Should I have been letting scissors win against rock all these years?  Also, I never understood why paper beats rock.  It can cover rock, but rock can easily break through.

Rock flies right through paper!

So what beats rock?

Nothing beats rock!

Cody Lee Porter and Heidi Kuntze Porter are disgusting pieces of shit, and deserve a good deal of pain.  Reading between the lines, it seems to me that they were torturing his brother and her son.  I also would not be at all surprised to learn that their victim has special needs.  Good Lord, some people suck.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A woman was arrested after a pedestrian was hit and killed near Interstate 35 in north Austin.

Police said Edith Tavera-Camacho, 25, hit Jiaxing Chen, 35, in the 12500 block of the N. I-35 service road and left the scene of the crash with Chen still on the hood of her vehicle. Chen tried to call 911 after being hit.

Tavera-Camacho drove north on the service road before crashing into concrete curbs at the Parmer Lane intersection on Aug. 9. Police responded around 11:58 p.m., APD said.

Someone is offing homeless people?

I had the same thought, though it feels like there’s been a run of homicides lately.  Maybe it’s a power struggle in the organized beggar community.

No more park patrols due to staffing. Canceling the cadet class was a poor choice.

But the city council will vote themselves a 40% raise.

The park patrol went out the door as well? Must be fun on the Town Lake trails.

No, just an ordinary person interested in self preservation from depredations at the slimy hands of the criminal scumbags who do not give a shit about anyone else’s life.

I don't own one but it's understandable why a citizen might want to have and carry a handgun given where things are trending in Austin now and in the country, in general.

I think your comment applies more to the unbridled cretins who like to carry big rifles and shit around on their shoulders, out in public, at rallies, protests or wherever, to satisfy their machismo needs. They're simply buffoons. Were yesterday. Will be tomorrow.

Absolutely was, but there's something fishy going on with APD. Seems like the whole department is on a working strike, despite having funding than ever.

The fact there are a million break-ins at Mt. Bonnell is a good example. It takes one cop being up there for 3-4 hours on a weekend evening and that shit -- which makes lots of headlines -- stops. Red light running is a plague on the city and seems like there is no enforcement.

"We can't have a park patrol due to staffing?" So there are spots in the city that are Mad Max because there's not a special patrol for that?

APD aren't doing shit. Unless the crime involves a gun or someone going to die, they don't do a fucking thing.

I know it's barely better than Facebook but there are tons of posts every few days about property crimes and threats which APD doesn't even bother responding to.

Shit's out of hand.

The police have never in their history done anything about any crimes that don't have an immediate witness unless it's a murder, felony assault, rape, or kidnapping.

They're not going to bother with theft, burglary, property crimes, etc.  They may show up to take a report but nothing will ever be done about it.  It doesn't matter if you have security camera footage. Unless you can track down the perpetrator yourself, there's zero chance it will amount to anything.

As little as possible. While being pretty well funded.

Because we don't want to end up with the shit we see on the news from California with people casually robbing a Walgreens?

These are separate quotes from the article.  There is other info in the article where people may see some of Garza's activities as positive, but i am just pulling ones regarding activities creating distrust with police and why police may no longer be aggressively working low level crimes.

The tension and distrust between Garza and Austin police has damaged their working relationship, according to interviews and documents.

Within Garza’s office, which includes 100 attorneys, his approach has triggered strife about whether he is going too far, too fast. Nineteen prosecutors have resigned, documents show, in many cases disagreeing openly with the level and pace of change.

The son of a civil rights lawyer, Garza was 39 when he launched his campaign. He was a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, and had never been a prosecutor or sought any other public office. He had worked as a public defender on the Texas-Mexico border, and, most recently, he led an advocacy group for migrant construction workers.

“The public just voted to put in someone to the district attorney’s office that ran on prosecuting police and not prosecuting drug crimes, or hardly any other crimes,” Austin Police Association President Ken Casaday told the local Fox News affiliate at the time. “They don’t want an active police department. ... What I’m telling my guys is, ‘Answer your calls and that is it.’”

Liberal activists also praised Garza for sending more defendants to pretrial diversion programs than ever before and for ensuring that more people were getting out of jail without having to post bond.

"Meanwhile, Garza and Travis County Attorney Delia Garza (the two are not related) imposed new scrutiny of arrests.

For decades, police in the county had been able to arrest people, jail them and secure criminal charges and an initial cash bail from judges. A person might remain in jail for days before a prosecutor reviewed the case and decided whether to dismiss the charges.

Under the new process, police still could arrest someone, but prosecutors would review the paperwork before it reached a judge. If they rejected the charges, the person would be freed within hours.

José Garza planned to decline most felony drug possession charges if the amount of drugs was less than a gram. He also said prosecutors would decline other charges if police had not provided enough probable cause. Delia Garza’s office, meanwhile, began rejecting misdemeanor charges, including criminal trespassing and evading arrest."

But police were frustrated. Amid the explosion of Austin’s homeless population, they were constantly getting calls about trespassing and vandalism. Now, many of the people arrested as a result of those calls would be back out on the street the same day.

“Many times, having people in jail, at least for a day or two, can help defuse [an unsafe] situation,” Joseph Chacon, who replaced Brian Manley as chief of police in March, said in an interview. Now, in many cases, “we don’t have that any longer.”

How many times in your day to day life have you thought you needed a gun to defend yourself?

Thanks for posting that Tribune article. Sounds like Garza is over his head and APD is throwing a hissy fit as well.

They need to get their butts on the same page for the people of Austin.

Why do you ask?

fwiw… my smoke alarm has never gone off, but I do carry fire insurance.

Correct.

But at least Casaday finally retired.

I ask because I'm genuinely curious. I see lots of people talking about needing to be armed and I've never once felt like I needed a gun in my day to day life. I get that I don't live in the scary burbs of Austin like you do, but my urban neighborhood in Houston has never left me feeling like I needed to be armed with a gat while I'm walking my dog or getting gas.
