Heinz starts petition to make hot dogs and buns come in equal packs

Quote

Food waste is more and more of a known issue, with American consumers wasting nearly 40% of the food they buy, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. Why, then, are hot-dog makers and hot-dog-bun bakers not doing their part?

Hot dogs, Heinz Ketchup Canada says in a new video, often come in packs of 10, while hot-dog buns regularly come in groups of eight. (I might argue their numbers. I don't always see 10/8 groupings, but there's no denying they never seem to match up.)

Why can't Big Bun and Big Dog get together on this? Steve Martin's character in the 1991 film Father of the Bride made this point 30 years ago, with different numbers.

"I want to buy eight hot dogs and eight hot dog buns to go with them," Martin's character said while tearing buns out of a package at the supermarket. "But no one sells eight hot dog buns. They only sell 12 hot dog buns. So I end up paying for four buns I don't need. So I am removing the superfluous buns."

Now, Heinz Ketchup Canada is getting involved in this decades-long struggle.

In addition to the video, the company posted an online petition urging "Big Bun" and "Big Wiener" (!) to get together and put 10 hot dogs in a package and 10 buns in a package.

As of Wednesday morning, just over 5,700 people had signed, and their comments show the issue has bugged a lot of hot-dog eaters for a lot of years.

"100% in for this," wrote one petition signer. "It has been so annoying running out of buns over the years. Then to resort to bread slices in a pinch. Just isn't the same."

Said another, "I agree -- still one of the stupidest things on earth! At least give more buns than hot dogs -- grilled buns with a bit of garlic butter are great for garlic bread!"

Heinz, of course, makes neither hot dogs nor buns, but ketchup, a condiment many people use on hot dogs and many  think should never come anywhere near a hot dog. In fact, the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council just came out to say "only children should eat their hot dogs with ketchup."

Maybe a new petition is on the grill?

Heinz does make mustard, which is perfectly appropriate for a hot dog.

They also make pickle relish, which is fantastic on a hot dog right alongside mustard.

Dill.  Not sweet.  Don't tell me you're one of those sweet relish commies.

Nah--I'm down with the dill.

It takes a special kind of loser to put sweet relish on a hot dog.

I also discovered later in life that sauerkraut is fantastic.

It's the best basic yellow mustard that's not Whataburger's, IMO.

I don't put relish on,I don't like the stuff. Now freedom cabbage... That's good stuff.

A NY style with kraut and mustard is glorious.

If you served me a hot dog trio of a full chicago style, a chili cheese dog, and a dog with mustard and kraut, that would be damned near perfect.

But I also dig me a ballpark dog with mustard and relish.  And I dig a sonoran style dog.

Really, all the hot dogs.  Except with ketchup or mayo.  No thanks.

Do you enjoy eating hot dogs? I hope you won't be put off by my frankness when I tell you that I absolutely love them. In fact, I enjoy no food item more than a freshly-boiled hot dog. Now, I've done a lot of movies, and it's true that I've worked with quite a few celebrities who did not share this opinion. I'm sorry to say that these people have always angered me.

There are two types of people in this world: those who eat hot dogs whenever it is possible to do so, and those who opt to do other things with their free time. Who do the latter think they are kidding? What pastime could be more rewarding than the consumption of hot dogs? I haven't yet found one, and I don't expect to in my lifetime. Unlike other foods, hot dogs can be eaten at any time, in any place, and it is not necessary to cook them. Now, I ask you: Why not eat hot dogs? They are delicious.

is this ketchup on hotdogs the new beans in chilli debate?

If by "debate" you mean that ketchup on hotdogs and beans in chili are objectively and categorically dead fucking wrong, then yes, I guess you could call it a debate.

The best hot dog I've ever eaten in my entire life was from a vendor on the Thames River next to the Tate Modern Museum.  A dog, grilled onions, mustard, and one of the best buns I've ever put in my mouth (#nohomo).

Sonoran style dog is the best dog

The Ducks in Ponds Lobby is not happy with this development.

I'd eat that.  (not Mike Hunt) but the hot dog above.  Why not both?  Might as well turn this into the best hot dog I've ever had thread

That's a legit hot dog bun.  But GTFO with those tomatoes.  That's just ketchup in solid form.

Ketchup only goes on fried foods.  Only children put ketchup on hot dogs and hamburgers.  Only dumbasses put ketchup on eggs and steak.  Fight me.

Do not mock a Chicago dog. They're from Southside.

I'd take this one step further and say that ketchup only goes on fried potato foods (e.g., french fries, tater tots, etc.).  Ketchup has no business on fried chicken or seafood items.

I put it on chicken fried steak.  I don’t care.

Also incorporate it into my sauerkraut dogs sometimes.  Sauté a little onion, throw in a tablespoon or two of both ketchup and mustard, cook a bit, then stir in the kraut to warm it.

Agreed.

I made a Texas version of it once and I think that one meal led to my heart blockage.

Texas Style Sonoran Hot Dog:

  • Smoke a hot link wrapped in pepper bacon and put it on a toasted bolillo roll.

Top with:

  • Yellow Mustard
  • Grilled Onions and Jalapenos
  • Chili
  • Queso

You're making me re-think my dinner plans.

Back in my trucking days I used to make the gutbomb. 1/4 lb fuelstop roller dog with mayo, mustard, japs, onions and pickles. Occasionally nacho cheese if I needed an extra catalyst. I was not going to sleep for the next 6-8 hours guaranteed. Now before you raise the no mayo on a hotdog pennant, the whole point was to get unholy things to unleash deep within. Sometimes, you gotta make sacrifices for the greater good.

The end result will be Big Weiner reducing the number in a package to match the buns and still charging the same price.

I think it's the other way around, the bun makers put ten in a package while weiners come in 8 packs. Seems the buns makers should just drop it to 8 but like you said would probably not change the price. Not that it matters since 90% of people probably just throw those two away or feed them to animals.
