I have a co-worker who is legitimately afraid this rocket is going to land on her.  She is...an interesting person.

I was only half listening to the story this morning, but apparently when our rockets fall back to earth there is some level of guidance or something to make sure it lands in a relative general area.  The Chinese apparently just said fuck it and let the chips fall where they may.

I mean, its not rocket science.

OK, it is rocket science, but its not especially difficult rocket science.

Meh. I remember SkyLab.

Good story to troll the "chicken littles" on Nextdoor.

Genius.  "OMG, alert just went out that it is likely to hit somewhere in our neighborhood!!!!"

More subtle like "Our neighborhood is right in the path of the crashing space station . . ."

How come Bruce Willis and his team didn't horizontally drill on the meteor to break it up more effectively?  Is there a fracking ban on meteors or some shit?  Thanks a lot Obama!

It’s not a meteor.

Statistically and historically speaking, the most likely location for uncontrolled rocket re-entry by far is @South Austin's mom.

Yeah, it’s part of a rocket.   We know, it’s all over the news today.

Maybe it’s Pujols’ homerun in 2005 making a re-entry.  🤷🏽‍♂️

Goddamn, I've been trying to think of movies from my childhood to watch with my 9 year old son.  How did I not think of this one?  Thanks for this.

Chinese rocket falls on you and an hour later you're ready for another one.

This rocket was no mistake, it's carrying a full load of COVID21.

Wait, what happened to Covid 20?

Gimme $5 on Istanbul (Not Constantinople).

Is that YT right? The damn thing is climbing about 3 km/min.

That’s nobody’s business but the Turks.

One vote for Golden Richards... but no way he catches it.

It's going to land on Keith Richards head.  He will survive then burn one and take down a whiskey and water.

Chi-Coms play chess, not checkers.

Chinese Checkers is a racist provincial term, okay?

Now, if you'll excuse me---I have a tournament of Oriental Othello to prepare for.  It's reague night.

It's natural for an object in orbit to gain altitude as it reaches its apoapsis, which is the "highest" part of the orbit. Then the altitude decreases as it approaches the periapsis. If the periapsis is low enough to where the object in space encounters some drag by brushing against the atmosphere, that decreases the altitude for the entire orbit over time until the object gets completely snagged by the atmosphere and plummets to earth.

the dude running the tracking vidcast has had to add a disclaimer to the projected landing zone:

"Impact expected in Pacific ocean - NO TSUNAMI"

Why not both?

constantinople's been a long time gone

So for satellites it is apogee and apoapsis applies to spacecraft? TIL.
Not exactly.

Apoapsis and periapsis are the generic terms.

*-gee means around Earth (perigee and apogee).

*-lune would be around the moon (perilune and apolune).

So, around Earth, both apogee and apoapsis are correct, but apogee is more specific for the body being orbited.

So, apoapsis is around your sister?
