I got negged by three people for posting Casey's highlights from the Alamo Bowl when many of you were convinced Card is much better. That's the QB who won a game for us and could be starting the first

Pace yourself, troll.

One year it was calves. Everyone's calves looked HUGE! And one year forearms were a thing. I think that that was when Wylie first came in. Now everyone's explosive.

An underrated aspect of this is that the “Murphy looks explosive” comment set this off, which is hilarious because it’s referring to him looking swole in a stance, in a still shot. There is straight up zero discernible information on his movement ability or explosiveness from that image. Never change, Surly/$9.95.

Sark going big in the portal may have saved the season before it began. I think it will translate into another win or two throughout the season.

Yep.

And for all the hand wringing over recruiting (rightfully so imo) if Texas is good and we get our shit together in NIL (two big ifs) we will dominate the portal every year (or at least fill in whatever holes we have adequately from standouts from less desireable programs).  We shouldn't ever go into a season with a hole on our roster in fall camp if Sark can get this thing on the rails.

He probably ends up at Bama if Sark stays at OC, it was fortunate Meatchicken screwed the pooch on that one.
*Worthy that is...and Bama ties got us Keilan Robinson as well

Murphy with his alleged strength, size, and his physique kind of reminds me of a young Aaron Donald. It is to be determined if he has the speed and quickness to match that.

One of the big mysteries of the summer has surrounded linebacker DeMarvion Overshown’s role. The senior athlete with elite athleticism for the position had been working at Sam linebacker. The problem there, is, Sam comes off the field when the defense goes to nickel and its hard to envision Overshown leaving the field.

I saw an early mock NFL draft for next year, and it had him going late in the first round... to the cowboys no less.

Projection pick - but I think he's going to have the testing numbers to be a first round pick assuming he builds on what he did on the field last year (where by his own admission he didn't really know what he was doing).

Why do you think he’ll have 1st round testing numbers? I can’t see anything from high school camps or track numbers.

I really dont want to see any more longhorns go to the Boys (in spite of them being my team growing up) until Jerrah strokes out and Stephen decides to cut his losses and sell to someone who gaf about winning another SB.

I don’t think we’re missing anyone specifically at that spot, and it would be pretty surprising if Gbena couldn’t beat him out there given the hype he was getting in the spring.

I may be off base, but it sounds like that is the least important LB spot on the defense for the most part. Whoever wins the spot mostly won’t be on the field on 3rd downs or against obvious passing looks.

I keep expecting them to move Gbenda there. I can’t imagine Brockermeyer (or Ford who apparently can’t beat out Brockermeyer) would start over Gbenda, but time is getting short to make the switch to get Gbenda adequate reps.

I think this is definitely part of it, the Mike will get subbed out the most and might not even be one of the 11 positions that gets the most playing time.

Brockermeyer can play, I think he really made the most of his time in the spring and impressed the staff. The fact that he would be starting over Gbenda in that spot is a bit surprising to me, but I would be happy to see him lock down a spot. We need guys who will consistently be in the right place at that position, and I think he is that guy, regardless of athletic limitations.

So if you took our grouping that is used the most in Big 12 play, are you thinking Gbenda and Overshown are the LBs?

That was my expectation, but they’ll have to move Gbenda to get some Mike reps soon. I believe he repped at Will all Spring since Overshown was hurt. I’ll be very surprised if they start Brock without having him compete with Gbenda at the same spot during Fall camp. I do think it’s possible we’ll see a good bit of Ovie/Davis, Overshown, and Thornton when we go to 3-3 looks. They have a lot of different personnel options in the 3-3.

There’s enough versatility with scheme and positions that it’s not like the Mike will be on the field 90% of the time.

The SAM, currently projected to be the ND transfer, is the line back who comes off the field in the Nickel packages. The mike comes off in Dime packages. I expected Gbenda or Richardson to take that spot but it seems like Richardson isn’t up to speed yet.

Junior Joshua Moore was the leading wide receiver for the Texas Longhorns in 2020, hauling in 30 catches for 472 yards and nine touchdowns in 10 starts. Those aren’t bad numbers, but they fail to paint the picture of his season.

Against TCU, Oklahoma State, West Virginia, and Iowa State, games in which Texas was 2-2, Moore caught no more than one pass. He recorded zero catches against the Horned Frogs and Mountaineers. No. 1 receivers, which Moore in essence was last season, can’t go on three-game stretches where they record two receptions.

