Texas Women's Basketball 2021-2022 - "Vic's Got It Going!!"

Featured Replies

if we play like we did Saturday and last night, next 2 games pretty winnable (at TCU and KSU) which runs our big 12 record to 5-2. Then at OU and Baylor back to back, that’s going to define our conference finish. If we get through the next 5 at 4-1, look out.

Didn't find a recruiting thread for Coach Vic, so here it is. This is a very good pick up for Coach Vic, Sammie has been courted by L$U and U$C all season (My daughter is part of Reagan's girls b

  • She won't play.  She's rehabbing an ACL injury.  She wasn't going to play her senior year at CP regardless, but now she gets an extra semester of Texas Athletics medical care and rehab.  Smart play, b

Up to #6 in NET. In a good position even with those two losses at home.

This team seems to play better on the road. We have no home court advantage with the shitty arena/crowds and this team comes ready to play on the road.

Optimistic but I’m in. Harmon looked much better, hopefully out of her funk. Holle getting more confident taking her shots – wish she would shoot more. Lattimore and Moore with some good minutes and showing signs of getting up to D1 ball speed and Gaston putting up some great numbers.

We just need Audrey to be healthy, looking for a report on her soon.

There are only 2 teams in the top 10 of NET with 3 losses - Stanford (#3) and Texas (#6).

Upcoming NET opponents:

#133 TCU (road)
#21 KSU (home)
#24 Oklahoma (road)
#23 Baylor (home and road)

What is more infuriating about the losses to Tech and KU (besides being at home) are that they have struggled since -

Since Tech beat us on Jan 5, they have lost to OSU, lost to WV, beat KSU and lost to TCU (1-3)
Since KU beat us on Jan 12, they have lost to Baylor and lost to KSU (0-2)

If you're going to embarrass us in Austin, at least have the temerity to win your next games so it looks less bad.

Texas is #3 in scoring (77.2) and #1 in defense (55.7).  TCU is basically the bottom of both (#9 offense/defense), KSU is middle of the pack offense (#6) and a top 3 defense (#3), OU is the top scoring team (88.3) and dead last in defense (74.7) and Baylor is middle of the pack (#5 offense/#4 defense)

TCU at 2-3 is terrible
KSU on the road won't be easy - they look a lot like us (#8 offense/#2 defense in conference vs. #6 offense/#1 defense for Texas) but we seem to play better on the road and our bigs look better as of late
OU has the worst defense in the entire league - 77.3 ppg.  A high scoring offense (#1 offense) and a shitty defense against Vic's defense? HA, ask Maryland what being a high-scoring, high-flying offense looks like against Vic's defense.
Baylor's offense has picked it up in Big 12 play (71.3 ppg) and their defense is pretty middle of the road (69.8 ppg)

KSU also likes to play a lot of zone and our zone offense felt a lot better last night - we didn't hit a lot of threes (6-23, but 8 of those misses were Matharu and 5 were JAT), but we passed it around and got good touches in the paint (26 paint points) - we were 56% if you took out our three point shooting.

I know ISU was down key players but Schaefer always gives teams like that issues. I view them much like Maryland last year.

Teams that are offensive minded and play a beautiful style of basketball don’t know how to handle that “I’m gonna make this shit as ugly as possible” type style of play.

Fennelly said he didn't care how many players were out for ISU,  we flat out beat them.  He didn't play the "woe is us" crap - everyone is going to have to deal with this in some form or another.  We are also missing our top rebounder.

Schaefer is 4-0 against ISU.

They’re a very good team but also exactly the type team Schaefer wants to play.

They don’t know how to handle things when you ugly it up and make it a rock fight.

Which is 100% what we are going to do to OU as well.   They look a lot like ISU - 36% three point shooting team, 10.3 per game.  High scoring, but don't defend worth a shit.

Our NET is high because we are 4-1 in Q1 games and the loss was in OT to #7 in NET (Tennessee).

