The 2024 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships just concluded.

UVA won their 4th consecutive national championship while Texas finished runner-up for the 3rd consecutive year.

Since Texas' last championship in 1991, they have finished runner-up 5 times.

Where did Stanford finish? #DirectorsCup

The 2024 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships just concluded.

Arizona State won the title and Texas finished 7th.

This was Eddie Reese's last season with the Longhorns unless he changes his mind again.

Woof. 7th.

Anthony Nesty.

Is that the rumor or just your preferred target? He would be an amazing hire. But he's a Florida alum, would be a surprise if he left there.

I'd be happy with Nesty, Bowman, or Holloway. Durden too but there's just no way

I’ll say more of what I know after the hire is made. But I have a friend that has a friend etc.. and he’s very reliable regarding information.

He has floated a few names he would think would be good hires, Cal - Durden is who he said would be the greatest, best, who he’d want etc..

He also said ASU - Briggs would be the next on his candidate list who he would like, was Phelps former coach.

I think Desorbo would be worth a look. But he’s kinda more of a women’s coach, but he has the potential to make a run on the men’s side starting next season.

Nesty is what he’s heard. His take is, if he is the one, probably as good as you can hope. Consistently wins the SEC, won a women’s title, knocking on the door on the men’s side.

He’s also said nobody will be Eddie.

It’s Bowman

Home run hire.

He created Phelps, and developed the swim star of this coming Olympics - a French kid named Leon Marchand who could have won the NCAA title in at least half of the events. He brought ASU from nothing a few years ago to a convincing NCAA team title this year. He has revitalized the careers of several American pro swimmers in his current pro group. There's no question he can develop talent.

If he can bring in a good sprint coach and use the Texas draw to improve domestic recruiting, he could build a powerhouse here. Will be interesting to see if he brings over any ASU swimmers and can keep the young talent we currently have.

My only reservation is that I'm not sure how this will work with him 'overseeing' the women's program, because Capitani has built a solid program and doesn't deserve a reduced role. And agreed, hopefully we keep Scoggin.

Uh. We are already a powerhouse.

Bowman looks…..not much younger than Reese. Even if he’s successful, I wonder how close he is to retiring

He’s 58. Reese is 82 lol. So Bowman looks older or Reese looks younger

I guess being totally bald doesn’t do Bowman any favors in his profile picture. I thought he was mid- late 60s. At 58 I feel better about him being here for at least 10 years

His job is to literally lounge by the pool all day long.  How stressful could it be? 10 more years he says....

Not sure if you're being serious or sarcastic, but I'll take the bait on this just in case you're serious. Being a D1 college swim coach is an extremely stressful job. There's a significant amount of science that goes into creating a swimming training program, and the catch is there's no such thing as a "one-size fits all" program for college swimmers (especially males). You've got to plan out the entire year in advance in terms of how quickly you ramp up to your most intense training period, then how long you stay at that intense period, and then how quickly you back off the intensity as you head into the big meets. Then you have to take that plan and tweak it slightly for 30ish individuals every single year. It takes a special mind to be able to put all of that together and coach a successful team, and once you reach the level where you're expected to deliver national championships on a regular basis (i.e. Bowman at Texas), the stress levels are very high.

There was some confusion with naming him the Director of Swimming but even in the announcement, it said Capitani would remain fully in charge of her program

Quote

Multiple individuals who have familiarity with the search tell SwimSwam that Texas is considering a ‘Director of Swimming’ position for the right candidate. This person would directly lead the men’s team and oversee the entire swimming & diving program, including the women’s team that has finished 2nd at each of the last three NCAA Championship meets.

This structure allows University of Texas administrators flexibility in two key ways: it allows them to go after a coach who wants to continue to coach both genders, and it also allows them to set a higher payscale for the program without either creating a standard for the head coach of just the men’s team or creating a significant pay disparity with women’s team head coach Carol Capitani for a similar position.

The same individuals didn’t rule out that the structure could be in reverse: Capitani could become the Director and oversee both programs while Texas hires a less-experienced head coach to run the men’s program.

While it is not always overtly stated, many collegiate swim programs are structured this way around the country where the nominal head coach focuses on one gender while staying involved with the other alongside a coach hired specifically to lead the other gender.

Three of ASU's best 4 returning swimmers (I'm assuming Marchand will go pro) have already entered the transfer portal. Unclear if they plan to follow Bowman to Texas but certainly possible. If they transfer here, their arrival plus our current roster and hopefully a sprinter transfer or two could make up a championship team.

First big transfer for Bowman - Hubert Kos

Kos just finished up his sophomore season with Arizona State and scored 48 individual points at the 2024 NCAA Championships. Kos was 2nd in the 200 back, 3rd in the 200 IM, and 4th in the 100 back. Kos also helped the team to an NCAA title in the 400 medley relay as well as a 2nd place finish (behind Cal) in the 800 free relay.

At the 2024 Pac-12 Championships, Kos broke Ryan Murphy‘s 200 backstroke NCAA record as he swam a 1:35.69.

Tomorrow is the final day of the NCAA championships for the women. Here's the current standings. Looks like a 5-peat for Virginia is inevitable, but we have some work to do if we want to 4 peat as runner ups

  1. Virginia 383
  2.  Stanford 292
  3. Texas 288
  4. Indiana 209
  5. Tennessee 195
  6. Florida 177
  7. Louisville 160.5
  8. California 139.5
  9. Michigan 121
  10. NC State 114

Stanford is the surprise of this meet with an uncharacteristically strong performance. Combined with a dud performance from the Texas sophomore class (who had a great NCAAs last year), it has created an unexpected battle for 2nd place. I think we still come out on top today, bolstered by our strong divers.

2 Texas freshmen have already won individual titles, a good omen for the years to come. And our best overall swimmer, grad student Emma Sticklen, has a good shot at repeating her title today in the 200 butterfly.

How are the men doing?

What is NIL like for swimming and diving? I know it exists through Texas One Fund because I saw it as an option when I set up my monthly donation for other sports, but would be super interested in hearing how much NIL factors into the team's roster. The men had an Olympic Gold medalist transfer in to join the coach, so I assume those kind of guys get NIL support?

Texas finished 3rd at the NCAA nationals ending their 3 year streak of runner up finishes.

Final results:

1. Virginia 544

2. Stanford 417

3. Texas 394

Damn, apparently Virginia has won it 5 times in a row? Low key dynasty going on

Texas women as a team performed well much of the year but kinda laid an egg this weekend. That's kind of our coach's reputation - well liked, recruits well and develops her athletes, but can't get the big meet taper quite right. Still I think 3rd place is nothing to scoff at and they brought home 3 individual titles. Emma Sticklen set an NCAA record in her final collegiate swim.

Texas won a couple of individual titles today. Here's the standings after day 2.

1. Texas 190

2. California 159.5

3. Indiana 146

4. Tennessee 114

5. Arizona St 111

6. Florida 101

A pretty good night for Texas. It could have been even better as one of our 200 IM finalists was DQed, costing us 11 points. Cal and Indiana are both looking strong as well, and could overtake us - Indiana may sweep the diving events, and Cal will have a really strong final day. I really can't decide which one I'm more worried about. But if we show up like we did today, Texas is probably the slight favorite to win the title.
