Side question, I wonder what the single best record is in CFB following a 5-7 season.

Looks like Tulane went from 2-10 in 2021 to 11-2 in 2022, but not sure why. TCU went from 5-7 to 13-2 this past year and in the championship game. Though I do think in TCU’s case, that was primarily due to an entire depth chart of 4th/5th year players which A&M will not have.

8-4 plus a bowl game is probably the most likely guess, with both a 5-6 win season or 9-10 win seasons being equally likely.

ATM's 4 away games this year are @Miami, @Tenn, @Ole Miss, and @LSU. ATM is generally dogshit on the road (8-13 under Jimbo, including 4-1 in 2020 against dogshit teams, so 4-12 outside of that cycle) and none of those games are easy. Miami's crowd will suck, but that's just not an easy road trip and they're going to be better this year.

Arkansas in Dallas is a toss-up. I think Bama is severely overrated this year, but they'll likely be favored at Kyle Field against ATM.

For ATM to win 8 games this year, they'd either need to sweep the neutral and home slate, or steal a road game from a decent to excellent team and only lose one neutral or home game. Given their depth, coaching, and culture, I think the likeliest outcome this season is 6-6. Lose all road games, lose to Bama, and then drop one of Auburn, Arky, MSU, or South Carolina.

They were damned close to 3-9 last season and caught the breaks against Arkansas at the goal line and the muffed punts at home against Miami. If the ball bounces the other way for them in a game or two this year, they're staring 5-7 in the face all over again.

Freeze will upset Jimbo at Kyle.  And Beamer seems to have SCarolina trending in the right direction.  I can see 5-7 without squinting at all.

So you got them winning between 5 and 10 games?

...we have one of the largest, nicest stadiums in cfb. We played at LSU a couple years ago. We're playing at Bama this year. This is all so fucking stupid.

All projection. Everything they say.

Their entire identity is tied with that conference. Their identity being that they're not us and that they're better than we are by virtue of being in a tougher conference.

They've spent years talking about the SEC grind and how no achievement of Texas could possibly match any lack of achievement of theirs because the played in the SEC. They have to believe their absurd notions of Texas players and fans being pummeled and likely killed by the tough ol' SEC.

They're hoping and praying and deluding themselves that their absurd claims are real and will be backed up in reality.

As Scholz says, it's all projection. The basic element of their projection is fear.

"One of the main takeaways from the matchup was the resurgence of the Longhorns crowd at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, which was the loudest it has been in recent memory.

It was so loud in fact that even the Alabama players such as Will Anderson, who consistently faces the loudest environments in the country in the SEC from week to week said it was one of the loudest stadiums they have ever played in.

"To be honest, since I've been here these last three years, this is probably the loudest environment I've played in," Anderson said. "Probably the hardest game I've played in since I've been in college football. Their fans were super loud, they had a lot of energy. But the atmosphere was crazy."

But we don't know what big/loud is and will be so intimidated on the road in the SEC.

Not as notable, but UCF was 6-6 in the 2016 regular season after going 0-12 the previous season. The next year they went 13-0, claimed a national championship, and put Scott Frost on the fast track to becoming one of the most spectacular coaching busts of all time. He finished with the worst record for non-interim head coaches at Nebraska in six decades. His ineptitude made me a occasional lurker on their message boards and yt channels because the past dozen or so years of Texas football has led me to take comfort in the misery of others facing similar hardships. It’s possible to have a remarkable turnaround, but I think a forgiving schedule is the primary ingredient of that formula.

As for a&m, I agree with what Bobby has said—they have to get better LB play this year. The defensive line is going to be ferocious, but I have no idea what will happen behind them. I like the Diggs guy as a downhill player. Secondary should be decent. Mathews and Anderson showed well at the end of the season. They have to be hoping that McCall and Grimes will perform to their earlier projections vs what they’ve shown on the field to this point. If that offense is dysfunctional again this year, similar results will follow. I could see Jimbo neutering Petrino (assuming he has any actual autonomy at all to begin the season) if he takes too many risks early, and reverting to the rock fight shit he kept rolling out last year because he knows the defense will keep them in most games. Weigman should be fine, but they better hope like hell that he stays upright. I’d love to see Arkansas and South Carolina beat them because I think they see those as simple wins, and it is a goddamn shame that we won’t get to see the pirate continue his campaign of torture and torment against all things aggie. RIP to that legend.

With that roster, one would assume 8-4 has to be the baseline. With that coaching staff and persistent questions about whether the culture has improved, 6-6 is certainly in play. Like ctj said, they really were a couple of late hiccups from 3-9 last year.

I wish we played at LSU. Covid took that revenge match from us. Did you mean Arkansas? I thought the atmosphere at DKR for both LSU and bama was really good, as good as it has been since tOSU in ‘06. I expect it to only improve going forward. Hell, I’m looking forward to Texas playing in the Big House before the sec shit even kicks off next year..you know, the largest college football stadium, and third largest stadium of any type, in the fucking world. Those guys are so dumb.

They really do place undue importance on all the shit that happens other than on the field. It’s a function of them being completely irrelevant in that particular aspect of the competition (the part that actually matters the most). “Those fan bases will eat them alive..” Texas fans don’t give a shit what other fan bases think of them because they don’t have a deeply-ingrained subordinate mindset and aren’t seeking approval or legitimacy from anyone. What are they going to say that we haven’t heard before? These are the same people bloviating about how Texas has ruined the past two conferences they were in. That Texas is universally despised..so what’s new? What a bunch of fucking losers. Yeah, facilities and fan bases are going break Texas, but these whiny motherfuckers were throwing a bitch fit the minute the move was even announced (literally the impetus for this magnificent thread’s existence)..okay. Half of their fans are already on the verge of giving up. Lose to Texas at home in ‘24, and those gashes will start sobbing and advocating that a&m take their ball and go stomping home…to the big 10, defanged pac, or better yet, the new-look big 12. That is who they are. This is long, sorry about that.

I remembered South Carolina having a strong finish to the season last year, but I was foggy on it, so I looked it up. I vaguely remembered that they beat Tennessee. I did NOT remember their hanging 63 on the Vols. Holy shit.

I think the new SEZ reflects sound back better and holds it in more.

Yup, all those empty seats create some nice hard surfaces to bounce the sound back into the stadium.

A "student body that actually shows up?"  Lulz.  I've been to ag games that are not against Texas or Alabama or LSU-- nobody shows up.

And I also love the comment about "when you beat them in anything" as if any ag would possibly know.

i think this is what it looked like in the 1st Q, which is also funny for the "home of the 12th man*"

*unless it's cold, against a bad team, an early kickoff, there is a long losing streak, they will not be bowl eligible, the team isn't very good or any other number of reasons

They beat Clemson on the road too… And lost to ND by one score in their bowl. But every aggy is seemingly penciling in South Carolina as a sure-fire win lol…

They won last-week-in-July ranking of recruits attending their event!!!

They are amazing!!!!

Dumb 'sip. Jimbo is pulling out all the stops and has orchestrated a celebrity pitmaster for the occasion. Lincoln Riley of course, and his sous-pitmaster Malachi Nelson. That's right, a sitting Heisman-corching corch and a 2023 Polynesian Bowl All-Star.

They keep talking about the DL haul we have while failing to mention Robinson and Hills have all the SEC offers plus some and January has about half the SEC teams and Oregon, USC, others.
