Tan My around the corner is much better, it's actually the best pho in Austin.  When I heard a car had run through a pho place in North Austin near the Target at Ohlen Road, I was screaming in my head "NOOOOO, please don't let it be Tan My."

I mean, it still sucks for Pho Van of course, but ya know...

I’m going to have to disagree with you.

Pho Phung Luu is the best pho in Austin.

I doubt it but I'll give it a try.  Every time someone suggests a place I haven't tried, I'm always willing to try it, but inevitably when I go there I'm disappointed and wish I'd just gone to Tan My instead.

I get that. They are non-TCH ones for pain and such. I am proud not to have taken a drink since April 24, 2022. I wish I had the same luck with cigarettes. That’s harder to quit. I miss them more than alcohol. But yeah I get the sober/not sober thing. I’m just a hell of a lot happier and functional.

The real question (didn’t want to start a thread) is where is Kate Middleton? Maybe she is hiding out in Austin?

That whole story is odd af. Hasn’t been seen or heard from since January 16th for a planned abdominal surgery and isn’t going to make an appearance until after Easter. Bizarre. The internet is full of the best memes. story is really catching fire and the palace keeps saying fuck off we told you she ain’t coming back until after Easter. Meanwhile Charles has actual cancer and is making appearances. Odd shit. Maybe she’s the Rainey ripper?

My wife is Vietnamese and has been here in US for 5 years.  She swears that this is better than most places back in Vietnam.

Austin is dumb. Let’s try shit that ain’t working other places like with the police or be a sanctuary city or do this or that. Or fuck up I35 or go crazy vet bike lanes and other transit that isn’t going to work and have a ramped homeless issue and have more people than resources like water!

Yet they still prosecute the shit out of DUIs.

Hey Project Connect fans... your $1B train just arrived:

Thank goodness everyone made it out! Fuck. No alarms. wtf?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — People who lost their homes in a Feb. 1 apartment fire in south Austin are sharing their story about that night, as the city’s fire department is providing more details about why it never received reports of the smoke alarms sounding off during the blaze.

On the morning of the fire, many residents said they did not hear the smoke alarms ringing to alert them about the fire. Many people were woken up by either their neighbors or first responders slamming on their doors.

That’s how Ali Shammar was awoken that early morning. “I just heard someone knocking on the door. I didn’t hear anything I was just sleeping,” Shammar explained.

I think you're responsible for keeping fresh batteries in your apartment smoke detectors.

Proud to still be sober. I do gummies though. For my arthritis. From a store. They rule. Fuck Zima. When I donate I do local charities and then Chef Jose’ Andres’ charity for feeding the world. He was on tv talking about food to Gaza. Said doesn’t matter how it gets there they need food. We need humanitarian aid on the border. It would be great if we could fund this with the taxes from selling weed. That would be cool. Get some doctors and nurses to see people. Maybe even help build a train to get across all of south, Central America and Mexico. Provide food and aid. Move a lot of factories and manufacturing plants there. We are at a breaking point in Austin. We were not meant have this many fucking people. We can’t sustain this. However they are coming here. It’s too many people. And we have fewer and fewer police and horrible traffic. Water issues in the horizon. It’s too much. We are going to be in a real mess in a decade. A huge mess. And people are worried about shit that might happen in 200 years to the climate. We may just run out of water and be fucked.

Those fucking things do an amazingly annoying job of reminding you when they are low on battery. Either the detectors were defective or the people somehow miraculously lived for weeks (I'm guessing weeks, don't know because that shit makes me change the batteries immediately) through the constant beeping.

If it was something “real” I think they would put it out like Charles, at least at a high level.

My thought is it is something like a tummy tuck and skin or fat removal.   Not sure after pregnancies if she returned to prior size and shape, but those surgeries take a lot of recovery and you are laid up for a while to recover.  And they can be done in stages if needed including follow up cosmetic surgery if needed which makes recovery longer.

No shame in getting it for most people who don’t have to pretend to be an icon,  but it is elective and I can see people jumping on her for it otherwise.

Sorry for your loss, but I mean c'mon...the train joke was right there.

csb/ My mom was just here for the first time in about a year.  And she's having memory issues but was actually more cognitive than the last time I saw her but physically worse.  Anyway, like a lotta folks her age...she can remember these random facts or events from decades ago but can't remember what happened an hour ago.  But she was actually doing better this time because her last visit in 2023, she screamed at me that I was born on May 21st.  "I know when you were born, I gave birth to you!"  I was born on May 27, or so the Germans would have us believe.  Anyway, she visited the girls a lot over the years whenever her health and schedule would allow from Chicago.  So he brings up, "Hey, what ever happened to that little train they used to have in the park?"  Now she never went on it with our girls because we only took the oldest on there once or twice, just the wife and I.  Then it was shut down after we had our youngest plus Covid plus just City of Austin fuckups.  So I'm genuinely wishing that maybe later in 2024, Grandma can come down and ride it with the girls.  But then I remembered, we're in Austin.  We'll fuck it up again.

