24. Texas Longhorns

The Longhorns exorcised a few demons on Saturday, winning their first game at TCU since 2013 as Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson has had Texas' number, including with wins in the past two seasons. But this year, Texas put the ball in Bijan Robinson's hands, and he set career highs with 35 carries for 216 yards and two touchdowns, and added two catches for 22 yards. Texas QB Casey Thompson didn't light it up but was 12-of-22 for 142 yards and added a 41-yard run to win his third straight start. The Longhorns continue to make drives count, going 24-of-26 with 20 touchdowns in the red zone for the season. -- Wilson

This is about the time each season where the preseason rankings are having waaaaaay too much influence.  Most teams have played 5 games (over 40 percent of their games), and we have a reasonable amount of data.

So... Aggies at #26?  Are you serious?  The team whose biggest wins are vs 2-3 New Mexico and a squeaker vs a garbage 1-4 Colorado?

They haven't earned a single one of those votes (their own fans would agree).  There are 19 teams in the "others receiving votes" - including the Leach team that just beat them in their building - and I'll bet almost all of them can point to better wins than Colorado and New Mexico.

Texas at 23 is probably about right.  Not a ton of teams above us who we can bitch about.

The table is set for us to claim a top-10 ranking.  Taking out their Texas losses, we've already beaten:

Louisiana (4-0)

Texas Tech (4-0)

TCU (3-1)

... which is a decent body of work.  I'm ignoring Rice.  No one gets credit for beating a team full of chemical engineers and computer science majors.

... and our next two opponents are:

OU (5-0)

Oklahoma State (5-0)

It's very unlikely we'll find ourselves at 6-1, but I refilled my flask and booked my hotel room in Dallas just in case.  See you at the Cotton Bowl.

Tennessee Tech has 4 votes?

I'm not even sure how much beating OU moves the needle with the ways they've found to struggle in their wins. Outside of 'Bama an Dawg it's a very muddy picture for the field.
I think to you're giving voters too much credit for actually paying attention.

The fact that Clemson continues to get votes at this point in the season pretty much assures they just mail it in other than what happens with the top few teams.

Beat a top 10 OU and we'll be at least around 10-12.

Not that it matters. Winning these games matters, not the rankings. Rankings won't help us win the big 12, which is the goal.
4 minutes ago, Spider2YBanana said:

Penn state has a few losses in them, they always do.

Absolutely. The best case scenario for us in the big 10 is probably for them to beat Iowa and then lose to both MI and Ohio State. Then have Iowa win the conference over whoever comes out of the other side. With zero quality wins other than that game and no national brand. I mean, if we can’t dare to dream that somehow they all end up with 2 losses.
Again- this is all mental masterbation as I don’t expect us to win out. But it’s be cool if we did.

16 minutes ago, Wulaw Horn said:

Yeah, me neither.  In fact, I'd say the realistic odds of us going 2-0 vs OU and Okie State is about 20-30%.

And even if we did that, we're still looking at 3 road games which -- just like Arkansas and TCU -- will be, BY FAR, their biggest home games of the year (Baylor, Iowa State, West Virginia).  We're barely 1-1 in those games so far, and each one of those remaining home teams is good enough to beat a Texas team with a porous offensive line and with question marks at every level of the defense.  The chance of 3-0 in those road games is probably much lower than 20%.

(edit to add).   Say we go .500 the next two weeks, then drop one of the road games... we'd be 9-3 and highly likely in the Big 12 championship.  "Undefeated the rest of the way" is extremely unlikely, but 9-3 with a spot in the championship game... that's still a realistic outcome, and would represent a very successful year 1 under Sark.  It would also make our sales pitch on signing day pretty strong.

Arkansas still has 3 more losses on the table. They are far from a great football team.

9-3 is our ceiling IMHO. That is better than ags 7-5 ceiling.

Yes Arkansas aggie and LSU are going to be, in some order, 5-6-7 in the West.

Potentially top 10.  Don't Iowa and PSU play next weekend?  One will lose, and if we beat OU then OSU idles and potentially moves up being 5-0.

Nope. Probable? Yes. Ceiling? Nah. We can win every other game we play

Last time psu and Iowa were both in the top 5 was 1985.

Which teams left on our schedule do you feel like we have no chance at beating? Looks to me we are good enough to beat all the teams left on the schedule.

