Went to Two Bros last weekend as it’s nearby the hospital we were at. It’s always a solid option. Certainly not elite but it’s fine.

Yessir. They do 3 different sauces, one maple espresso base, one vinegar base, and one more Texas style.
Their cook on the brisket can be a bit inconsistent but for an open all day place they do a real solid job. And their sides are always on point.

Rejino BBQ in Olton, TX.

Texas Trinity plate. The perfectly rendered moist brisket isn't the most visually perfect I've ever had, but OMG it was so good!!! Ribs were excellent. Jalapeno cheddar sausage had me wishing I had ordered the original, but live and learn, right? The hunk of meat on the bottom right is 3 burnt ends, and are the best ones I've ever had in my life.  I damned near went into the pie scene in When Harry Met Sally. The cucumber/tomato salad was PERFECTLY tangy for this carnivore plate and cutting that "meaty" taste that builds up on the palate.  The bacon mac & cheese was creamy and hit the spot. Did not use a drop of sauce, so I have no idea if it's good or not.  Typically I put some on my bread, but not today.
$41 after tip and adding on the burnt ends( best choice of the day!)
He does all kinds of daily specials like CFS or smoked burgers.  The time says he opens at 11, but I walked in at 10:45 and they were ready to go.  There is also a little express store in the same building with other stuff for the trip/ taking home.  I know it is a very remote location, but if you're ever out in the boonies between LBK and AMA; it is absolutely worth the trip.

Correct meat to bread ratio.

Just got my haircut and my barber (here near Raleigh where I live) was asking for a recco on barbecue for when he goes down with his kid for a football tournament at Rice. I have no clue - what’s the best spot in or near Rice Village?

Looks like they're permanently posted up outside Tikila's bar at 27th and Shepherd. Open Wed-Sat at 3, Sundays at noon.

Might have to swing by one weekend soon. That brisket elote looks damn good.

Nothing in Rice Village. Closest would be Goode Co and it’s trash. Truth is less than 5 miles from Reckling Park. Tell him to go there.

He was talking about if he needed to get a car or not and I explained to him that he should think of Houston like a state rather than a city. I'm not incredibly surprised that there's nothing great in Rice Village - I think he's motivated enough to go somewhere good. Man the barbecue here sucks.

Pit Room is the closest that's worth it and he more than likely won't have to wait an hour+

Truth is only another couple miles, but the wait will be significantly longer

It's Houston.  So it's very unlikely they're walking anywhere.  Head to Truth.  Guy is coming all the way from North Carolina.  What's another five miles to him?

And yes, rent a car.  Houston's fabled, mass-transit system, upon which Japan's allegedly is based, has that weekend off.

truth will have a long line.

Waiting in line at Truth when it's 90+ and humid is no picnic.

Pit Room is highly inconsistent. When they’re on, they’re in the top tier of Houston BBQ. When they’re off, they’re really, really off. I took my in-laws from Portland there one time on one of the latter days and I was flat out embarrassed by how bad it was.

Edit to add that Truth has dinner hours nowadays and the line isn’t as much a factor in the evenings as it is at lunch when everyone shows up at the same time.

I think the crowd here will take care of the disposal.  Also have some pintos and cornbread for sides.  My plan is to just feast on those.  Tomorrow the plan is an asston of wrapped jap peppers, sausage, and fajitas.

KG BBQ about to get very busy.
Guy Fieri was there yesterday.  Looks like it will be on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives soon.

I was in Austin for a few days this week to meet up with some friends, and did as much due diligence as possible. It was the week following UT's graduation so perhaps that's why we got lucky with much shorter lines than usual. Pulled up to Interstellar about 40 minutes before opening and were ~12th in line. The brisket was amazing, as were the short ribs with chimichurri, and jalapeno popper sausage.

Leroy & Lewis - we were there for dinner. Arrived about 5:30 and the line was short. The sausage and beef cheek were amazing. The brisket and flat iron, very good. The banana pudding tiramisu was phenomenal. The cfs was disappointing, as were a couple of the sides.

