If supply is down doesn't it stand to reason prices would go up ?  Call me crazy.

I understand scarcity and elastic pricing.  What I’m saying is what is causing the drop in supply?

Both are good brands so that is not an issue.  Omega will have in-house movements and some horological stuff that makes them better and also more iconic watches (moon watch, James Bond watches)  I prefer Omega as their watches tend to be “less busy” and more my style but I can’t stress enough that you should buy the watch that you like the most.  So when comparing between the two you need to figure out which one “calls” to you and that is what I would go with.  Also, are you looking at a dive watch, chronometer, etc…. That would help in figuring out which kind of watch you want and then compare the two choices within each of those brands.

I have both.  Colt Chrono and Speedy.  I prefer the Omega.  Also - what’s your price point?  Your average Breitling will usually be less expensive at retail than Omega.

Honestly man, if you’re between 8-9k, unless your getting a nice omega - look at other brands.

@ChiTownDoc and @G650 are good sounding boards depending on what you’re looking for.

Wife has this.  I'd never wear it and I wear some seriously obnoxious shit... much like anything else in the watch space, it's value has gone through the roof over the last 5 years so I guess it beats buying more shoes.  Yay

There's great Omega's you can get in that range.  My first nice watch (anything over 1000) was a panerai in that range.  God damn, I loved that watch.  They're big so if you're on the smaller side those may not work.  Happy hunting.

The moonphase’s from Omega are really nice - and honestly can be worn daily or as a nice dress watch.

I’m an IWC snob personally.  You can get a gold case Portuguese for around those numbers if you look.

If you like breitling and omega shop both.  If you look hard enough you might be able to get both for your budget.

So which Omega do you like?  Seamaster (dive watch)?  Speed master (chrono)?  Do you want something in the 40 MM range or something bigger?  What color dial (black/white/blue/green)?  Rolex will be an issue because of the absurd price and scarcity of their models.  Best you can get is a date just but even those are difficult now and really not worth the gamesmanship to get one.  I agree with ChiTown that Panerai is great in that price range.  Omega also along with IWC.  Not a fan of Breitling.

They did release a 38mm luminor due in gold.  I think it’s meant for the ladies though.

Some variant of the Portugueser is my next watch purchase.  A lot going on this year so it will have to wait.

I tend to like the Speedmaster more. I like bigger watches. I generally fall for the black first then blue then white.

I like IWC and Panerai. No interest in Rolex at any price point.

Gold is not my thing aside from the krugerrands sitting in my safe next to my ammo, but IWC doesn’t make an ugly watch.

I love the IWC, but have stepped back from the big ticket watches the last several years.  I really think when I pull the trigger on a bigger dollar watch (more than $7k) it's gonna be GO.

Sorry, but gotta hit you with the obligatory know how I know you're gay card.... 😜  That is a hit in Singapore, and China though, not gay there....

Men should never wear diamonds...... ever, unless it's the ace of diamonds up the sleeve.  I think Tiffany & Co. refused the commission on a team Superbowl ring based on that very mantra.

I posted this on the old site but you saying I shouldn’t be wearing my father’s old diamond/onyx watch with a tux? It gives me that seventies vibe.

Not to distract from the silly anti-diamond rhetoric, but you shouldn't wear any watch with a tux/dinner suit.

This thread makes me feel poor. Curious what the household income range is for you guys. 100K - $200K, $200K - $300K, $300K+?

My wife and I make good money, but I'd find it hard to pull a trigger on anything > $3K for myself without a LOT of hemming and hawing.

Finally found my primary target: ‘77 Datejust

Loved the formal leather band but couldn’t resist pairing with a Cascadia

It's more a question of personal priorities - some people drive a 100k car and live in a $500k house, but wear a $40 watch and eat $10 meals while wearing $100 clothes/shoes, while taking $25k vacation trips. Those are just some of the expense areas that readily come to mind where it's really personal what you prefer to pay up for/have very nice, and what areas you really just dgaf. Plug in your own dollar values for those items and see what you value.

FWIW I bought my first Speedmaster when I was making barely 60, a few years into the workforce. The Speedmaster was intended for collecting and was an 'investment' - I haven't worn it 10 times in more than 10 years. I daily wear a $30 Casio.

Like @Sam Lin said, a lot of it is personal priorities. I'm not nearly the collector that some in this thread are and I'm not Surly 1%, but I have a couple of nice watches that most people would consider "expensive". On the other hand, the TVs in my house are 15 year old 720p LCDs, whereas some people want to have the newest 4K OLED. I drive a Toyota, other people want to drive an Audi.

The other thing is that lots of people that are into watches buy and sell them pretty frequently. Few people have a drawer full of $10k watches collecting dust. The right kind of watch will hold its value fairly well, so it's different from spending $10k on a vacation and then that money is gone forever.

I wish someone could explain this to my wife.  I have watches that have increased in value and are actually good investments.  I have a watch right now that if I took it to Philadelphia it would be worth fifty bucks.  The trips we take are great for memories and all that but that money is gone forever unlike the watches I collect.

Somewhat this.  I look at watches as something I like and as a tangible asset investment.  Sure I have a 3-4 of them, I also wear them all pretty regularly or for specific occasions and could probably flip them all relatively quickly for 3/4K profit on each.

Also - I never pay retail for them, like any major purchase.  I shop the fuck out of anything I buy over $1k and usually bitch about it the entire time.  I can afford not to but you don’t retain/build wealth by spending all your money.

I suppose my priority is to fix up the house and save for retirement. I can probably count on one hand the things I bought for myself that cost more than $1K, and that includes 3 cars.

Nicest watch I have is a Speedmaster that I bought used a few years ago. I love it, but it barely gets wrist time because it's fragile compared to the Seiko tank diver I bought last year.

Luckily I have a wife who has no such qualms about spending money on herself.

We could have a whole "Wives and the stupid shit they bought" thread, I'm sure.

The moment I decided to buy a nice watch I knew I’d wear it all the time. It might be an investment but I see it as a consumable, one that reminds me I’ve worked hard, I’ve been extremely lucky, that I play hard and that I can’t take it with me.  The next watch I buy and the one after that and the one after that will be consumables too.
