Hey, i bought a new house and the new living room layout just won't work with 5.1 or 7.1 speakers. Anyone have recommendations for a good soundbar that's way better than TV audio?

High end that actually sound good

Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar

Bang & Olufsen Beosound Stage Wireless Multiroom Soundbar

Naim Mu-so 2nd Generation Wireless Speaker, Black, Single https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RT12MYJ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_FQ30KA52W0H3BF0K1DZA

This guy is based in Austin and does a lot of reviews for both high end and mass market. Has multiple reviews of normal sound bars here from Klipsch, Samsung, Bose etc

I bought the basic Vizio sound bar from Costco and like it a lot. It’s the bar and a subwoofer, no back speakers. Much better than the TV speakers.

Your willingness to incorporate floor standing speakers into the wife’s decor, or the want/walls necessary for inwall speakers and installation.

Sonos Arc.

This. I haven't been able to pull the trigger on it because I'm too cheap but all of my research says this is the way to go. To get the value out of it, you will want to know if your TV, cable box or streaming device can output audio in Dolby Atmos.

note if you don't know what Atmos is, that's cool. But take a time out and learn more about the audio technologies before making a decision especially with an expensive sound bar.

Any recommendation for a living room with high ceilings? My soundbar has a seating to increase the dialogue with the center channel, but it's still hard to hear conversations. It's like it just gets lost in the air.

Check out Klipsch units.  They use horns instead of tweeters and have a bright response which will help with dialogue. They are also more directional which could help in an open space.

Yeah, for $800 it better be good...  Do you have experience with it?  I think that's about the top of my price range for this.

I found it on the MS store for 799:  https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/sonos-arc/92XH8QR839CG/6V09?OCID=AID2200065_seo_omc_goo&source=googleshopping&activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Wow, for $400 I would expect better quality. Good to know.

Yeah, those are all really expensive. I think about $800 for the Sonos is as high as I'm willing to go.

There are about 10 different Vizio ones on the Costco site. Which did you get?

I have the FireTV Box, which does HDR and Atmos. Should be good there, just need the right hardware.

So if you get one of these bars that has the additional speakers, how do you power those?  Do they need an outlet?  It may be tough to find a spot with power for the surround speakers.

Sonos Arc SL is $750 at Costco right now. Difference from the previous version is that it lacks a microphone to give voice commands, but since my FireTV has that already built in, I don't need it and save $50. Win win [emoji16]20210730_105716.jpg

I have the Arc and it sounds great.  Have two Sonos One as surround speakers.  Only drawback is that it won't process DTS audio.  If your TV has eARC and can convert DTS to LPCM sound then you should be okay.  If you stream everything, then nothing to worry about its all in Dolby.

Bump.  Do I need rear speakers if I get Atmos?  The thing about the Sonos Arc I don't like is it basically only has one input.  I have an old-school receiver that I'd like to preserve, it has a digital out port, so I'm looking for something that supports both HDMI/ARC and digital inputs.

I'm not using a receiver any more because my Samsung Frame has all the apps I need built-in to the OS. I plugged it into the eARC port and it works well. If you have other sources besides streaming to it over wifi, you will need a receiver to use it and route the sound and video properly.

I was surprised at how many apps were available out of the box for the TV. Plex, HBO max, Netflix, YouTube, YouTube TV and Amazon prime are all I need. I took the fire TV and put it in another room instead. The simplicity of having just the one TV as your device is very appealing. One remote, one source, only one thing to deal with is very convenient.

Yeah I saw that one, but the 'satellite' speakers aren't wireless.  They plug into the subwoofer.  At first I thought they weren't even rear speakers but on second review, it looks like they might be.

The main reason I need to support my old receiver is really that I need to support a turntable.  My wife's (no pics assholes) dad passed away kinda young and has a whole collection of classical records that she occasionally likes to play.  I'd have a hard time explaining to her that she can't do that anymore.
