Old Settlers Park absolutely crushes Zilker in every possible way.

While it is being renovated we just go to San Gabriel Park in Georgetown which is also superior to Zilker.

Yes, central Austinites are going to drive to fucking Old Settlers Park because it "crushes".  Yeesh.

Apparently they are killing free admittance to Barton Springs from 9pm-10pm on June 1.  Maybe that doesn't affect many of you, but there are hundreds of people who go every night.  I drop in a couple of times a summer.  😡

It costs $5 to take a piss in Austin now. I recently discovered that ALL of the parking near SoCo is pay to park. i.e. all of the neighborhood side streets

Just piss anywhere. Tell them you're homeless.

This is ridiculous and I like Old Settlers Park

People swim from after 9p at Barton springs? I didn't know that.  It always got too cold after the sun went behind the trees. And that was around 8.

What does Zilker offer that is better than Old Settlers?

5 min drive for me to Zilker. God knows how long to wherever old settlers park is.

Yup.  Easier to sneak a beer or two in the dark as well.

Round Rock is like Dallas Jr.  Only thing y'all have over Austin is tornadoes and some overrated donut place.  Do y'all even have a Chili's?

And a pro baseball team, Whiskey Cake, and a much shittier stretch of 35.

Homeless people wielding machetes.

Well let's be honest, one cannot deny the scenic beauty one encounters when driving along 79 to Old Settlers Park.  Old Settlers Boulevard is a nice alternative, and equally stunning.

Zilker... ewww... gross...

lolz - I'm out there enough w/ the dogs that I actually zoomed into the 1st pic to see if I recognized any of the pups.

Meh, Zilker itself is a perpetual re-sod project with a few good sand volleyball courts and a mini railroad that's sidelined whenever a drunk city official runs over the railroad tracks in their Honda Civic.  The parking is a cluster anymore with pay to park BS not to mention the road diet on Barton Springs is moronic to put it nicely.

Old Settlers on the other hand was pretty nice back in the day, with the same amenities, plus disc golf, public water park, ACTUAL sports fields (instead of an open field with lots of people doing their own things)...  They've put in some legit work up there.

I get the nostalgia for Zilker, but it's turning into a shithole that's always perpetually recovering from it's last big event (ACL, Trail of Lights) and or closed due to said events.  Personally, there are a lot better places to hang out with less issues.

I can't speak to the parking on the south side of Barton Springs, but there's no cluster re: parking w/ the north side/Great Lawn, and no pay for parking, unless you're a rube.

The two parks could hardly be more different.  I've spent an immense amount of time at Old Settlers (well, the RR Multipurpose Complex) watching soccer and those facilities are fantastic.  Other than that, it's a suburban park in . . . a suburb.  Zero character in a zero character neighborhood.  If that's what you want, knock yourself out.

We go to OSP a lot more than Zilker and it has a lot of things going for it, but Zilker >>>> OSP.

What nostalgia.  I was there this weekend... and last weekend.  Zilker and the surrounding area kicks ass on so many levels.  I don't have any issues unless you mean the feeling I get on my first dive into BSP #shrinkage.

Yeah, I go to OSP occasionally too for soccer tournaments.  The soccer fields are nice, especially for the kids when they play on 130 degree turf in August.  But otherwise, its a big park in the middle of a suburb.  I will agree with @jimmyjazz its hard to beat the views of Taco Bell or CVS when coming in on 79.  Reminds me of Old Austin.

This is a peak off-season argument

Old Settlers is like a Major Applewhite. Level-headed, fairly consistent - won't blow you away but you'll usually have a pretty good time. Zilker is more of a Chris Simms. High ceiling - ton of potential - more flash - but problematic at times to the point of it being a disaster on the wrong day.

Both of the above invalidate any opinion you might hold in this debate, because:

  1. You must be a Yankee, and
  2. Your grammar sucks.

Therefore, you can’t be correct about green spaces, parkland, or recreation areas, because I’m feeling a little tired and cranky this morning and reserve the right to criticize you for unrelated shit.

The end.

Meh. Child's play vs. the shootings / murders last June in OSP.

I had the displeasure of seeing the first response and gutwrenching aftermath when a kid was run over and killed in the OSP parking lot.  Shit happens everywhere.

This is one of the most persistent falsehoods I hear mentioned. I've lived easy walking distance to the park for 20 years and this has never been the case.

Most of the time it is "closed" for events you can still use the park during the daytime / when the events aren't actually happening. Yes, there are a handful of days where most of it is off limits but it's nowhere near the amount of time people like to bitch about (like the quote above)... and if they ever attempted to use the park they'd know that.

I've had neighbors over the years who complain about this too and all it tells me is that they never use the park anyway, so even if it was true it's funny that they'd care.

Austin

Wow did not mean to ignite a park war.

Old Settlers does have soccer, softball, baseball and football fields as well as a cricket field.

Also has a water park and a disc golf course and multiple play scapes and, most importantly, ample parking.

They are adding more fields and a permanent structure amphitheater by the water as well as an outdoor movie theatre.

Zilker has a bunch of open space but does have a spring fed pool.

Nothing wrong with Zilker but Old Settlers is better.

Moved back to Austin north central area in 2006. I've never heard of Old Settler's Park. Then I Google Mapped it. That's why. It's in fucking Round Rock. Why would anyone in Austin proper drive to Round Rock for a park?

There's at least 20 Chili's across greater round cock.

They wouldn’t unless their kid is playing a soccer game there. Just like the same people who reply to every Austin related thread with some variety of the “machete wielding homeless” crap, these people never go to the center of the city. They think the center of Austin is a dystopian hellscape, but they never go there to experience some of the city’s best amenities.

But to be fair, in addition to some of the city's best amenities, there's also the machete wielding homeless.

And even more dangerous-- Nicole.

Well damn, Central Park doesn't have a cricket field or ample parking.

OSP > Central Park.   Plus, on a clear day you can squint and see Dell.

Your schtick is tiresome. Someone with Pflugerville in their name has a lot of nerve bashing Austin. Pville is the shittiest of the burbs and its not close.

And Brushy Creek in Cedar Park beats Old Setters any day. Old Settlers is a distant third at best.

How can you say that about the suburb that gave us Baris? Derka is going to fight you.
