February 3, 20196 yr Jeff Tarpley: Tennessee product Christopher Russell highlights A&M's evaluations at LB Evaluations can be a tricky business at some positions and not so problematic when it comes to others. Coaches tend to get caught up in physical attributes even when production isn’t there because they believe that they can develop a player’s good habits and steer them away from the bad ones (and that applies to off the field behavior as well). Linebacker has become one of the more complex positions to evauate in the state of Texas at the college level because high schools run spread offenses and there’s been a trickle down effect favoring offense and smaller defenders who can cover more ground (safeties spinning down to backer, backers spinning down to end). As a result, there’s fewer SEC type defenders at the position in the state which is problematic with regard to evaluating people for what they can do at the next level. For example, there’s just one top 50 linebacker among the top 50 rated prospects in the state of Texas per 247 Sports. It doesn’t help that you’ve got a lot of FBS schools not only in the state trying to find players but programs raiding the state from outside its borders. Fortunately, Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher hasn’t tied himself to the state when it comes to recruiting prospects and has a staff with a national reach and the expertise to properly evaluate them from outside its borders at both linebacker and other positions. The Aggies have four linebacker commits in their 2019 class, three of them are out of state prospects offering superior size and speed compared to those in the state, and two of them are four stars. With multiple spots remaining in the class, A&M still has its sights set on adding another potential signee in Dyersburg, Tennessee product Christopher Russell. Russell is listed at 6 foot 1 and 228 pounds and backer is one position where people shouldn’t get too caught up in size. The primary attributes at linebacker comprise the vision to see the field and the ability to close on the ball so that you beat people to spots, play with velocity, and offset the size of larger opponents. You want people who make plays at the line of scrimmage and not five yards down the field. Russell is a smart player who sees the field very well which enables him to avoid blocks and make plays. On film, you don’t see blockers getting their hands on him very often because he understands how to take the proper angles and is a step ahead of them. Russell plays from inside to outside and understands how to read blocks so that he shoots gaps behind blockers to spill people in the backfield. He scrapes from side to side so that he puts himself in position fill gaps and if necessary extend his arms to take on blockers and ball carriers His recognition of formations and plays gets him near ball carriers and then his ability to close on them fast enables him to make stops and limit yardage after catches and beyond the line of scrimmage. Also, he doesn’t give up on plays which gives him great range. Finally, he’s got great hand/eye coordination which enables him to make plays in the passing game beyond just being someone who is a deterrent by being in an area Russell reminds me a lot of former Tennessee high school product and A&M backer Tyrel Dodson who had many of the same attributes. Dodson was an inch taller and a little bit heavier but Dodson’s numbers at A&M reflected someone who always seemed to be in the right place at the right time, could avoid blocks, and played downhill. Dodson had 18.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, and 11 pass breakups in his two years as a starter. Most guys who can fill quickly usually aren’t great pass defenders but Dodson was always excellent on both accounts and Russell has similar attributes. If he signs with A&M on Wednesday, he could well be another three star product who plays like a four star when he gets to Aggieland and represents a big upgrade over the players you find in the state of Texas regardless of their ranking.

Fisher is then going to violently fuck her in front of the recruiting party in order to prove to everybody once and for all that he’s a real man. ht to HenryJames on the heads up. Incorrect. It's almost as if that guy doesn't remember how bad those SEC LBs looked in coverage and how limited they were blitzing against spread teams. Texas HS football gives a preview of a LBs ability in space. Southeast HS football generally does not.

There are so many things hilarious about that angle. Tarpley desperately tries to make the case that Jimbo & Co. found Russell as a result of their 'superior evaluations', and that he's 'SEC-ready' unlike those useless in-state LBs who are too small to make plays at the LOS. Then he goes on to downplay how small Russell is, and completely ignore that A&M whiffed on Gbenda hard and has a desperate need at the LB position as a result. Also, remember how Andre White Jr. and Ke'Shun Brown were originally three-stars? A&M has no problem boasting about how Jimbo identified a 'late riser' with his 'superior evaluations' whenever a ratings bump goes in their favour. But when our guys get bumped up it's a 'sip conspiracy. Edited February 3, 20196 yr by satyanash

February 4, 20196 yr Here's my concern. This is 2 years IN A ROW that aggy has pulled someone from San Antonio. It sounds like Texas is now shut out of San Antonio for good. My question is whether we can reasonably expect to do any more recruiting in Texas? Maybe just focus on 2* recruits that aren't good enough for the SEC? Or do we just need to shut down recruiting in Texas from now on and just recruit out of state?