A closed cab with limited visibility on a kiddie train, driven by a hungover 20-something making $9/hour.  I just wonder if that train will run over a kid or a homeless person first.

This reminds me of Austin some days. (Make sure to watch with sound for the full effect.)

Okay.....so in the various state house races, which are the GQP races that we should watch to see if the nutbar Paxton/MAGA challengers take out incumbents?  I know to watch Dade Phelan's race, but which others should I be watching?

Also, I'll be watching the three TX Ct of Criminal Appeals races to see how the incumbents do because Paxton is made at them for following the law.

Probably a better thread for your question?

Anyone voting the Austin DA race will be voting on the dem ballot.

We are due for a train robbery. Can't let San Antonio own the last robbery.

https://www.tpr.org/arts-culture/2020-07-10/50-years-ago-there-was-a-great-little-train-robbery-in-san-antonio

An iconic San Antonio attraction has a darkly quirky event attached to it for all times. It happened in Brackenridge Park, on that little train that 300,000 people, primarily parents and children, ride yearly.

Tim Morrow is President and CEO of the San Antonio Zoo, which operates the train.

"It's a historic miniature train that's been in Brackenridge Park since the 1950s," he said. "It's just a fun experience to be on the train, to hear the train horn going as you go through the park.”

The train wends its way under the tree canopy of Brackenridge, over creeks and the rolling grassy hills of the Brackenridge Golf Course. One Saturday in July of 1970 though, the experience that families relish turned downright weird.

"Fifty years ago, next weekend, two robbers stopped the train and began to rob the passengers of their goods — their checkbooks, their jewelry and their money," he said.

Passengers first laughed, thinking it was an Old West re-enactment gag. But when one of the robbers put a gun to the head of a passenger, they figured out it wasn't a joke.

"It was the first time a train robbery had happened in Texas in 47 years, so it had some historical significance to it," Morrow said.

The robbers were soon apprehended and turned out to be Army soldiers stationed at Ft. Sam Houston.

"It was a federal crime to rob a train, so those two gentlemen did their time," he said.

It's just Lost Creek that is being put to a vote.  It's the result of a very specific piece of legislation passed last year by the 88th Legislature, following years of lobbying by a handful of residents.  Perhaps it won't surprise you to learn that there are a few lobbyists who live in Lost Creek.

Anyway, it's just a majority of votes cast needed for disannexation.  That's why the City's move here is so puzzling.  In a low-turnout election, it's going to be the highly motivated people who carry the day.  And on this issue, that's clearly the pro-disannexation people.

So, honest question here, just curious: what are the pros (for those in Lost Creek) to be disannexed?

This is a pretty abysmal take, in my opinion. When public transit is done well (and to be clear, I'm not saying it's done well in Austin), people will use it instead of driving. For example, I used to drive almost everywhere when I lived in the Houston area. After I moved to the Bay Area, I walk, bike, or use public transportation for 95% of my trips, and only use my car when going to the beach/mountains/camping/etc. with friends.

If you are someone who loves driving, it is in your best interests to have well-designed public transit. It means there will be fewer cars on the road and you'll be stuck in less traffic, which saves you time. And, it means people like me can save money and be healthier by walking, biking, and taking public transit instead of driving. In fact, for trips that are <2 miles, biking is usually faster than driving for me here, making it kinetically favorable.

Right now, we are stuck in the high energy transition state between two energy minima, which is what results in these non-idealities. But if Austin commits to doing this right (and in a cost-effective way) I think it'll be very good for the city in the long run.

so they do their own road maintenance, fire dept, police dept? Seems like at a smaller scale, those things would be more expensive. What am I missing?

Yeah....that bolded text is doing some HEAVY lifting.

"Not charming attractive brunette celebrities is a real problem for Brisket.  But if Brisket commits to eating right and working out so that his body is a sculpted masterpiece, gets plastic surgery to have the facial features of Brad Pitt, and goes to charm school to have George Clooney's charm, I think he'll seduce Sela Ward and Susanna Hoffs on the same day."

A ridiculous "if" can torpedo your entire premise.  You know, a ridiculous "if" like "if the city and cap metro commit to doing mass transit right an in a cost-effective way."

I remember voting against light rail her a jillion years ago.  And my argument and reason was NOT that I thought that light rail was a bad idea, couldn't improve our transportation, or anything like that.  My reason was that I would not vote for light rail....that Cap Metro would run.  That's it.  I didn't vote against the plane, I voted against the pilot.  Those issues have not changed for the better since then.

11 minutes ago, High Plains Drifter said:

The neighborhood is kind of unique in that it was fully built out decades before annexation.  So the roads and utilities were already built out.  Austin Water would continue to do the utilities; road maintenance would be done by the MUD through a contractor (road maintenance on neighborhood streets is really pretty cheap).  Police would be through the sheriff; fire through West Lake Hills (as it functionally currently is).

That being said, there is only a slight break on the taxes.  Properties that are disannexed would still be on the hook for debt service on debt incurred while those properties were part of the City.
