January 21Jan 21 More body language bullshit speculation. https://ew.com/dave-chappelle-bowen-yang-hug-for-snl-goodbyes-year-after-awkward-photo-8777105 It was interesting that Yang didn’t appear in a single Chappelle sketch. If a cast member hates the host do they just play hooky all week? Secure cast members can probably get away with it. I wouldn’t recommend it for Emil Wakim
January 21Jan 21 Ya'll are hating that boy Yang way too much...i'm not saying he needs to be on more, but man ya'll can beat that dead horse. Most of this season has been entertaining to very good. It's interesting to hear that Lorne wanted Chappelle for the Election episode...but hell, settling for Bill Burr and getting just as much of a biting commentary probably worked out great for them.
January 22Jan 22 Last time Chapelle was on his monologue sucked. This time? He killed. That was great.

January 22Jan 22 Bowen Yang is announcing the Oscar nominations tomorrow morning in case all the people who really love him on this thread would like to tune in.
January 23Jan 23 I finished the 4 episode Beyond Saturday Night documentary. Scattershooting: - The 4th episode about Season 11 was my favorite. I’ll give them credit for allowing Wayans to talk some shit and tell his side of the story. Very cool of Lorne to invite him back to perform his stand up. - Pretty interesting that terrific comedic actors like Downey and Anthony Michael Hall didn’t do well on SNL. Movie stars, but not sketch performers. Great pivot in Season 12 to cast the improv greats of their time. - I need to watch more of Season 10. Holy shit what a cast. That’s an impossible act to follow for first timers. - I love that they had to use archival footage from 2005 for ALL of the Lorne interviews on Season 11. In fact, episode 3 is the only episode that includes a Lorne interview. I guess he’s feigning modesty that he won’t sit for interviews on his own show. - It was fun watching the old auditions and casting decisions in episode 1. The casts were probably better in the past because of less nepotism. I think Lorne wants a smooth operation now, and he’ll cast nepo babies because they know what to do and how to act at Studio 8H. - While not a nepo baby, from what I’ve gathered everybody in the New York Comedy Community was rooting/pushing for Pete Davidson. No problem with casting him on the show, but he was consistently the worst performing cast member while appearing in the most sketches. Lorne played favorites, and it cost the show. He then doubles down on Davidson and produces his show on Peacock. If you can’t make show with Joe Pesci, Edie Falco, and Brad Garrett work, then problem is with your star. Lorne is so established and comfortable I doubt he’s ever given it a second thought.

Basically, she said when she was on the writing staff, written sketches were under heavy constant criticism, got shit talked on all week....so the crap got weeded out....but that doesn't really happen anymore. Which leaves us with the current echo chamber product.

I guess he cares about as much as Dick Wolf and Chuck Lorre if the show is good. NBC will put it on the air, and people will watch it. There’s some scuttlebutt that the NBC execs believe SNL is too expensive, and they’d like to reduce costs after the 50th Season. The SNL beat writers have pushed back that it’s a sacrosanct product as long as Lorne is there. I doubt NBC will slash costs, and I doubt he’ll ever retires health permitting.

We’ll only ever know what they show us. I can only think of one tell all book, and it was published for the 30th anniversary. What I saw in the doc: - The writers’ room really doesn’t exist anymore. It looked an initial meeting with the host, full cast, and writers. Then writing teams of 2-3 broke off into small groups, sometimes with cast members, and basically write the nuts and bolts of the show. Writing night, cast goes home at midnight. Writers stay up all night writing the show. Pitch to Lorne on Thursday. Lorne picks the show, and rehearsal on Friday. - I think regulars are maybe there for parts of Tuesday and Wednesday, Lorne meeting on Thursday, rehearsal Friday, and show on Saturday. - I don’t think current cast members are writing nearly as much as in the past. As the doc hammered home, if you want to be on the show, you have to write your own sketches. Could be an aftershock of the strikes. Maybe it’s not a strength of the current cast. Maybe they don’t care. - The old system is closed. Doing well on a SNL isn’t going to get a cast member a network sitcom. With all the packaging, it won’t get them a movie either. There’s no motivation to be great. Why take risks when longevity is key? Many appearances lead to becoming a familiar face for commercial work like Kennan and Heidi Gardner. - I’m sure they got a ton of help getting it made, but at least Please Don’t Destroy took a swing and made their own movie. The scenes with Conan are gold.
January 23Jan 23 Kenan has had two failed sitcoms I think. Pete Davidson and some of the other recent cast members might also have careers post-SNL. We probably won't ever be rid of Bowen Yang.

