The reasoning behind allowing traffic back on the streets is to make it more difficult for large crowds to congregate in the middle of the street after closing time.

I wish I was making that up.

I'm good with them blowing up 6th Street at this point.

Which city council member(s) own stock in or have a cousin who owns a pylon or rubber curb manufacturing company?! At least go bollards so we can get some good HOLY SHIT vids of the drunks hitting them!  Those pylons are going to be like the ones on West Gate that get mowed down by busses and trucks within the first few weeks.

This--the regular violence between nomadic aging adolescent ne'er do wells from San Antonio and Killeen can go someplace else.  They aren't coming to Austin for the music, they are here for mayhem.

They completely removed them from Westlake after roughly a year.  Wish we could do the same with the people who install crap like this.

Great, now APD will be rubbing down the pylons with tabasco every evening...

I mean it might work? East and West 6th don’t have the same problem and they allow traffic.

I think of a city like Chicago, and most of those streets are open to traffic with tons of bar hopping happening.

It’s Austin so I am sure we will fuck it up somehow. But I like the idea of not encouraging more people to hang out in the street.

Hear me out.  Late 80s / early 90s I remember traffic on the Dirty 6th.  Yes, it was a party street but never felt truly out of control.  I feel like 6th street truly got dirty once they made it pedestrian only and it made it easy for people to congregate... specifically randos who come down to hang out in the middle with no intention of spending any money in the clubs/bars.  So, if you make it harder for people to just show up to party in the middle, you theoretically eliminate some of the issues.  As someone else said, east 6th east of 35 and west 6th don't have the same issues and the streets are not closed.  It's not as dumb as you might think.

Future tense? I'd be surprised if attempts haven't already been made.

I don't disagree with your larger point, but I'm pretty confident that riff raff will just move to a corner/side street and there is still plenty of room where people used to be able to park. Edit ... or just block cars trying to drive down it likely with intimidation and people will just stop driving or... drive with other intentions, very, very slowly.

I think you just have to do a better job of idiot control.  That is key.  Will APD do that.  At least the crowd will not be as spread out and maybe less harder to police.

The issue I see is the 2am bar closure mass exodus of drunks from inside bars into narrower corridors to move people. Used to be you had to get to the middle of the street to move anywhere as the sidewalks were full of drunks standing right outside the door of the bar they left, foot traffic, and all the lines for pizza and bratwurst clogging up your ability to move block to block.

The other issue is bar hopping across the street during drinking hours is more difficult by funneling everyone to the intersections and those likely won't clear out between light cycles creating a traffic jam cops have to manage with police officer whistles directing traffic.

These.  It's actually a good idea.  Sure, there are plenty of ways they can fuck it up, but 6th street has turned into a no-go zone for responsible adults.  It's for out-of-town troublemakers and shit these days.  I'm supportive of trying something different, as 6th street in its present incarnation is unsustainable, pointlessly dangerous, and a drain on public resources.

Yeah, I don't know how people in every other city in the world are able to do this.

@NowThis

Yeah it was always open to traffic in the 80s/90s/early 2000s.  Closing it down to vehicle traffic is a relatively new thing.  It started with Halloween, then extended to a few other big party nights, and then ultimately they started doing it every weekend.  And back when, it wasn't a real issue.  It wasn't until the lurker/loiterer/troublemaker crowd with zero intention of entering the bars, started occupying the street itself, that it became a problem.

I think there will be a transition period where that crows still tries to linger, perhaps on side streets, but ultimately without the ability to mass congregate in the most interesting areas of the street, they'll find some other place where they can congregate.  Highland Mall is no longer available but Lakeline is half-empty these days...

Honest question I don't know, but do they close broadways street in Nashville weekend nights? Bourbon is closed in New Orleans or is supposed to be.

i haven't been on 6th in 15 years and really haven't partied down there in 20 so none of this actually affects me in the slightest. Was just thinking out loud the problems I could see with it, I think keeping the riff raff in the bars and not the streets during drinking hours is smart.

Go down to 6th during the day. You'll never return there.

It's just disgusting.

Even Friday lunch at Casino? Cause I'll walk down there occasionally for that.

So, which lane is the proper lane to drive in while rapidly discharging a firearm?  Asking for Nicole.

As long as you're driving into a protester, any lane is fine it turns out

I have no idea what someone might be protesting on dirty 6th, but anyone doing so probably deserves getting run over.

I think I've spotted the flaw in your logic. I'm guessing APD will be too busy figuring out a way to blame Town Lake deaths on drunken misadventures to put real effort into figuring out a good plan for idiot control. However, I think in concept your idea works.

So, which lane is the proper lane to drive in while rapidly discharging a firearm?  Asking for Nicole.

I presume you are holding your gat sideways, per requirements?

I don't have a clue whether or not opening up the road to traffic in the evenings is a good idea, although I agree with others who have said it worked just fine in the past.  Those fucking bicycle lanes, though.   Holy shit, Austin.  I wish I had a better understanding of the money trail involved in this city building out hundreds of miles of useless and unused bike lanes.  The only thing that makes sense there is graft of some sort.  At least on 6th it might provide a place for dumabass tourists to ride those goofy scooters, but they'll likely still just run people off the sidewalk as usual.

Ultimately some variation of 1980s/early 1990s 6th has to be better than trying to manage this cluster all the time... in defense of the police, that's not easy to keep policed properly.

Quick snap of 6th st. last night : r/Austin

By the way, this is hilarious... ("Austin is too libr'l now... we used to not be like this" - no CR!?"

Yeah, where is the demand for bike lanes on Dirty 6th?

BTW, here's how APD "closed off" Halloween in 1988.  It was not a full closure...

The bike lanes where the primary factor that made me pretty confident this whole plan was half baked. Eliminate parking spots while leaving shit tons of "congregating" room. Brilliant!

They aren't bicycle lanes.  That's for pedestrians.  Good rant though.

6th has been closed to vehicular traffic on Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights since 1997, at least.  Not sure where some of y'all are getting that it was open to traffic in the 00's.

But not full mayhem in the middle.  It is a controlled closure in that the police maintained the middle.

I guess you missed the “or is supposed to be” reference to the new years news. I’ll give you a pass though, jimmyjazz, not like you’d know anything about New Orleans or you’d have named yourself jimmypelicans.
