Wife and I are flying down to Louisiana next Saturday because my grandmother is turning 90 in Hammond.  We're going to stay over in the French Quarter on Saturday night before we spend a few days with them.   We went in fall 2019 and had a great time and stayed in Treme, but this time we'll be much closer to everything.  One thing we definitely want to do is check out a jazz club, so any recommendations would definitely be appreciated.

Also interested in any recommendations on where to eat.  We already did the coffee/beignets thing at CDM, hurricanes at Pat O'Brien's and all that stuff.  Would really like to find someplace really nice, maybe as a surprise.

Thanks!

My intel is very old, but I enjoyed a meal at Pere Antoine's on Royal Street. In general I like the Royal Street vibe better for almost everything.

Another place sadly appears closed, Central Grocery and Deli down by Place de France not far from CDM. Good muffalettas.

Honestly I find the best places by strolling around and smelling the food, if that's something you like to do too.

If you're wanting to only stay in the Quarter, GWFins or Restaurant Revolution are your best dinner bets. Good luck on reservations for next weekend though. Jazz playhouse at the Sonesta or Davenport lounge at the Ritz are good fur music.

If you can get out of the Quarter, hit Peche or Bywater American Bistro for food.  For jazz, dba and three muses on Frenchmen are good, I've never hit up Kermit Ruffins' place, but seen him online from there and he puts on a great show.

Any suggestions on places to catch live music in New Orleans?  I'm thinking of places like Empire/Mohawk/Continental Club/Scoot Inn... basically places to see good bands but not necessarily typical New Orleans jazz

Staying at the red dot... I like to walk... a lot... and I know that can be dodgy in parts of NO.  Given the location, where you would you avoid?

I'm really hoping to get an answer that does not look like this...

I’m staying next door to you tomorrow.  Let me know if you get stabbed tonight.

I remember that area seeming safe last time I went.

That's quite a drive.  You'd be better off hitting those places when you're in Austin.

Not staying there yet.  You'll have tell me if you bleed out.

If only there were a 47 page thread on NOLA that could provide some insight...🤔

We stayed a little farther down on St. Charles in April.  I think I confine walking to the Garden District between St. Charles and Magazine.  You can cover many miles up St. Charles and back down Prytania.  Walking the Garden District and looking at the bad ass old houses is one of my favorite things to do in NO.

We stayed in that area for Jazz fest a few years ago.  It was great.  Garden District and Irish Channel have some solid food spots.  Molly's Rise and Shine and Ruby Slipper for Breakfast/brunch, Turkey & the Wolf is awesome sandwich place.

And you're right down the street from Igor's, great dive bar.

We had bikes but did do what @Jerry Callo said and walked the Garden District.  The old houses in that area are fucking awesome.

Update... looks like we're now going to stay here?  Is death imminent?

I think you will probably live.  I don't think I would stay that close to the freeway due to the noise.  If you are driving, I hope it has off-street parking.

Central City gets extremely dicey about a block away from St Charles, so just head straight there at night. It’s gentrified quite a bit in the past decade but it was ground zero of the murder capital in the ‘90’s (Cash Money and No Limit ya heard) and I’ve never quite gotten over that.

Good news were 1 1/2 blocks from St. Charles.

I'll be Ubering from the airport and there are 10 of us together but, again, I like to walk.  Better do it with a scowl.
