Love me some Stapleton and Gosling is a goddamn treasure, but I would toss them both out of a moving plane for a chance to be murdered by Dua Lipa.

She looks hot as fuck for an Albanian disco singer.  Diidn't realize how popular she was, I think I remember her as a  musical guest awhile back.  But first time actually hosting.

She's also quite the activist/philanthropist/advocate, so trigger warning for some viewers.  And based on her red carpet photos at the "Barbie" premiere, I would call her buttocks, "Strong to Moderately Strong"

She did Day Drinking with Seth and was pretty funny.

Do you want to see Due Lipa and Annie Clark eye fuck each other for 3 minutes?  Of course you do:

So I picked up this skit from another thread.  After watching, it is quite clear that previous generations of SNL cast members were better and rehearsed much more than the recent casts.  It drives me crazy when no one in a skit can give a line without reading it off cue cards.  I get that some of the hosts are outside of their comfort zones, but the regulars should be able to learn their lines.

Nothing will ever top the Dean Martin show.

I’ve been considering the possibility recently that I’ve aged out of SNL, after watching it for the last 35-ish years. I find about half of the current cast to be deeply unfunny.

Like, just as one example, Dismukes. I don’t get it. He’s been on a few years now and I don’t think I’ve laughed once at anything he’s done.

I wonder if the current cast is too busy filming commercials to be bothered to learn their lines. Everybody except the minor male players are routinely booking commercials. They don’t film those in NYC.

Hell Kennan had a sitcom filmed in LA while on the show. Methinks the regulars are doing a lot of shit on Zoom and rolling up in person for dress rehearsal, live show, and getting on a plane the next day.

Now you’ve done it.  This post is a dog whistle for YGIFS and an inevitable seven paragraph post on the subject.

Just breaking down the show man, it's a cultural icon.  Fair point about Dismukes.  He's kind of a redundant everyman/utility cast member that Mikey Day or Keenan can still easily handle.  But I got a soft spot for him since he's a Longhorn.  Speaking of soft spots---when are Ego and Chloe gonna make out in a sketch.  I'm still aroused from Wiig and Heidi grinding asses a few weeks back, but I am willing to learn...

Maybe Dismukes does a lot of writing.

Yeah, that is how he got his start on the show.  I think he put in ~4 seasons as a really good writer (multiple Emmy noms.).  Then I think as Kyle Mooney was planning to leave, Dismukes maybe seemed like the small, nerdy guy.  But he doesn't really fit that either.  He's not particularly great at music-based sketches or impressions.  But a solid utility guy a la Mikey Day.  He's got decent screen presence and obviously writes great stuff, so I bet he can stick around for awhile.

Obviously some longer-tenured cast members just decide to move on after this season of their own accord.  I like most of the younger cast, but were I Troast or Walker, I may think about a backup plan next season.  All kinda speculation about what Lorne will do for the 50th.    Only three more episodes to go this season...

Troast

I like her. Actually I think all the women are pretty much running laps around the men on this cast.

I agree the women are funnier than the men this season.  And she's certainly talented and funny and has breadth. She's just the least funny on the totem pole is all, which is not an insult---that's a  deep starting lineup they've got.  She certainly could shine more if not for the shadows over her.  Heidi has really stepped up her game in the last couple of seasons.  Fineman isn't going anywhere.  Ego is probably the funniest overall female cast member.  Punkie is hilarious to me but doesn't have much range, but kills it whenever they use her right.  And as  we've all stated, Sherman has so much upside, she can be the next McKinnon in the very near future.  And while they don't identify as a female, Molly plays mostly 'women' roles in sketches and while not quite like Sherman, Molly has a ton of upside.  Not saying she should go, but it Lorne trims things or brings back some folks for the 50th, Troast may be the first to go.  But that she's also kinda the "4th Wheel" to the PDD guys, could be a saving grace for her.  Because those sketches absolutely kill 90% of the time.

I watched SNL a few weeks ago for the first time in many years and the first thing that I noticed was that it seemed like everyone was reading their lines off of cue cards. I found it to be very distracting

That cold open was one of the worst I’ve seen in a long, long time.

Yeah that was dumb. Also weak monologue.