La Barbecue was the last stop of the week on Friday and it was absolutely incredible. Perfection all the way around. Arrived about 10:15 and we were 4th in line.

We also hit Loro for dinner, which was not great but the talent level and vibe were incredible. Franklin (took it to the vrbo so no pics.) Stopped in at 1 and the wait was 45 minutes. Oh...we went to Black's too. It was disappointing.

@Chopper what was your favorite between InterStellar, L&L, and LA Barbecue?

I thought La Barbecue was top but it could be recency bias as it was our last stop. InterStellar and LaB were 1 and 2 and really either one could be 1. It was my first visit to InterStellar and I hadn't been to LaB since it was a trailer. They both live up to the hype. The staff at InterStellar is much friendlier and service-oriented, just like Franklin. It didn't affect anything but the staff at LaB seemed jaded and like they dgaf if we were there that day or not. I only noticed because InterStellar was extremely hospitable, as was Franklin, of course. As for L&L, I would definitely make a return visit but they didn't seem on the same tier as LaB, InterStellar or Franklin.

One note about the peach pork belly at InterStellar - adding their mustard bbq sauce makes it a 10.

KG BBQ this morning.  Line started forming around 10:20 and there was about 20-25 at open.  Ordered to go, so no pictures.

20250518_102109.thumb.jpg.3b670239fef3a64c5deda69196813aa3.jpg

Pomegranate pork ribs, moist brisket, sumac and cinnamon rubbed lamb shoulder, and mac & cheese.  Ribs remain some of my favorites but brisket wasn't great.   Left too much fat on during the trim and intramuscular fat was not fully rendered.  Tried a couple bites of the lamb - well cooked and tasty.  Can't wait to have it with the chimichurri later.

Went to Parish Barbecue afterwards.

 20250518_111754.thumb.jpg.9a28d0457ce22d54a4ddcb2106b7fdc0.jpg

Three meat plate with moist brisket, smoked ham, pulled duck, remoulade slaw, and crawfish cornbread dressing.  Again, no pictures.  The brisket was incredible - they tossed in the entire burnt end.  Smoked ham was good.   Pulled duck was topped with duck skin cracklins and was great.  I like the remoulade sauce and will probably try to recreate it at home.   Crawfish cornbread dressing is as good as it sounds.

They have worked out a few kinks since they opened a few weeks ago.   If you haven't been, put it on your list.   Well worth it.

That sounds like a great bbq day. If you ever go back to KG I highly recommend the rice bowl with the smoked kofta. I've got to get over to Parrish.

If you know a really good BBQ joint that's not very busy, this is the weekend to soak it all in before Texas Monthly releases the new top 50 next week.

Smoke n Ash in Arlington is on DDD tonight.  It’s such a unique place with the Tex bbq-Ethiopian fusion.   I hope they followed Guy’s advice on preparing for the onslaught.  A NYT top 50 restaurant ranking, a Michelin rec, and TM praises won’t drive biz like a Guy Fieri visit.  If you haven’t tried it give a shot.

Got their bbq on GoldBelly a few years back. Fantastic

Took a friend to Leroy and Lewis this week, and it was phenomenal as always. Evan was working scale, which was neat to see.

For meat, we ordered brisket, beef cheek, and flat iron. All of it was 10/10. Tried the special bratwurst (not pictured) and it was not my cup of tea.

I now think Edgecraft has advanced beyond Butchers in Wellston.  It’s top drawer.

if you're out in the Lake LBJ area this weekend, hit up Mythic BBQ in Cottonwood Shores. Great traditional brisket, sausage and turkey. And chipotle cole slaw was fire. Special this weekend was pineapple glazed pork belly which was incredible.

Lots of people out here rave about it. I need to get up there. About 10 miles from the farm where my wife grew up (alas, sold it a few years ago). Not much up there and a fairly drab drive, but you will likely see a pheasant or two along the road if you are driving about dusk.

Big day tomorrow! Any predictions? Goldie's still gonna be number 1? Franklin falls out of the top 10?
