March 7Mar 7 Author Picked up this Laco Leipzig Erbstück. Laco artificially ages/patinas this model to make it look old and well worn. I'm digging it.

Super cool, i normally don't like faux patina, but it really works on this one. i have a 46mm IWC big pilot. What is the size? Also, Sark rocking a submariner in today's presser.

Been thinking of unloading that for a 43mm Big Pilot.

I would have guessed 46mm at a minimum The real Luftwaffe watches were 55mm, and several thousand dollars now, so that was out of the question. Laco also makes this watch in a 39mm version, but that’s too small for what this watch is pretending to be.

On a bare wrist it would look as oversized back then as it does today.

March 18Mar 18 My El Primero slipped from my hand when I was putting it on and I cracked the crystal. Zenith wants $1,600 to replace the crystal (they say it needs a full service in addition to the $600 charge for the crystal). I call bullshit.

It could be that they think that an impact hard enough to break a sapphire crystal means the movement needs to be inspected and serviced. That's not an outrageous take. But if you disagree, find someone to just do the crystal.
March 19Mar 19 I think the standard service is $750 so they must be quoting additional part replacement vs a standard service.

My vote is for a birth year Tudor Princess but for real my Mexican friends said to leave the watches at home Well that’s because Mrs. Laz is a one of a kind, all star woman. and re leaving the watches at home - that’s one of my big complaints about Mexico I like to wear nice things and the older I get the more I like them. It’s maybe a top 5 hardest thing to get over when I think about us moving to Mexico.

March 22Mar 22 Went shopping in the Taipei 101 building mall and the luxury watches were well represented. Saw a A Lange & Sohne Lange 1 in person for the first time. Too bad my CC limit isn’t high enough or else I would have bought 2. OTOH, I went to the Omega store and now want the Snoopy Speedmaster. More affordable at $10,400, but really can’t justify it with kids still needing to go to college.
March 26Mar 26 Not sure who shoved what watch where but these are mammy’s and poppy’s watches, my wife’s great grandmother and great grandfather…. Pretty cool. Elgin and Trenton Watch Company. Not worth a whole lot but I think they’re kinda cool. Edited March 26Mar 26 by troph

March 28Mar 28 It could be that they think that an impact hard enough to break a sapphire crystal means the movement needs to be inspected and serviced. That's not an outrageous take. But if you disagree, find someone to just do the crystal. My main problem with the estimate is there was no explanation of what it why it needed anything. Just an “Accept” or “Decline” option. They sent the watch back and a document inside noted their analysis and what they thought needed to be done to the watch. They said the crown and pushers were dented (if they are it’s not very noticeable). I’m mostly frustrated but the poor communication and/explanation. Oh, and I had to call twice to get them to remind them to send the estimate after they told me it was available.

No jewelry, trade down the engagement / wedding ring, no bling at all. I has a sad. FWIW, I lived in Mexico for a couple years a little over a decade ago. Half my colleagues/roommates wore stainless Subs, as most were middle to exec mgt for a large diving contractor. I know things have changed down there some since then, but just another reference.
April 1Apr 1 Grand Seiko just released the new benchmark for high-accuracy watches, the SLGB001. Comes with the new Caliber 9RB2 Spring Drive movement, accurate to ±20 sec./year and just 11.4 mm thick. And it finally gets a bracelet with tool-less micro-adjust. Starting price is $11K. Oh, and Rolex announced an integrated bracelet Land-Dweller. Just 9.7 mm thick, with a new caliber 7135 hi-beat movement (5 Hz frequency). No more Swiss lever escapement - I don't know the technological particulars of the movement, but a lot of new patents are involved. Starting at $14K. Edited April 1Apr 1 by satyanash

April 1Apr 1 Fratello and Hodinkee noted that in their reviews as well. Hodinkee has a write up on the new Rolex movement but I think I need to see actual video to get a sense of what it is doing differently
April 1Apr 1 Bozo Casanova Watches and Wonders release summary: 1) Rolex: The Bling Dweller, the Hospice Timer, Malaise-Era upgrades. Combined with the elimination of the Milgauss and the transition of the larger Explorer 1 from 39 to 40mm to consolidate cases this is officially the weakest Rolex lineup ever. 3/10 2) Cartier: A badass Tank LC, a Jump Hour you will never see, a Panthere for the most popular drag queen in Moscow, and some really gaudy jewelry. I love it. 12/10 3) Tudor: biggest surprise of the show. Showed up with nothing new to say. maybe next year. 0/10 4) Oris: just the Big Crown, but now with a bunch of colors. Actually … great? 8/10 5) JLC: WE GOT MORE REVERSOS! 10/10 6) Tag: Great new Carrera, hideous new Solargraph. They understand who they are for, at last. 7/10 Edited April 1Apr 1 by Bozo_Casanova

I can’t believe some of the shit people put on their wrist.

May 20May 20 Got a hankerin' for a Panerai Luminor, but can't justify spending $9K for a watch. Saw this as an affordable option. Thoughts?
May 20May 20 Author You can get a pre owned Panerai for $3-4k. Go that route as opposed to spending $1k on that wannabe Panerai. https://www.watchrecon.com/?query=panerai

May 21May 21 My 28 yr old gray market Seamaster started skipping the date ahead 2 or 3 days each day. Guess I need it worked on again. Had it serviced 8-9 years ago and it was ~$1000 and I sent it someplace back east. The local Omega shop won’t touch it. Any good local (Houston) independent watchmakers that folks trust?