Holy shit that London 1897 skit was fucking cringe. Barely even got a laugh from the audience.

First third of the show has been beyond bad.  But she is absolutely gorgeous.  I hope they turn it around.  But doubtful.   They were due for a dud

Were you guys ever fans of the Roxbury skits with Will and Kattan?

I always laughed, but I love Farrell. I think they toed the line pretty good between creepy and rapey. The film waters them down and leans into the silly. It’s a better movie if they’re cokehead hanger ons of Emilio Estevez.

Jake G is good in everything.

This girl doing the music, that is the most obvious lip-synching you'll see.  They really should hold your feet to the fire and make you sing live when you're on the show.

Colin finally got Che.

I didn't think anything this season could be worse than last weeks dogshit, but they just topped it.

Rachel Dratch Snl GIF by Saturday Night Live

I didn’t laugh at a single sketch. I maybe cracked a smile at the Kendrick Lamar joke but it could been executed better.

I’ll give them credit for not going for the low bar and making every sketch about how handsome Jake G is.

Who knew warm body Mikey Day’s only believable impression is Shaggy from Scooby Doo?

Maybe the show is slipping, maybe not, but Weekend Update with Jost and Che is damned funny and these joke swaps are a great example.

Also, the Sarah Sherman bits where she uses a persona to totally roast Jost put me in stitches. Dude doesn't take himself too seriously. But he's married to ScarJo so I guess he's pretty secure with where he's at in life.

Yeah if I were Jost I'd be laughing all the way to the bedroom.

The Dean Martin show was SNL before SNL.

I originally missed this skit on George Washington's dream for America, but here it is:

Nate killed on SNL that night, especially for such a dry and reserved guy.  I told this story way upthread, but Lobo repeats himself.

A mutual friend of Nate and I's (I don't know Nate at all), had this great long-bit about the abbreviation of the states down to 2-letters.  And the premise of the bit is that he was watching a documentary about it, which was bullshit.  But he's pretending to recant the documentary as the foundation of his jokes.  I think it's one the best long-form bits in comedy history.  But Gary sat on it for years, because he knew if people didn't buy into the documentary hook at the start, they'd just think he was being weird just to be weird.  But Gary sees this documentary I think right before Covid or during lockdown, about the invention of the Helvetica font.  And figures, if people think that's compelling, I can certainly now do my bit about the state abbreviations.  So it kills.  Gary has collaborated with other SNL writers like Mulaney and Colin Quinn, as well as many standup hosts (sadly, Dane Cook among them).

Anyway, Bargatze calls him up---along with several other standup comics, and thinks back to Gary's abbreviation bit.  And Nate says he's been sitting on this idea for a bit about the goofiness of America's system of weights and measures versus the metric system.  But it won't really work in standup format.  But he thinks about Garry's ability to do this mundane shit and make it funny.  So they chatter about it a lot two weeks before Nate does his week at SNL.  Obviously, the writing staff at SNL does most of the heavy lifting since Nate can't just work on the one sketch, with all the other skits, pre-recorded clips, promos, stand-up sets in Manhattan, and Late Night appearances.  But he worked with them a fair amount to flesh out this sketch about Washington and the Metric System with Gary's encouragement.  All because a dumb documentary about a fucking font made some comics realize, "Oh, you literally make the most mundane, boring shit funny if you got the chops."  Not a week goes by that my 9yo daughter and I don't watch this Bargetze sketch because she loves the dry ludicrousness of it and it makes her think about why nobody knows how many yards are in a mile.

Nate is really blowing up right now as a result of this appearance and his last special.  He deserves it.  Helluva good guy who put in his years and finally turned the corner when he got his confidence level up.  Again, I don't know him, but know some comics who do.  And they frequently root against one another because they got their own internal shit going on (as most artists do), but they all love Nate and are rooting for him.  /csb

I saw Harry Blackstone do that trick with 2 goats and a hankerchief

And because of that animal trick, Kramer got to know another animal handler/variety show regular, Jim Fowler.  Practically raised his kids.

This one got me.

Kenan Thompson being ignored was funny AF.

Nate saying "Nobody knows" made me LOL.
