I’d insert the Tyler Derden quote on being clever if I wasn’t an old.

Well... we did score 63. We could have scored 70 - this week and last.

He quit but nice spin.

Define “quit.” Just because someone else tweeted that he quit doesn’t mean he technically quit. Maybe he mentally quit a year ago and that was his problem. It’s not like he filed paperwork to enter the transfer portal or disenrolled from school. If for some reason he wanted to stay on the team and the coaches wanted to keep him then it would’ve just been an ugly emotional outburst. Obviously that wasn’t going to happen. Ultimately he was escorted from the field by a member of the staff.

Oh ya he wrote that himself.

Last night I let my emotions get the best of me. For that I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches and Bucceye Nation. I made a mistake and know that I need to be better and do better. I’m going to take this time to reflecc and work on my mental well-being.

Leaving your team in the middle of a game and throwing your uniform away.

That's a pretty accurate, succinct, definition right there.

That’s an oversimplification and not technically what happened. He tried to walk off the field, was corralled back, threw his gloves into the stands and tried to take off his jersey. That’s not exactly throwing his uniform away. The term “quit” can be kind of nebulous. Like I said, maybe he “quit” mentally long before the game. I don’t follow Twitter closely but apparently he posted at least one negative tweet during the offseason. The story is the sideline tantrum. Saying he “quit” makes for a good and easily consumable headline.

Tweeting “Fucc Ohio State” was burning a bridge and he couldn’t come back from that. The sideline tantrum is the story. And the tweet was a symptom of social media. Don’t think for a minute that other players haven’t gotten pissed off at their programs and coaches and players and said the same thing to family and friends. I’ve heard of players getting in fights in practice and the locker room, of players storming out of practice, and skipping practice, and then even going on to be successful players. Maurice Clarett famously had a confrontation with RB Coach Tim Spencer at Northwestern in 2002. But he was a star player and went on to help them win a national championship.

It’s more complicated than just saying he “quit.” He never actually said “I quit.” And never had a chance to even skip practice. What would’ve happened if there was no such thing as Twitter where he could post “Fucc Ohio State?” Either way it wasn’t going to earn him more playing time. But it probably makes it harder for him to continue his career as a football player.

The bigger story, imo, is why haven’t we heard anything from Buckeye LB coach Al Washington? The LB corps hasn’t been up to snuff since Luke Fickell left to take the Cincinnati job. LB Tommy Eichenberg played 53 snaps against Tulsa without registering a single tackle. Maybe that factors into why Dallas Gant entered the transfer portal and why Pope threw a fit. And then there’s the whole transfer portal and the four-game redshirt rule which can produce these sort of situations in the first place. And meanwhile tOSU has played three different QB’s while Quinn Ewers is skipping his senior year in high school and making $1.5 Million off of NIL without ever  seeing a single snap. And probably won’t all season unless there’s a rash of injuries.

It’s a new world and we’re just going to have to wait and see how it all shakes out. But in terms of what’s happening with the Buckeye LB’s, I think the first priority is probably to replace Al Washington.

tl;dr

You should do the same instead of trying to justify it.