Moore knows he and the rest of the receivers need to bring it week after week, day after day, rep after rep in order to provide what Steve Sarkisian is looking for from his wide receivers during his first season as Texas’ head coach.

“He’s really big on consistency,” Moore said Saturday. “The way I see it, if you’re making plays, especially in fall camp every single practice and you have no drops offs and you’re improving every practice, then you’re going to be on the field. Everybody’s just trying to compete.”

After playing at 162 pounds last season, Moore realized one way to help him be more consistent was adding physicality. His quickness and speed are the hallmarks of his game, but those tools can’t be utilized if the defender is able to push him around near the line of scrimmage.

Now he’s at 174 pounds, drawing recent praise from Sarkisian as one of a handful of players who added good weight and made progress with their bodies during the offseason.

But adding size and gaining muscle wasn’t Moore’s top priority during the offseason, though it certainly ranked close to the top.

“The thing I wanted to improve on most from last season was just reading the defense,” Moore said. “In this offense, it’s definitely necessary because whatever defense they run, we have to adjust our route and stuff like that.”

According to Moore, if he and the other receivers can read the defense properly, there should be plenty of playmaking opportunities in Sarkisian’s offense

“What makes it so unique is that every receiver who runs a route, it doesn’t matter what defense they play, somebody will be open no matter what,” Moore said. “It’s all up to the guy to make the play. I mean, that’s the best way to put that. It’s literally, somebody will be open every play. That’s what makes it so exciting.”

Joshua Moore, Texas’ WRs are a key part of the QB battle

Texas’ wide receivers know they have to perform well in practice to give Casey Thompson and Hudson Card, two players competing for the starting quarterback position, their best opportunity to win the job.

That is the most high-profile position battle for the Longhorns this preseason, but the depth chart at wide receiver is by no means set in stone. Xavier Worthy, who Moore mentioned reminds him of himself, is making plays and drawing praise behind the scenes.

Moore, Worthy, and the rest of the receivers credit their playmaking ability to the quality throws they’ve received from Thompson and Card.

“Both of them sling the rock,” Moore said. “They make us look good. It’s not that we make them look good. If you come to practice, you’ll see for yourself. They’re putting it right where it needs to be, and it’s a strong battle right now.”

Is there a preference among the receivers for who wins the job? Moore diffused that notion, and said the receiving corps will be ready to roll with anyone.

“Whoever ends up winning the starting spot, they deserve it,” Moore said. “Or they both deserve it in my opinion. I’m just looking forward to the season now. Whoever the quarterback is, I’m fine with it, and I speak for all the receivers.”

Not exactly. The SAM is usually on the field when we are in Nickel in a 3-3-5 and the Mike usually comes off. The SAM usually comes off for the 2-4-5 in favor of the Mike. So it’s more dependent on front than whether we’re in Nickel.

Also, PK mixes up his LBs a lot. It changed form year to year for him at UW, so it’s not even that static.

He could put Overshown at Sam in a 3-3 and then put Gbenda at Will and keep the Mike, or he may also sub the Mike out and leave Thornton or someone else in. We have a lot of different bodies at LB, so we’re pretty much just going to have to see how he uses guys, because there’s a ton of versatility in his defense. The classic depth chart starting 11 won’t accurately convey playing time from week to week under PK.

This combined with the exact opposite thing happening on offense is what gives me the excitez for the season.

Yeah this is basically what I'm thinking. The SAM (Ovie or Davis) would primarily be coming off the edge or stunting in this look, correct? He'll rarely be asked to carry a TE down the seam or drop back into a zone and cover slot guys.

We're due for a white LB that can actually play

Did you forget Breckyn Hager? I mean he was on the line but he was built like a linebacker [emoji2371]. I miss that homie like you wouldn’t believe

Well damn.  Where is Chris Ash and his defense so that i and every offense we face knows exactly what each LB is going to do and going to be?

I agree that the front will have a big impact on why we do with the linebackers. Still hoping to see more of Gbenda but if Brock if the best player for the position then LFG!

I think this is actually an apt comparison. Baylor got the unheralded Hager brother that was fairly productive throughout his career while we got the hyped one that didn’t pan out so much. Hopefully this time around, we got the unheralded Brockermeyer that plays above his ranking and Bama got the overhyped assholes that won’t pan out.

We’ve had a lot of insurances like this, such as Armani and Donte foreman. The younger unheralded one was the one who was most effective