January 23Jan 23 so by “the old system”, we’re talking about pohler, fey, and hader? the old days were all about actors leaving to do movies. sitcoms were mostly given to stand-ups, not sketch comedy players.
January 26Jan 26 holy shit the cold open was both hysterical and horrifying 🤣😫 JAJ is going to live in uncanny valley the next four years. if he doesn't get arrested, deported, murdered, etc. haha the dog park was awesome. also loved the God/creation movie. Chalamet is a great host, they've come a long way from tiny 🐎 😆 Edited January 26Jan 26 by mchookem
January 26Jan 26 I think likability might be Chalamet’s super power. Good cold open, painfully bad Weekend Update, no memorable sketches, pretty underwhelming episode given the host. Edited January 26Jan 26 by billfromlaketravis
January 26Jan 26 The open was great and my wife and I loved "Bungee Fitness", which I have now discovered is a real thing. I'd be willing to bet that the bungee fitness people have record sign-up's next week.
January 26Jan 26 The coffee shop sketch cracked me up but I usually like the random shit the best. Edited January 26Jan 26 by 4th&Five
January 26Jan 26 The pr folk for the Bob Dylan Center scored, placing an ad there with Chalamet doing Dylan songs and the interest in A Complete Unknown.

January 26Jan 26 Weakest weekend update in a while. Dog park was great. Overall a meh episode for me.
January 27Jan 27 Bad writing all around. Chalamet was excellent, he can't save the writing. He's a pro. It's so nice to see the host immersed in sketches and they're not glancing at cue cards. Beyond that, he crushed it musically. I understand why he's riding this Dylan wave, and at least he did 3 pretty obscure Dylan tunes, but I hope he continues to learn and record and (hopefully) write. That acoustic tune kicked ass. He has a very natural voice and a very clear vision of what he wants to do with a song.

January 28Jan 28 8 hours ago, C-Man said: Speaking of this, anybody know why the musical performances are not included in the SNL episodes on Peacock? I think it had to do with the music rights NBC bought/didn’t buy, but someone can correct me if I’m wrong. If you are watching on Peacock they have all the music performances until like 1980 I think. They also have the complete episodes in those first 4/5 seasons or so and then it switches to kind of a best of epidsode for everything else and loses the music performances. It sucks because I can’t imagine the great performances from the 80s-90s that are lost forever I am guessing. Would really like to watch Lionel Richie when he sang “Truly” on the Eddie Murphy hosted show in the early 80’s. For some reason that musical appearance is something I remember seeing live and in re runs years ago.
January 28Jan 28 Yeah I assume it's a matter of rights to the music. There are different levels of licensing, and if short-term more limited licenses were originally purchased for the initial airing of a television show, they might not apply later in time when a show is released for syndication. Streaming has made it even more complex, to the point where in some older shows, the original background music has been replaced with cheaper, generic tunes.

Quote Wickline's mother is Marcella "Marcy" Hardart, a pediatrician who previously worked as an assistant to SNL creator/producer Lorne Michaels,[2] and a manager at MTV.[3] Her father is Matt Wickline, a writer for Late Night with David Letterman and In Living Color.[3] (from wikipedia, take it for what it's worth)

In the mean time...
January 31Jan 31 I like the video of the R&R HOF artists, but I wish is had the date of the SNL performance listed as opposed to the year they were inducted into the HOF.
February 1Feb 1 Finally getting around to watching 50 Years of Music. The mashup Questlove did at the beginning was great and reminds me of Girl Talk’s Feed the Animals and All Day albums