The formula for NET really seems to value good wins > losses.

In a way, I think playing all these tough non-conference games on the road is the best way to rig the system even it leads to a few more losses.

Yep, this is true.  That road win @ Stanford (#3), road win @ Princeton (#37), road win @ A&M (#40) and now road win @ ISU (#8) doing a lot of work for our NET resume.  Same with just playing @ #7 Tenn.   San Diego is also a solid Q2 win (neutral site vs. #74). The loss to KU (#39 at home) and the loss to Tech (#72 at home) are both Q2 losses.

And we have 4 more Quad 1 games coming up in the next 2 weeks - @ KSU (#21), @ OU (#24), @ Baylor and Baylor (#23)

Vic did this team a huge service scheduling 4 extremely tough road games (and another neutral site game that got cancelled, thanks a lot Arizona).

aggy was worked again last night by #32 NET (Ole Miss). They’re now 1-5 in the SEC and their only win is against Auburn who hasn’t won a game in the SEC.

This is why you don’t do a farewell tour. It’s a business.

aggy softball is going to be projected near the bottom of the SEC but a terrible SEC record might still get them into the tournament.

But there’s a real chance aggy misses the postseason in every major women’s sport this year. I.e soccer, basketball, volleyball and softball.

NC State's crazy comeback last night against Louisville propelled them to #1 in NET.  Still think USCe would be the #1 overall seed if the season ended today.

Something really fucked over OU, they dropped 5 spots to #29.  Not that the day-to-day movement of NET means anything - just fuck OU.

Updated Bracketology came out today: NCAA Women's Bracketology - 2022 women's college basketball projections (espn.com)

  • Aggy is an 11 seed in the play-in game with USC (top of the last 4 in)
  • MSU is the second of the first 4 out
  • 1 seeds are NC State, Stanford, SCe and Tennessee (Vols grabbed Louisville's #1 seed spot)
  • 2 seeds are Arizona, Indiana, LSU (blech), Lousville
  • 3 seeds are BYU, Michigan, Iowa State, Georgia
  • 4 seeds are UConn, Georgia Tech, Baylor, OU
  • Texas is a 5 seed (trending up) in Bridgeport (NC State is the #1 there) - UConn (trending down) is the #4 (and potentially second round matchup in Storrs, yuck)
  • Big 12 teams: Iowa State 3 (projected AQ), Baylor 4, OU 4, Texas 5, KSU 6, Kansas 9

Texas has the opportunities coming up to jump OU and Baylor to grab a first/second round host spot as a 4 seed.

These ESPN bracketologists don’t put enough value in NET.

Texas at #6 in NET and 4-1 in Q1 games is definitely getting higher than a 5 seed.

Game 17: #15/14 Texas (13-3, 3-2 Big 12) vs TCU (6-8, 2-3 Big 12)

Schollmaier Arena (6,700) – Fort Worth, Texas

• SERIES: Texas leads, 46-4. Last meeting: Texas 69-60 (March 7, 2021; Fort Worth, Texas).

Notables:

OPENING TIP: The No. 15/14 Texas Women's Basketball team will look to capture its third-straight Big 12 victory Saturday afternoon as they travel to Forth Worth to clash with in-state rival TCU inside the Horned Frogs' Schollmaier Arena. The Longhorns are fresh off a 66-48 statement victory at No. 7/7 Iowa State on Wednesday. TCU defeated Texas Tech 51-50 on their home court on Wednesday.

THE SERIES: Texas and TCU will meet for the 51st time overall on Saturday afternoon. The Longhorns own a commanding 46-4 advantage over the Horned Frogs in the all-time series and have won three-straight and eight of the last ten meetings.

ROAD WARRIORS: Throughout the first half of the 2021-22 season, Texas has found a way to play some of their best basketball on the road. The Longhorns are 5-1 on the road this season with 4-of-5 wins coming against ranked opponents. Texas defeated No.3 Stanford (Nov. 14), No. 17 Texas A&M (Dec. 5) and most recently, No. 7 Iowa State on Wednesday evening. Their only road defeat of the season was a 74-70 overtime loss at No.16 Tennessee (Nov. 21).

