Earley was a waaaayyyyyy worse hire than Jimbo

The collapse of the 2022 class was easily expected, before they even took the field. The 2023 class was showing insane cracks by June, you need consistent recruiting not a flash in the pan class that was deeply unbalanced, Anthony Hill was their only 23 verbal commit of note headed into the 2022 season, and well they had a losing season. To players with NFL ambition abandoning ship was inevitable even if took a year or two.

What Earley is doing is turning a slow burn, into a Titanic like sinking, just 3 hours.

There are so many idiotic things said in those posts, but it never ceases to amaze me how some of them lack basic comprehension skills. Burton was referring to the last cycle, yet they’re tying new NIL deals for Manning to that number.

Sadly for those idiots, $25M isn’t cutting it in the new cycle. Corporate will push $10M and the collective + House is committed for more than $25M, substantially. No one has to love this, but it’s better to be on the high side than the bitchy, whiny side.

To be fair, most schools would do the same if that was their top football accomplishment over the last 85+ years.

Fuck your notion of "fair". Why does them claiming a top 4 finish connote "fair" to you? It's aggie pravda bullshit.

They didn't finish in the top 4 in 2020. There was, you know, this weird thing called a 4 team playoff to crown a champion. ATM wasn't invited, largely because they were blown out by 4 TDs to an actual playoff participant and their opponents' collective record was something like 30-50.

The only time anyone ever cites an AP finish for college football, from 2014 onward, is when they talk about ATM finishing at 4 in 2020. It's fucking bullshit and it should be disputed every time anyone cites it, anywhere.

Oh you mean the year that the entire B1G and P12 canceled their football seasons and half the SEC was barely practicing while Jimbo brazenly broke every practice and recruiting rule imaginable? Yeah, that was a totally legit final 4 finish.

Member how Herm Edwards got fired for hosting recruits during lockdowns, yet there were pictures taken of Jimbo hosting kids at his ranch? I member.

As should the “we couldn’t compete for most of the 20th century because we were a male-only military school.”  That’s the easiest to disprove, simply by looking at the actual military academies’ success during the same period.

Thanks @Longhornfrenzy for posting the birth and afterbirth of an Aggie generated fact based on the musings of SEC Mike!

These posts are their moral victories. Of course, somehow we lost to ND who A&M almost tied. I think that says all you need to know about how A&M measures up to t.u. I don't think the guy at the bottom has a fix on "counterintuitive," but I'm probably wrong. He has a college degree, after all.

Yeah. That's literally my point.

That they have to make up some shitty "top 4" result that's fake as hell because their football team ain't done shit in 85+ years.

What the actual fuck? “None of that talent made it to the NFL?” Toward the end of that decade there were more NFL players from Texas than any other school. Texas also had the best W% among all power conference schools during that decade.

So - the most NFL players, the best W/L record, but the recruiting classes were completely and intentionally overrated. Got it.

When you wade through just a bit of the aggyness, you can often find new material for the books of Surly Motto, Surly Bands, and/or Surlyisms.

Today's item is "head over heals". It fits all three volumes.

There are probably more, but I'm heading on over to the Baseball Forum to check on the Earley birds.

Billy!!

Now that Oklahoma and Texas are in the SEC, I want the SEC to be the best conference in every sport. Things like the playoff berths, those final spots in the field and the benefit of seeding, I want the SEC to be thought of as the best conference. I no longer care how any of them fare in the postseason for that carryover effect.

The SEC is going to be fine in baseball forever. I think it's going to be the SEC and the Big Ten for perpetuity in football. In basketball, as long as they have the caliber of coaching they have now, and NIL is where it's at, and with conference realignment, I don't think they'll typically get as many in the NCAA Tournament as they did this year.

For me, as an Aggie, it was way less about SEC pride. I want the SEC to dominate the bowl games. I want them to dominate the non-conference matchups in the regular season. I want them to be lightyears ahead of the Big 12 in baseball so that when it comes down to whether or not Texas A&M or Texas were going to host a super regional, playing in that league would give them that little bit of extra in terms of perception.

