction in yet and if I did put one in, I'd have to make the confidence level lower than I'd like. That said, a source I spoke with said that Blake Gideon has done a great job in this race and Texas, "seems to have all the momentum right now." I'm still digging in with some folks to get more and want to be fairly certain when I put a pick in, but I think this one is trending well for Texas.

— 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong joined Nick and I with a Crystal Ball prediction for Bryce Anderson today. I've continued to check in on Anderson and sources nationally feel bullish on the Longhorns to land the Golden Triangle prospect. I still feel pretty good with my prediction and have been impressed with the job Blake Gideon is doing in his short time on the job. In fact, the tag-team efforts of Gideon and Terry Joseph have been impressive. Both guys are among the most active recruiters on a staff full of guys working overtime on the trail right now.

— Texas re-offered Evanston (IL.) Evanston Township linebacker Sebastian Cheeks today. This is notable because Cheeks has always had genuine interest in Texas going back to the last staff. When Coleman Hutzler originally offered him, Cheeks talked openly of wanting to visit Texas. He was excited today when he was re-offered and reached out to tell me the news before posting it. Notre Dame is the Crystal Ball leader right now, but a source I spoke to near Cheeks said the Irish took a hit when Clark Lea left to take the Vanderbilt job. Michigan was another name associated with Cheeks, but Brian Jean-Mary's departure hurt the Wolverines. As of now, it sounds like Cheeks is pretty wide open, and he's always had an interest in seeing Texas. In talking with him today, he talked about how much he enjoyed communications with Jeff Choate and how he feels Texas now has a whole new vibe with Steve Sarkisian in charge. He plans to visit once he's able to, and if that happens, I think Texas is a legitimate contender.