THE SCHAEFER FORMULA: Longhorn head coach Vic Schaefer makes no secret in the way his teams have found success over the years. Relentless full court defensive pressure, attention to detail, and limiting turnovers and mistakes have been built in to the identity of his programs. The 2021-22 Longhorns are no different ranking among the best in the country in several defensive categories.  UT currently ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 and No. 29 in the NCAA holding opponents to just 55.7 points per game. They also lead the league and rank No. 8 nationally in turnovers forced at 23.6 per contest.

SCOUTING THE HORNED FROGS:  TCU enters Saturday's matchup winners of two of their last three contests. They defeated Texas Tech 51-50 in their last game on Wednesday. On the season, the Horned Frogs are averaging 64.6 points per game while allowing  71.9 points to opponents.

Warren gets flung to the ground. Foul on Warren. Fucking wtf

Edit: added a flagrant on TCU lol

Edited by Js1

ball hits official, JAT recovers. But TCU ball? Isn’t the official part of the court?

Texas up 38-19 at half

58-34 after 3

Texas goes 2-0 on this road trip with a 68-47 over TCU. Only shot 39% but won the turnover battle 19-8 And +5 on the boards.

4-14 from 3. 10-15 from the line.  JAT 14, Warren 13, Ebo 13. Harmon and JAT both with 5 assists

It's kind of insane but in 2 seasons we've maybe had our full roster for like 3 games.

With Covid and injuries this has to be annoying for Schaefer.

6 of the next 7 games are against NET top 30 teams.

Go 5-2 during this stretch and we are in good shape to get a very high seed.

Yup. Hitting the real meat of the Big 12 schedule. KSU’s defense and OU’s offense worry me most. Baylor is Baylor, these girls don’t know what it means to beat them

KSU negating OU’s offense and exploiting their shitty defense. Up 70-51 after 3 - ESPNU

ISU-Baylor in a close low scoring game in the 2nd - ESPN2

Oh and Ayoka Lee has 49 points 😳

19-24 from the field and 11-13 from the line

And now she has 51 - new Big 12 record. Still 8:47 to go. She’s 20-27 and rest of the team is 8-27

Ksu scored 32 in the 2nd!

Yeah that next game for us is going to be interesting.  Ebo will have her hands full.

Iowa State looks awful again. The Big 12 is wide fucking open. Really regretting that KU loss at home now.

6 minutes ago, Pato del Muerto said:

Lee has 21 of their 28 fgs.

Lee has 55 and OU has 59

Lee sets NCAA record with 61 points as she comes out. My god.

5 minutes ago, Pato del Muerto said:

Looks like ou started with 4 guards and a 6’2 forward, against a team with a 6’6 center.

OU’s gameplan is to outscore everyone. They certainly don’t play any defense.

5 minutes ago, perfectchaos007 said:

Well I think we have a gameplan against KSU on Wednesday. Get 2 bodies on Lee

And try to get her into foul trouble. IIRC that’s what we did last year. Ebo and Gaston are better inside than anything OU has

Edited by Js1

Lee is almost impossible to defend in the half court.

Which is why Schaefer is gonna press for about 40 minutes and make her run.

5 teams have 2 losses in the Big 12:

ISU 5-2

KSU 5-2

OU 5-2

Texas 4-2 (had one game postponed)

Baylor 3-2 (had 2 games postponed)

Next 2 weeks should be telling - 4 games against 3 of those teams tied in the loss column with us. 3-1 in that stretch would go a long way to getting us into Big 12 title contention.

aggy moves to 1-6 in the SEC. I understand an internal hire like Lincoln Riley when your program isn't in decline but I don't get this for aggy.

Maybe Blair is the problem but hiring the 2nd in command of a declining program is very meh.