Being in the SEC was a massive recruiting advantage over Texas and Oklahoma. Did Texas A&M capitalize on that advantage? No. Clearly, they did not. It is an awful failure that in that amount of time when Texas was going through the end of Mack Brown, Charlie Strong and Tom Herman, and the first couple of years of Steve Sarkisian, which were not good. Texas went 5-7 with a six-game losing streak, and then I think they went 7-6 in Sarkisian’s first two years. A couple of years of Sarkisian, a whole tenure of Herman, a whole tenure of Strong and the last couple of years of Mack, and the Aggies couldn't capitalize.

A&M was in the SEC in 2012. They couldn't build on it in 2013. Once or twice, they had a chance to be special. Texas is your arch-rival in recruiting. Always has been. Always will be. They were down, and you were almost over the mountain top after that first year in the conference. The beatdown you put on Bob Stoops and Oklahoma. We could talk all day about how close they were and why they didn't get there. With Kyler Murray and all these different things right up until what you thought Conner Weigman could be. You hired Jimbo Fisher and went all in. It felt like he almost got it there. A&M finished No. 4 in the country and followed that up with the No. 1 class of all time. Fisher was almost there. Kevin Sumlin was almost there. They couldn't follow up the great year with another great one. They were both 8-4, but Fisher's felt closer because you had that win over Alabama, and then you beat Auburn.

The point is you couldn't capitalize, and now here we are. You had your foot on the neck of your biggest rival. You had a massive advantage in terms of recruiting. It played out that way, but you couldn't capitalize on it, and that's killer. It was a missed opportunity. You can't do anything about that now. You can just go forward with it.

When you look at Georgia, Texas and Ole Miss and what they lost, it's fair to ask how do they replace that and still go forward? Texas with Arch Manning, everyone in Austin is going to tell me, "He promised to stay four years." I don't know about that. I know he'll make enough money, but if he has the year you think he's going to have, he's going to be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft. Money is not the deal for him or that family, is what I've been told. If they have him for maybe one year, they want Longhorn football to take a step forward. That step forward means winning the SEC and playing for a national title. That's it. Anything else is a big step back. If you go 9-3, it's a big step back. If you go 10-2, don't play in Atlanta and lose the first round of the playoffs, that's a big step back.

A&M's step forward has to be 9-3. Play truly meaningful games in November. We got away from realizing it was year one because of how good they started. They lost in the final two minutes to a team that played for the national title. You played the national title game loser to the last two minutes. Nobody wants an award for that, but that was your only loss in the first eight games.

SEC Mike texted me, and he had Bobby Burton on. He asked him, "How much money did Texas spend on its football roster last season?" Bobby was quoted by SEC Mike as saying, "A lot. Definitely north of $25 million." We've heard the same thing about Ohio State. I'll be safe and say A&M was operating at probably $10 million-ish below those teams. You know we can throw Oregon in there.

I'm sure a lot of teams would have loved to be operating where A&M was last year. Most of college football would love to be there. This year, a lot more will be there because of this athletic department having the house settlement, which will force the athletic departments to pay. If you can do the collective and that thing, a lot of these schools are going to jump up even further. Regardless of that gap, A&M is between that five and 10 range in terms of the amount on the roster.

North of $25 million has to be eye-opening. There is nothing wrong with it. When I am ranking coaches, and I don't have Steve Sarkisian, he's just on the fringe of the top five. Everyone tells me Ryan Day is not a good coach. He's got the best roster money can buy. So does Texas. So does Oregon. Texas A&M is trying to, and they have one of the best. You still have to hit on your evaluations, and you still have to develop.

Sarkisian can go 5-7, and go sign guys like Quinn Ewers, CJ Baxter, Kelvin Banks Jr. and all of these NFL guys because you had the level of unlimited checkbook that no one else had. That's legal. You're not doing anything wrong, but I don't think he does any of this without having the best roster money can buy. If you don't think Elko is actively trying to get the best roster money can buy, it's not an insult. It's a reality. I think Elko and the group right now have done a tremendous job of taking NIL from here to here.

Ohio State and Texas have the best roster money can buy, but they're also homegrown teams for the most part. That's what Elko wants to do here in College Station. There's no better way to get guys in your program at a high level than to figure out who can do what and make sure you keep the guys who are worth keeping. That's what they did this year. That's the most important thing in the portal in Elko's mind, and I think that's the most important thing when you look at the teams who made deep runs in the playoffs this year.