OSU is off this week, so they will likely not get moved into the Top 10 should Texas beat OU and the loser of Penn State and Iowa. Though Michigan State losing at Rutgers could help, but it is doubtful. Also, Michigan is at Nebraska.

Yet you keep talking about it. Why not just enjoy wins, and not having Herman or Strong as a coach?

My prediction before the season was 9-3. I didn’t waver from that after Arky and won’t now.

I like figuring out what it would take for my team to win the National title at all times. It’s a fun exercise for me to daydream. Just like buying the occasional lotto ticket- imagining what I’d do with the money, and not even bothering to look at the ticket when the numbers get called. I know it’s not going to happen but it’s fun for me. The later in the season you can keep up with a plausible scenario where, if you win out, you accomplish X, the more fun the year is.
I’m very much enjoying the win against TCU. It enabled me to play this game again today. After the next time we lose the game is over. Why not enjoy it now before lowering our goals?

He meant besides Kansas.

I would not count on us being ahead of OU even with a win unless it’s a blowout (and that’s unlikely). Depending on how the games shake out, I could see us moving up to 12-14, and OU falling to 10-12. They get the benefit of the doubt we seldom do (and haven’t yearned in years).

17 minutes ago, ztejas said:

That's the joke...

These rankings right now don't mean anything other than the bragging rights for the fans. We are not a playoff team this year, so our goal should be to make it to the Big 12 tournament game and hopefully win it. We can do that even if we lose to one of the Oklahoma schools but it would be awesome if we could expose OU next week for the frauds they are. We are playing well at home but all our road games will be an adventure until the defense improves and we learn how to connect on our medium to long range throws. I am hoping, with more reps, our QB and WRs will start to gell.

I know it's all BS but Longhorns not getting much ranking love this year.

The system behind it must be tired of over-ranking us and then watching us lose the next game.

Still very surprised to see Gators above us though.

A lot will depend on how it goes from here on out for Domer.  They got taken to OT by a horrific FSU team, barely beat Toledo, beat Purdue (meh) and struggled with the worst Wisconsin team in two decades for 3 quarters before Wisconsin decided to give up a kick return and two pick 6s in the 4Q.  The ACC is ass my dude but the Orange slices could beat them and never discount a very wounded USC from fucking around and winning.  Plus like 5 teams have byes before they play Notre Dame.

Not to mention these teams like Cincy always seem to fuck up somewhere along the way and now they will most certainly have a target on their back each week and they are not a program used to being the hunted.

5 hours ago, Herpa Derpa said:

True, but it is a win against a Top 10 P5 program on the road.

Cincy should run the table and will be heavily favored in all of their remaining games. In the AAC, they've had a target on their back for a few years now and have dominated. They have a well regarded Coach that has made the program a consistent winner. They lost by a field goal to potential playoff participant Georgia in the 2020 Peach Bowl, their only loss on the year. If they do make it to the end unscathed, they will have the best argument for a G5 team since the onset of the playoff era. And they still won't get in unless there is total chaos in the P5. Expanded playoffs or same old same old.

But Cincy will drop a game.  The AAC is too balanced at the top for anyone without Florida recruits to run the table.  Then they will recycle the same goal post shifting eye testing question evading platitudes about how 11-1 SEC or 11-1 BUG actually had a better year.

Cincy went undefeated last year. And none of the Florida teams are worth a shit this year.

Call me crazy, but I'm thinking aggy won't get many votes after Bama pushes their shit in next Saturday night.

I don’t think Casey has the arm strength to ever have a great long passing game, which that sucks because our run game opens up those opportunities.  On a receiver in stride, high arcs mean timing and accuracy have to be near perfect while flatter trajectories allow for a catchable ball along a longer glide path.
it’s easier to throw the ball through an upright tire than into a tire laying flat.

Agree with your assessment though, and while Casey has limitations I think what he’s going to need is some stud receivers who can catch the ball then do shit after the catch.  Lil Jordan would be perfect compliment to Casey and a short to mid throwing game.

Yes, we could use someone like Lil Jordan or a surehanded guy like Duvernay. I am willing to give Casey and the WRs few more games to see if they can get the long bomb timing right but I agree that the high arcing long balls are not going to work.

We are 5th in FEI but 27th in SP+.  Anyone who understands this shit and can explain what about this team is causing the difference?  Both are measuring opponent-adjusted efficiency, but FEI is per possession and SP+ is per play?  I did see we were #2 in the nation in 3rd down conversions, so that could be why our possession numbers are better.
