Thanks. I have been on the boards since 1997 when I was a student at Texas. We've spent decades as fans and board patrons feeling powerless to create any real change. The Internet, social media,

Spoiler

The Texas Longhorns are headed to the SEC. With that out of the way, there is one massive question that will impact recruiting.

When will the move happen?

This question will need to be answered relatively quickly with many top targets in the 2022 class waiting to hear the outcome.

Enjoy this little recruiting beignet with your Sunday morning coffee.

1. QB Arch Manning, Isidore Newman (New Orleans, LA) - 2023:
One of the big questions surrounding Arch’s recruitment is will he really play in a conference other than the SEC? Now, Texas’ pitch is even more impactful. SEC, Steve Sarkisian QB development, Manning family business opportunities in Austin/Texas. Endless.

2. WR Evan Stewart, Liberty (Frisco, TX) - 2022:
Stewart has given quotes, and been active on social media with the move of Texas to the SEC. A move in the 2022-23 season could well wrap up the five-star for Steve Sarkisian.

3. LB Harold Perkins (Cy Park) - 2022:
Perkins is a five-star prospect that doesn’t hesitate when asked which conference he would prefer to play in. With Texas ascending due to scheme pitch and his liking for Austin, a move in 2022-23 would make it tough on the competition.

4. DB Bryce Anderson (Beaumont West Brook) - 2022:
Much more than half of the recruiting pitch by Texas A&M vs. Texas is playing in the SEC vs the Big 12. The Aggies sell it to the prospect and parents throughout the process. Anderson is already a slight lean to Texas, and a quick move would help in a final push by Steve Sarkisian.

5. CB Denver Harris (North Shore) - 2022:
Back in late February, Harris was likely headed to the SEC. Since that time Texas has made up ground. The best way to beat out favorite Alabama is the move in 2022-23. With a late September decision likely, there is time here.

6. DT Bear Alexander (Fort Worth Brewer) - 2022:
This recruitment is all about the SEC. The former Georgia verbal is considered a heavy lean to Texas A&M over Alabama currently.

7. OL Kam Dewberry (Atascocita) - 2022:
While Dewberry certainly is fond of Ohio State, the chances of staying closer to home is higher. Texas A&M is making that same SEC pitch vs. Texas and Oklahoma. As is LSU.

8. DL Jaray Bledsoe (Marlin) - 2022:
Bledsoe likes the idea of playing in the SEC. It’s been sold hard by Texas A&M, Alabama and LSU during the process. The move would benefit Texas, and Oklahoma.

9. DT Aaron Bryant (Southaven, MS) - 2022:
This is a recruitment that is Texas vs. Texas A&M with Ole Miss back in the fight. If Bryant really is beginning to lean to Texas, a move to the SEC in 2022-23 could be the difference.

10. EDGE/DL Justice Finkley (Hewitt-Trussville, AL) - 2022:
Finkley has a final three of Alabama, Texas and Colorado. While academics are an important part of the recruiting equation for Finkley, a quick move to the SEC would certainly help the Longhorns.

Also impactful:

EDGE Derrick Brown (Texas High) and LB Jeremy Patton (Tenaha)
The competition is Baylor.

WR Shazz Preston (Saint James, LA) - 2022:
Texas is battling LSU, Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi State in this recruitment. So yes, the move would matter in the battle.

TE Jaleel Skinner (Greer, SC) - 2022:
This is a recruitment headed to the ACC if Alabama doesn’t beat out Clemson, Florida State and Miami. A Texas move to the SEC in 2022-23 would certainly help Jeff Banks’ pitch.

WR Brenen Thompson (Spearman) - 2022:
While Thompson’s recruitment is like the others with Texas battling only the SEC, it would certainly help the Longhorns pitch vs. Texas A&M down the stretch.

WR Jordan Hudson (Garland, TX) (SMU) - 2022:
Texas continues to pursue the SMU verbal. While Hudson is willing to be different, a Texas pitch of playing in the SEC wouldn’t hurt.

Just indescribably hilarious that the Aggies “SECSECSEC” recruiting pitch has so perfectly set up the Longhorns to come in with a “thanks, we’ll take it from here” strategy.

If the move is confirmed, then for future commits - Anderson in particular - "Play for the PREMIER IN-STATE SEC school!!" in the commitment tweet would send the ags over the edge ... 🤣  🤣  🤣  🤣

If done with B12 after 2021 season,  TEXAS avoids trips to Lubbock, Stillwater, and Manhattan, but it's gonna really suck going to Ft Worth, Waco, and Morgantown.

Fort Worth has never held any terrors for the Horns.  Many, many years, we outnumbered Toad fans.  Some fool - not sure if upset fan or lege lizard - stated that the economies of Waco, Lubbock and Fort Worth would be irreparably harmed by us bolting to the SEC.  Having avoided spending much time in the rural depravities that are Waco and Lubbock, I can't speak to that.  But those two backwaters unquestionably revolve emotionally around BU and TTU.  Fort Worth doesn't give any serious fuck about TCU, not really, and their economy is only tied in the most cursory fashion.

It's like you taking up guitar to get girls, then your friend sees you're having success, grabs your guitar, and immediately plays a perfect solo from Stairway.

I can't wait to see, and hopefully Perkins is one of the ones it happens with, for a recruit to pick Texas and Perroni or Looch to come back with a "He was dead set on going to aggy until Texas joined the SEC"

Interesting. I would have bet a large sum the official message would be "we intend to fulfill our contractual commitment to the Big 12 and join the SEC at such time thereafter" then wait for the chaos to ensue to hopefully avoid paying anything.

