And we all know Star Wars is a western set in space....

Lucas has said it was inspired by The Hidden Fortress (1958), a Jidaigeki samurai sort of story.  But yeah, it has elements of Westerns too (Han Solo, Boba Fett, the cantina scene, etc.).  The Ewok campfire fart scene is epic (or was that something else)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

I wouldn't exactly call it science fiction, but still a damn good movie.

Kate Winslet totally redeemed herself from that POS movie Titanic.

Not enough Ex Machina in this thread. That movie was masterful

It's more science fiction than half the movies in this thread

It's probably in my top ten favorite movies ever

Ease it back there Fred.  The thread has a who's who of sci fi from the 60's on.  We could get really in the weeds with the 50's Cold War  sci fi

Her was a 10/10 for me

In no particular order:

2001
Blade Runner
Alien
Terminator
The Thing (John Carpenter version)
12 Monkeys
Dredd
Gravity
A Scanner Darkly
The Road Warrior
Donnie Darko

honorable mention: Brazil, Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the one with Donald Sutherland), 12 Monkeys, Live Die Repeat, Escape from New York, Annihilation, The Fly (Jeff Goldblum version)...

12 Monkeys is so good that it took me a few secs to recall that it was science fiction.

Yeah, that is a great movie. Oversight on my part. It's made me go back down the rabbit hole of how great that soundtrack/score was.

Forgot all about Brazil.  That would be in my top 10 for sure.