I like Elko's approach. I like where A&M's NIL is going, but that $25 million number is what it is. It's no secret. That's why Burton had no problem saying it. In the SEC, I think you have to have both. You have to be able to go out and pay for and get the best players and pay and keep your really good players because everyone is trying to poach them. You have to be able to develop. That's actually the part I feel best about with Elko. I think he's laser-focused on developing, keeping the guys so they can develop and keeping the guys from leaving, who are proven

Oh, William! Such badass fantasies you have. I guess continuing to run away from football after you left really established you as the dominance humping manly men.

I think the whole failure to capitalize trope is similarly vain to William's wet dream of dominating Texas. The premise is that A&M was just about equal to Texas and could have pulled away had A&M only "capitalized" on the advantage. It's like the way they say underachieve instead of lose. No, you tried your best and lost. Face it.

They didn't wander into the SEC and dither about what they should do. The went in with a 100 year plan and poured money into their program. They recruited better. They paid big for coaches. They capitalized full on. And simply failed.

Go back to the premise. We're a sleeping giant who need only get out of the shadow created by the fags at t.u. to awaken. Nope.

Nobody esteems A&M. Nobody who really knows them likes them. They gave it their best shot and they're still Texas 8and4. The Aggies peaked.

They just don't got it.

And to add further to everyone's point, comparing their COVID season to our 2024 season. Both teams had 1 regular season loss... They didn't play in the SEC championship game or the playoffs where the other 2 losses came from. It's an apples to oranges comparison to begin with.

Texas 8 & 4 isn’t going to work when the conference goes to 9 games and schedules home and homes with the Big 10. That bitchass FCS game isn’t going to get it done anymore. Can’t wait.

Texas 7 & 6 just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Also, Liucci's assertion that A&M ever had Texas in a position that wasn't entirely self inflicted is comical. They got stupid (er) in one cycle and pissed off just about every major program in the SEC. They have been a smoking crater ever since.

I don't hear folks here say we are the most dominant force in football. I hear optimism but also disappointment that Sark did not have the special play needed to get us to the final two years in a row. So why do they think that we think we are football gods and are celebrating? I suspect it is little brother syndrome since they know we are flagship for this state. Just like little brothers often view their older brothers as infallible role models, aggy suppresses that admiration deep down, leaving only envy and resentment to be spewed all over TexAgs.

It could be worse.

I was talking to a friend that went to the game in CS last November. He said he tried to get “Poo-oo-oor Aggies!” Going in the 4th quarter, and it just didn’t take. It is possible that, with a 13 year break in The series, younger Texas fans don’t know that we do that, when the win is almost certain?

We need to do that next year, and remind them why they hate playing us so bad.

i carved out some time to rewatch the aggy game minus emotions and whiskey.  I knew in real time that it was an ass whooping, I just didn't realize what a well whooped ass they walked out of Kyle with.  It takes a special person to get online and search for data points to prove out some type of parity between the programs after getting physically overpowered like that.  That's real good bull right there

I can assure you that the poor aggies chant was alive and well in the UT section at the end of the game.

Pretty fun to have them claiming more revenue than us while also saying nobody can keep up with us financially and self selecting their peers as Alabama, Auburn, and lsu.

They still have absolutely no idea what NIL is, who is allowed to pay it, who is restricted from paying it, and how it can be administered.  Just completely clueless.  I've always assumed it's just stupidity but at this point it almost has to be willful ignorance.

They keep referring to our “easy” schedule, which it was compared to OU’s, but the aggy schedule was only perceived as tougher than ours was the fact that they had to play US. Playing aggy lowered our SOS.

Ok, so since aggy joined the SEC, which SEC teams have made the Playoff in consecutive years?

1 - Alabama

2 - Georgia

That's it.

We did NOT have the benefit of the expanded Playoff. Under the 4-team format, we would have been in in '24 as well.

At your age, you would think you'd like a softer yard to fall in.

I laughed way too hard at this

That’s an awesome pic. Nice framing, great shadow silhouette.

If you look hard enough it looks like burning man (which is pretty cool if you've ever been). Been twice and it never disappoints.

Kaeden had a facial scar
And Hayden was a racist
They were all in love with losin'
They were doing it in Texas
Caden played skin flute
Like a kid out in the rain
Then he lost his leg in The Station
He was dancing with a train
They were all in love with losin'
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pouring like an jizzjar
Cumming down the mountain

Gibby would be proud of this. You should write him a letter