Companies gain and lose contracts and affiliations all the time. The "free market" dictates the outcome, just as it has here. Baylor and TCU are private, religious, non-tax paying institutions whose football fortunes were recently derailed by scandal (one worse than the other). They should expect and receive nothing.

If Tech tries to get in on the move to the SEC, should UTEP also? What about Texas St?

People will still go to college at Tech and the other state-funded Texas schools, and they'll study and play football. If Tech somehow plays football well enough to become a dominant force and Lubbock is transformed into destination city, they'll get an invite next time around.

When IT first heard rumbles of those preliminary discussions it was assumed Alabama (IT heard Bama was at the forefront) and UT were leading the charge for four conferences of 16 teams, or maybe five conferences of 12 teams. After showing spine and playing through Covid, the Big 12 looked at least somewhat safe to make it to the new landscape.

So…why would Bama be at the forefront of these discussions to bring in Texas and OU?

Because they have one of the greatest coaches ever in the twilight of his career  and they may not hold this amount of power for a few more decades. Strike while the iron is hottest.

TexAgs Orangebloods Fan Fiction:

A Bama fan got lost at the 2009 National Championship. He ended at Texas tailgate at the Rose Bowl. They were the nicest, most accommodating fans of all time. Even though Texas lost, their fans offered a cab ride and cot to sleep on.

This Bama fan back to Birmingham and told all his friends. Texas fans good deeds reached the ears of Nick Saban and he decided he can and should share his conference with us.

From the SEC's perspective, this is the Ft Sumter moment for the SEC vs the NCAA. The SEC had the money. Now with one fell swoop, it now has the brand power and erased one of the other four conferences. Two of the other conferences are teetering and may be forced into existential crises by this move also. This is also a good time to get UT because Horns football is relatively weak. If the SEC passes now, will UT be interested in five years after Sark wins 3 NCs  ( i know 🤪)?

The SEC now calls all the shots in college football.

The SEC now has three of the top seven brands in the sport (Bama, UT, OU; others Ohio St, Michigan, ND, USC) and three other brands that are really strong recently (UF, LSU, UGa). Twelve of the 28 participants in the CFP will have come from the SEC + OU. Clemson and FSU both have grant of rights issues in the ACC, but they're both likely having discussion regarding their options moving forward. Would there be five SEC teams in a 12 team playoff every year?

The SEC obviously has the biggest broadcast deals going forward and may have boxed the other conferences into competing for time on Fox only. Looking at the slate of games created by SEC + UT/OU, every week there could be TWO BIG GAMES EVERY WEEK. Using Bill Connelly's 3 fixed, 12 rotating schedule, just OU annual schedule has UT/Bama/UGa/A&M alternating with UT/LSU/UF/Auburn. There's enough high quality content that ESPN doesn't need to go after the ACC or PAC in order to put together a killer schedule. Without ESPN credibly competing for broadcasting rights, the PAC and ACC contracts may be relatively poor creating a death spiral for those conferences. Maybe.

I agree. It is ESPN's best financial interests to destroy the P5 conferences. Fox already owns the B1G, so now they ESPN is about to be off the hook of paying Tech, OSU, KU, WVU, TCU, ISU, KSU, and BU top dollar for average content generation.

So he wants to know if he can commit to Texas and play in the SEC in 2022.

Pretty much. It’s also probably best if he waits anyways. He’s already flipped from LSU and been a rumored silent to both A&M and Texas at various times. There’s no reason to think he’d shut it down even if he committed this month.

Anderson waiting to see when we will join the SEC seems like a great sign for us. Why would he wait for that information if he was just going to pick aggy anyway?

lol that our OL coach can’t be bothered to meet Neto after we’ve struck out on every other tackle in the state. We’re gonna end up with some 255 pound Dallas/Houston private school kid at OT again aren’t we?

It's been mentioned on this board that Neto has been notoriously flakey or "playing a game only he knows the rules to." I'll reserve judgement on Flood for this one.

Eh, saw it the other way. Neto choosing to visit when Flood has a conflict is extremely on brand for him.

And every coach has to have a life at some point. Jimbo's in fucking Africa right now.

Money, playoffs, draft ability and stability--there's not a better time to go SEC.  Also, they are vying for getting an extra team into the playoffs.  SEC just cemented their power.

I don't get the Anderson reluctance. Texas has sold him on corner from day one. Meanwhile, Aggy has put out this week ass whatever position is right for you BS and SEC! SEC! SEC! Texas wants Anderson at corner and will be in the SEC.

Maybe Anderson likes the Jimbo's super pushy approach better.

#27193

Lot of confidence in this thread re Anderson which I will gladly consume. But someone feel free to explain why Aggy keeps winning the last visit award. Pool party weekend - Texas followed by aggy; visit in the fall for a game - Texas opening game followed by subsequent game in college station (per obloods). Typically not a favorable data point.

Tex, Jimbo’s been back a while, he and Sark were both at the H.S. Coaches event last weekend in San Antonio. But yeah, if Flood needs to attend a family wedding or his mom’s birthday party, etc., more power to him.

I really hope our coaching staff keeps track of which recruits visited aggy or plan to after visiting us and use the line "I wont waste your time pitching the SEC, if you dont already know about it I'm sure that school to our east has either told you or will tell you everything you need to know, now this is what Texas is all about..."

Patton and Brown at the end of the month, with Bryant potentially end of august. Maybe we can sway Anderson early. Theres a good chance to pick up momentum. I don't think most of the bigger fish out there are going to commit without seeing the product unfortunately.
