May 7, 20214 yr Just checking in now. Took me a second to comprehend what the title of this thread was saying. Seems surreal. Unbelievable and heartbreaking. Thoughts are with Sam, his mom and other relatives and teammates. I wish them the best in dealing with this. There aren’t many men stronger than Sam but this is too much.
May 7, 20214 yr This news sucks. Too many young people dying too soon. RIP Jake. Thoughts and prayers to Sam and family.
May 7, 20214 yr Just the worst news a mother can get. I pray for comfort and peace for Sam, his mom and sister.
May 7, 20214 yr Popular Post I lost my brother to cancer when he was 13. I can tell you that not a week goes by where I don't think back in time of him or about what could have been. Reflection always helps to realign my empathy for the young folks, however entitled and pissant some may seem, they all breathe air that is precious to us all. Robbery of a full life sucks. My thoughts and prayers for you Sam. This hits close to home.
May 7, 20214 yr What a tragedy. Gosh, just can’t imagine what that family is going through... Prayers to the Ehlinger family.
May 7, 20214 yr The level of tragedy is just reinforced by that graphic with the birth year starting with a 2 for fucks sake. Uggggggghhhh.
May 7, 20214 yr Horrible news. Can barely fathom this. RIP, Jake. Much love to the Ehlinger family at this trying time.
May 7, 20214 yr Just really lucky here to have my parents visiting for the weekend. God Bless Sam and his Mom. I really can’t imagine. 🧡❤️
May 7, 20214 yr I hope Sam and his family have the strength to get through this. My gut says they will.

May 7, 20214 yr I can not imagine a family having to go through something like this. much less in the spotlight this particular family is in. I can only guess the amount of additional pressure with all the fans and admirers wanting to mourn as well. Something akin to Kobe and his daughter, I would think. I hope all give this family the space they need to grieve, and support them with respect and tenderness.

My thoughts and prayers for you Sam. This hits close to home. Lost mine when I was 5 and he was only 3, and the same. I remember when he suddenly stopped breathing, and the panic, and the news at the hospital. To grow up with him for 13 or 20 years of your life and have this happen isn't comprehendable to me. Knowing what it did to basically break my parents I still haven't come to terms with. In the case of my brother, we could say he was in a better place and the pain was gone. For this, I have no words.
May 7, 20214 yr Just now found out and stunned doesn't even come close to describing how I feel. That poor family. RIP Jake.
May 7, 20214 yr Popular Post I have been unable to post since hearing this news yesterday, as emotions kept getting in the way of my words. My kids are the same ages as Jake and Sam. One of them has always been the star whose shadow the other had to walk in. I always told them both, be the best version of you, and you will find your greatness. Last night, I hugged them both a little tighter than normal, and I probably said I love you more than I should have. Life is short, memories are precious and family is forever....cherish Every moment. RIP Jake.
May 7, 20214 yr I cannot fathom what the Elinger family is going through; this is just brutal. Like many others have said, Overshown's words sent me to crying; that's a true friend in grief. RIP Jake
May 7, 20214 yr One of those events where it was the first thing I thought of when I woke up. Like, was that real? just a bad deal all around.
May 7, 20214 yr when i lost my father, my brother and I carried ourselves through the pain. He is deployed right now and I've emailed him twice and hoping to get a call. I'd die without my best friend
May 7, 20214 yr Popular Post When Sam got drafted (watched the entire draft) I was so excited for him and his family. At the time, I was so happy for him that instead of being annoyed with the NFL network I laughed seeing that it was Jake’s picture up there and not Sam’s. Now, that moment means more to them as they celebrated with Sam and hugged him fiercely as he got the call. Jake’s picture up there on television and it was a happy and funny moment for Sam and Jake. Just 6 days ago, laughing and smiling. 🧡🧡🧡🤘🏼 “Sam Ehlinger was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the sixth round of the NFL draft Saturday. Jake’s face was accidentally shown on the NFL Network where a photo of Sam was supposed to be, and Sam loved it. “Good, good,” Sam said with a huge grin during his availability with reporters. “Jake deserves all the screen time you can get.”
May 7, 20214 yr To follow up @Nicole44 and bring some happy thoughts to this thread in honor of Jake lets throwback to the time he was drafted!
May 7, 20214 yr Popular Post When a parent has a beloved child taken from them, the grief, the immediate shock, the emotional pain that manifests itself in physical pain is incomprehensible. 5 years ago, my then 23 year daughter was taken. At least for me, it was not all that unexpected. I could prepare a bit. But, when the tragedy is sudden ... and unexpected, you experience something different. Now granted, a person's grief is as unique as our fingerprints. It manifests itself in different ways. For some, that grief destroys them. For others, it defines them in a negative way the rest of their lives. 20 years after the fact, they talk of the event as if it had happened the day before. And yet still for others, eventually it fills them with incredible purpose and resolve. For whatever the cause, Sam and Jake's mom had her heart and soul ripped apart. For any parent, our biggest fear is that our child will be taken before us. But to have to live that fear is a daily burden. I truly hope, and sincerely pray, that one day, Jake's mom will be able to embrace the loving reality that her son Jake gave others so much joy, not just because he played football and was a good kid, but by his passing, Jake is teaching us even more about the grace to love our children more fully and openly, to embrace each day with more passion and resolve and to not let fear be our masters but instead to inspire us to greater deeds. It is with a sad heart that I embrace Jake's mom into a club that no parent should ever have to belong. You are not alone.
May 7, 20214 yr I’m sure many of us took Dr. Daly’s class, can’t remember the name of it maybe it was Interpersonal Communications under the title of Speech-some #. One of the most popular classes in all of UT.One class he discussed life stresses and put up a list of the top 5 or 10. Number one was death of a child IIRC. I never forgot that.

May 7, 20214 yr So tragic and painful. Is there a more "Texas" family than the Ehlingers? Doubtful. The Ehlingers are what make college football so great in my mind. Two little boys that always wanted to be Longhorns and that were so proud to finally wear that uniform. A devoted Longhorn dad. A great story with yet another tragic chapter.
May 7, 20214 yr When I graduated from the 40 jake was 1. Unbelievable. Life isn’t fair sometimes. RIP jake and prayers to the family.
May 7, 20214 yr I hope the team makes wearing #48 earned just like #60. Edited May 7, 20214 yr by ShaggyBevo RIP
May 7, 20214 yr I don’t know how you can ever overcome the loss of a child. Nor do I. It would not be something I could handle. As a single parent with 1 child, that would be my breaking point. Prayers to 48 and his family. Ehlinger practice facility has a nice ring to it.
May 7, 20214 yr Popular Post I lost my father and my brother 3 months apart 11 years ago. cant describe it. my mother couldn't even walk for days after my brother passed. the only thing i can do is just celebrate their lives and that subsides the pain for a bit. jake seemed like a wonderful young man, brother and son.
May 7, 20214 yr Don’t know if it’s the outpouring of support from the other teams, or the family pics, but very emotional this AM.
