Hard to believe but those of us who know all these names, especially the older names, are 20, 30, 40 years on from our time on the 40. We need an FAQ for the cultural/culinary/entertainment history of austin. Something like aggypedia. Most of my entries have already been mentioned. #1. The best cheeseburger ever produced over an open flame: GM Steakhouse. I wonder how many people on our prior forum did not know why the food/travel forum was so named. Was on the drag between 20th and 21st. I think it was in the building that current google street view shows to be something called "K-Bop". But not sure. On Sunday nights, Jester cafeteria was closed, so a couple hundred guys would descend on GM like clockwork. #2. Castle Hill, so named because of it's original location (i'm fairly certain) at 11th & Lamar that's been "built on top of and borg-d" by whole earth. I'm not sure when the move to 5th & Baylor happened ('93?) but it was a great place to introduce visitors to SouthTexWest food. Many great meals with dates, friends, and family. Shuttered on current Google street view. As the steel/glass plague marches west from downtown, that beautiful building is at risk. Sandra Bullock holla???? #3. Katz's never Kloses. Cheese-stuffed blintzes and bagels with cream cheese and jelly. *THE* 3am cure for what ailed you. On west 6th, today it has 3 signs attached to it, Rio, Lux, Pop, whatever the fuck those things are. #4. Jorge's on 6th. I loved their enchiladas. And they served (ritas) to UT kids on dates and never carded. Jorge's never gets mentioned, but there was a time when dirty 6th was not dirty and did have Uniquely Austin venues. One Sunday or Monday night in the fall of '84 i took a date to Jorge's, then went to Steamboat (defunct) and this guy in a black hat was playing solo to a crowd of 20.... #5. Les Amis. Brown rice and cheese for Liberal Arts feaux-paupers chilling to the slacker vibe, before the movie was made. Austin Authentica. Across 24th from the Castillian, now a Smoothie King / Starbucks. #6. Players. 3am cheesburger fix? Flat patties off a greasy grill cleaned once a year. Obliterated by the @@ Conference Center. #7. Tumbleweed. Already covered, more the idea you could wind out 2222 and in 20 minutes from downtown be in dark skies hill country. NOT ANYMORE!! ++++ Austin Authentica still around the from 70s/80s... Texas Chili Parlor, 14th & the cow. No longer has the Illuminati Ham and Swiss on Rye on the menu. Triple-X is even too hot for me. Double-X with a truckload of grated cheddar and crackers with a Bock. The bomb. Dry Creek Cafe on Mt. Bonnell Road. It can't last forever, and it was there before *ANYTHING* was built west of MoPac. The ultimate insider's roadhouse for a beer. The first Chuy's at 1728 Barton Springs. I haven't been there in 20 years but i know it's still open and i hope they haven't changed a thing. 3-hour wait on friday and saturday in the late 80s. Trudy's, but everyone says it's gone down badly. Back in the day, ritas, milanesa, and cheese-stuffed mashed potatoes were the thing. Crown & Anchor. Everyone says it's now the best cheeseburger in Austin. Need to get by soon. Thundercloud. Still a fantastic subwich. Riverside location east of Congress has a new facade but last time i was in there the inside was still vintage '85. Cain & Abel's, Rio Grande at 24th. I would venture more than 1 Million casual copulations have instantiated here over the past 35 years. Again, with the west campus real estate situation, it can't last forever. Scholz Garten. Way before the 70s/80s. But still an institution that deserves a visit if you want to know Austin. Mrs. Johnson's donuts. Now owned and run by south asians. Quality is down. Gourdoughs kicks their ass. But the Elvis nostalgia and original post-war digs make it a visit for the cultural checkbox, and the donuts are still pretty good. Amy's. I still like Amy's. Texadelphia (80s) and Hole-in-the-wall (late 60s?) are still alive on the north end of the drag.... for how long? +++++ bitchassed bitching.... It's West 26th, not Dean Keeton. Town Lake, not Lady Bird Lake. texadelphia is not still alive on the north end of the drag. I would add to your list quality seafood, threadgills, green pastures, nighthawk, fonda san Miguel, dirty's, Jeffrey's, hut's, cisco's, joe's, hill's, iron works, miltos, posse, dart bowl, draught house. still a lot of places still around from the 80's.

