Why is he even visiting here? Free dinner and make sure it doesn't look like USC was tampering?

Picking up $1K or more at each place to get wined & dined?

I can think of thousands of reasons. LA ain’t cheap, so it’s nice to have a  ice wad o’ cash when you land while you’re still getting everything settled.

Texas is in really good position for Mathis

That would be big, and if we got him and Sanders we might have competent edges next year.

If we got Mathis and Sanders I would be calling a doctor in 4 hours.

Mike at Night: Transfer portal heating up for Longhorns27VIP

Mike Roach

— The big news of the week is elite wide receiver Mario Williams on campus in Austin. The Oklahoma transfer arrived today and will be in town through Thursday on an official visit a source close to the situation tells Horns247. The former Plant City (Fla.) prospect chose Oklahoma over offers from many other programs, including Alabama where he was recruited by Jeff Banks. During his freshman season at Oklahoma, Williams recorded 380 yards and 4 touchdowns on 35 catches showing off some big play potential. A source I spoke with said this has been a huge priority for Marion since arriving in Austin following Williams' decision to enter the portal. USC has a lot of confidence here, and that's easy to understand given the links to Williams. The Trojans have Lincoln Riley and Dennis Simmons who recruited him to Oklahoma and the possibility of Caleb Williams landing there would give Williams a lot of comfort. Still, any time you can get a prospect in for an official visit there's a chance. Texas has plenty of opportunities and Williams saw the Texas passing attack up close in October when Xavier Worthy lit it up during the Red River Shootout. Texas is playing from behind because of the natural ties USC has, but we will see what they are made of in this one.

— Drew Sanders and Jahleel Billingsley were part of a group of Alabama players who entered the portal today. Billingsley flashed success in Sark's offense as a freshman at Alabama but was in and out of the lineup this year. We've been trying to reach Billingsley and sources near him, but I've been fascinated with the way these coaches have handled former Alabama players in the portal. With Sark, Banks and Flood on staff, they seem to have a pretty good idea of if they would want those players at Texas. I'm not sure where things stand with Billingsley at the moment, but he obviously had some opportunities for growth over the last year. Sanders is a former five-star prospect from Denton Ryan. This is a name we've been watching for a while to see if he would enter the portal. It sounds like Arkansas is heavily involved here, but Texas has been looking for edge bodies and Sanders fits that mold. Sanders probably spoke the least of any recruit I've ever covered so I don't expect that to change. We are checking with some sources near him to see what we can find.A source I spoke with today told me that Kwiatkowski and Sanders have a really good relationship going back to his recruitment.

— Another edge body to watch is Ochaun Mathis. The former Manor star is expected to hit the portal according to Jeremy Clark of 247Sports. Mathis' breakout year came in 2020 when he accounted for 9 sacks and 46 tackles for the Horned Frogs. One thing to watch for is if Gary Patterson accepts a job on Steve Sarkisian's staff. We are told that Mathis loves Patterson and a move to Texas could come together quickly if Texas pushes for it.

And for the lulz ... here's a revelation:

If this staff pulls Mathis and Sanders out of their butts I will forgive them for the other 75 times they were overconfident and a guy went elsewhere.

Sorry if this has already been answered, but does Sark have some Saban-esque tricks up his sleeve to play with the scholarship numbers if we somehow landed all three of Mathis, Sanders, and Billingsley? I thought I read that we were sitting at 31 out of 33 available spots filled thus far.

Some potential creative accounting tricks I found that Saban may or may not be using:

Being a preferred walk-on for a year on campus and then getting put on scholarship keeps you from counting against the 25 (or now 32). The player gets made-whole via NIL, gets made-whole under the table, or is well off enough to where his family doesn't need to be reimbursed (like a Cole Lourd, or maybe this Highland Park WR). I think we'll have some players who join the class who are actually walking on for a year, but it's not broadcasted

15.5.6.4.3 Replacement of an Ineligible Student-Athlete.

He did. He was originally saying 33, and then said 36 around NSD

Yes the numbers 36 and can still get creative with it. If we go to 36 it will limit us in 2023 which can be an issue but this team needs an immediate talent upgrade so I imagine they will stretch to as big of a number as possible
