Texas Monthly; "so you don't have to".

(It's right there in the post you quoted.) 😁

Won't you think of the poor pitmasters, out on the tarmac late at night, putting their heart and soul into their craft?

If I hear one more goddamn coworker not from Texas telling me they can't wait to pass through Austin to get some of that airport Salt Lick bbq, or worse.. Dickey's at Love Field...  ugh.

i ate at salt lick (not in the airport) about 5 years ago, it wasn't bad at all. i was with non bbq dedicated people, everyone loved it and had a great time

Before I moved back to Texas where I can have great BBQ any time I want, I would sometimes stop at the Cousins at DFW for a BBQ fix. Was it great? No. Was it passable enough to satisfy an itch for Texas BBQ for someone who didn’t have ready access to it? Yep.

Summer of last year I came down to visit the boy and his family and on the flight back home at Love I hit up Dickey’s for chopped beef sandwich and tea. It wasn’t the best but it beat the shit out of the Whataburger I got a few days prior at Love.

I dimly recall getting a barbecue sammich from Salt Lick in ABIA sometime in the past couple of years.  Nothing stunning, but perfectly serviceable.

Next time I'm in Harker Heights mid-day on an Wednesday or Thursday, I'll give it a try.  Next time will be the first time, though.  I've been wanting to try them for a couple years, but they have the worst days/hours in Texas barbecue.  I did have a sample at the Troubadour Festival in the summer of 2022 according to my spreadsheet.

I really enjoyed their food the couple times I visited their food truck when it was parked at the brewery in Hutto.  They're now moving around from brewery to brewery, so a little harder to hit.

Smashburger looks awesome.  BTW, 183 runs north and south.