July 16, 20187 yr Not downtown Austin, but I'll add Reale's and Saccone's. (Saccone's wasn't open in the 80's but it's still old school Austin.)
July 16, 20187 yr The HH at Pearl's Oyster Bar sustained me every weekday evening of 1992-1993. Dime shrimp, quarter oysters, dollar pints, and all of the free government cheese and crackers you could cram in your gullet. I was always able to splurge for an order of their BBQ shrimp no matter what. Thats the place I miss the most. CHIEF
July 16, 20187 yr La Reyna on South 1st. Solid greasy Tex Mex with homemade tortillas and for breakfast they had a salsa served warm.

Which reminds me of BB's Mexican Restaurant, originally on South First, and ultimately in the location that currently houses Ranch 616 (one of his daughters was dating Russell Korman -- it seemed that he facilitated the relocation). Enchiladas con Huevos FTW!
July 17, 20187 yr Night Hawk on South Congress. Many a Top Chop, slaw, and fries consumed here.Frisco is still around on Burnet.

July 17, 20187 yr alligator grill on south lamar used to have dime shrimp and quarter oysters during happy hour up til at least 2003. i think they also did quarter buffalo wings if memory serves.
July 18, 20187 yr Texicalli Grill Virginia's Cafe Whatever that taco trailer behind Shipley's on Brodie was called. Marrakesh on S Congress before the OG owner died and his kids ran it into the ground The Texas Cuban trailer

July 18, 20187 yr My bandmates had a trailer they parked across from Emo's called "Kid Creole Cajun Cuisine". It was surprisingly good. One of them still makes Aztexan Habanero sauce, which wins the Chronicle competition almost annually.

July 19, 20187 yr that sad news. we've got what, 10 days left?Yeah...and I’m out of town starting tomorrow. They’re gonna be slammed.I’d like a Frisco burger, for old time’s sake. But....I will say that we quit going a couple of years ago after a couple of occasions where we had awful service - waiting an hour for our food, that sort of thing.
July 19, 20187 yr there's too much i want to eat one last time. the frisco burger, the night hawk, their cfs, their meatloaf...
July 19, 20187 yr Castle Hill --- the original. Dan McCluskey's on 6th ----- got me laid several times.

That's been the running joke for that area for a little while but based strictly off of development in the area the last 2-3 years we all know it's most likely going to be a mixed-use condo. Probably with Bumfucalina Tre on the first floor.

July 19, 20187 yr Reading the news I had to go to The Night Hawk one last time. This location is not really the one that I remember. "My" location was the one on Guadalupe. My grandmother took me there. My mother took me there. I took my kids there. This one hurts. The wait today was only about 10 minutes. It was worth it simply for the sake of tradition. It was a little strange in there. The Akins were walking around greeting folks. It was a cross between a party and a funeral.
July 20, 20187 yr Kolache Shoppe on Burnet may be done. It’s been closed for over two weeks with no note on the door about vacation. It’s the only place you can get a Kolache worth a shit in Austin.

July 20, 20187 yr I said Kolache not klobasnek. Batch is a good klobasnek but the bread isn’t right. Kolache Shoppe is the only place that got the bread right for both Kolache and klobasnek.

July 20, 20187 yr I really only eat kolaches with meat. Much better than those nasty fruit ones.So you don’t eat kolaches.
July 21, 20187 yr This thread has me in the mood for kolaches tomorrow morning. Only question is which type of meat to get in it. Maybe the sausage, Swiss, and kraut variety.
July 21, 20187 yr From Wikipedia (first sentence): Quote A kolach (also spelled kolache, kolace or kolacky /kəˈlɑːtʃi, -tʃki/, from the Czech and Slovak plural koláče, sg. koláč) is a type of pastry that holds a portion of fruit, surrounded by a puffy cushion of supple dough. Are we still talking about food? Because I'm suddenly quite aroused.

July 22, 20187 yr Since this is the kolache page.... Village Bakery in West. They know how to freeze them; wrap in paper towel, nuke 2 minutes. Perfecto. Fruit or Meat. Worth the 2 extra minutes east of 35 in "downtown". They will ship frozen kolaches. Ground Sausage, Cheese, Japs. Blueberry Buchta. Incredible fruit twists that sell out daily. In my opinion, the Snow's of tex-czech.
July 25, 20187 yr Not Austin, But in La Grange. when I was a kid riding up with my folks for games and before 71 looped around La Grange, we would always stop at Mayer's/Meyer's? It was kind of like a Dairy Queen I guess would be the best descriptor. They served red hot dogs. Anyone else remember that place? Am I way off on the name?
