I cannot understand why there was such strong backlash against this art form.

I really dug this song back in the day, catchy as hell. I ended up getting the album and it was not good. Very sparse, even more sparse than this song, like somebody singing with a casio department store keyboard. It's still a good song. I wish they would remix it with some real instruments and stuff. Maybe give it to Lake Street Dive. They need songs and would kill it.

That reminds me of this track, which is surely Everlast's highest charting single.  I bought the album because of it . . . oof.  Terrible.

Speaking of Everlast:

Not hits by any stretch but also loved these:

I always love the irony of “Get used to one style and yo I might switch” - and he did.  Well played.

I’m guessing we’ve all had songs that put us in one specific place or memory. Well I heard this song for the first time in probably 20 years on the Lithium channel and I was teleported back to a summer in high school driving my dad’s car around Dallas. Csb. Still pretty catchy imo.

Didn't see these guys posted.

Per Wiki they apparently had some other singles chart but I don't recall ever hearing them.

Yep. Solid choice.

Ahhh but they had a bigger hit, at least in the U.K. Their top song on the charts was Letter from America, which is a good one. That being said, when I lived in Scotland, people went nuts to 500 miles (and still do).

I have always thought of the Verve as possibly the best one hit wonder ever (though I know they had a few other really good songs that were not hits).

Don’t really see this one as a OHW. The Verve had a lot of other songs that did well - Drugs Don’t Work, Lucky Man, Sonnet

Thought she was balls hot at the time - late 80s.

So this qualify?

Don't think so . . . "The Metro" and "No More Words" were hits, too.

I remember this song playing often on the radio station that our dad had on when we were kids. We used to make fun of it back then. I’ve since come to love it. Such a weird/unique song for its era.

Great fucking song.

Used to watch them at Club Dada shortly after Edie joined them. They were more of a percussion heavy jam band than a pop band. Kenny Withrow is a very good guitarist and a Jerry Garcia fan. This was when Dada was doing Grateful Dead jam sessions every Sat. afternoon. His solo on that song is very tasty. Not a lot of pop songs had cool guitar solos at the time.
Boom! They got popular, had to fire Brandon Aly and go on tour. Never the same after that. I saw their final Dallas show at Bronco Bowl. They were very good. Blue Rodeo opened and were so good that I’m still a fan.

Everlast with Ice-T and the Syndicate was my soundtrack back in 1990.  Imagine my surprise when he showed up with a bald head in House of Pain

Listening to a 1995 spotify playlist right now and there are a ton of one hit wonders, along with a lot of stalwarts.  Two quick ones.

Dishwalla - Counting Blue Cars - this may be the most "mid-90s" song ever

Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's - our boys from Denton

Oh, ETA: Rembrandts - the Friends theme song

I was a preteen that liked this song a lot. I think the guitarist was a teenager:

the frontman, daniel johns, was married to another ohw mentioned upthread natalie imbruglia.  and her single was a cover originally written and performed by the american band ednaswap

From the best Netflix series ever.

They def had more songs than just that one that got play

Wrong. I can actually envision singing along to Come on Eileen while shitfaced in some English pub.

Nobody ever sings along to Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the worst song with some of the most banal lyrics ever.

This song is worse (and a one hit wonder, so fits the thread as well):

Actually this song is worse.  But Breakfast at Tiffany's is the worst song in the history of the universe that got any decent level of radio play.

One Hit Wonder Counterpoint:

Breakfast at Tiffany's:

You'll say, "We've got nothing in common
No common ground to start from"
And we're falling apart
You'll say, "The world has come between us
Our lives have come between us"
Still I know you just don't care

And I said, "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"
She said, "I think I remember the film"
And as I recall I think we both kind of liked it
And I said, "Well that's the one thing we've got"

I see you, the only one who knew me
And now your eyes see through me
I guess I was wrong
So what now?
It's plain to see we're over
And I hate when things are over
When so much is left undone

And I said, "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"
She said, "I think I remember the film"
And as I recall I think we both kind of liked it
And I said, "Well that's the one thing we've got"

You'll say, "That we've got nothing in common
No common ground to start from"
And we're falling apart
You'll say, "The world has come between us
Our lives have come between us"
Still I know you just don't care

And I said, "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"
She said, "I think I remember the film"
And as I recall I think we both kind of liked it
And I said, "Well that's the one thing we've got"

Ooh and I said, "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"
She said, "I think I remember the film"
And as I recall I think we both kind of liked it
And I said, "Well that's the one thing we've got"

And I said, "What about Breakfast at Tiffany's?"
She said, "I think I remember the film"
And as I recall I think we both kind of liked it
And I said, "Well that's the one thing we've got"

Rico Suave:

Seguro que han do que yo soy educado
Soy un caballerito un chico bien portado
Un joven responsible why siempre bien vestido
Yo no se quien ha mentido

I don't drink or smoke ain't into dope
Won't try no coke, ask me how I do it, I cope
My only addiction has to do with the female species
I eat 'em raw like sushi

No me gustan ternos, mi estilo es moderno
Si me enterno, you me enfermo
Mi apariencia es dura, vivo en la locura
No me vengan con ternuras

So please don't judge a book by its cover
There's more to being a latin lover
You got to know how to deal with a woman
That won't let go
The price you pay for being a gigolo

There's not a woman that can handle
A man like me
That's why I juggle two or three
I ain't one to commit, you can omit that bit
You pop the question that's it
Haber uno, dos, tres, cuatro mujeres
why la situacion alla no muere
No es un delito calmo mi apetito
Con un llanto o un grito

So again don't let my lyrics mislead you
I don't love you but I need you
Would you rather have me lie
Take a piece of your pie and say bye
Or be honest and rub your thighs

Well, it's ten o'clock and I'm two hours late
I never said I was a prompt date
But you kept persisting that I meet your parents
Huh, they're going to love my appearance

Ding dong el timbre suena
Tu madre abre, que vieja mas buena
Le digo ¡Hola! Pero no para bola
Que se ha creido vieja chola

Go and serve the food mom
Que tengo ambre
If you don't hurry, me va a dar un calambre
why usted seor? Why's your chin on the floor?
Sierra la boca por favor

What's this amor, these little huevos?
Esto que yo no pruebo

I'm used to good ol' fashioned
Homestyle Spanish cooking
If i try that I'll be puking
Well it's been a pleasure but we got to go
Regresaremos temprano
Cinco, seis, o siete de la manana
Su hija esta en buenas manos

I don't know much Spanish, but I'm going to assume that Rico Suave's Spanish lyrics have a layer of depth and artistry completely lacking from Breakfast at Tiffany's.  And there's also a very good anti-drug message when Gerardo proclaims, "I don't drink or smoke ain't into dope. Won't try no coke, ask me how I do it, I cope."

Breakfast at Tiffany's is the worst.

Apropos of nothing:  the drummer for Deep Blue Something is the brother of a Longhorn message board legend who shall remain nameless.

And yes, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is remarkable in its banality.  Plain White T's fell way short of that level of incompetence with "Hey There Delilah".

Interdasting.  I think he also owns the building next door to my office in downtown Dallas (or at least he did for a while).

I hope he had nothing to do with the lyrics and threw up in his mouth every time he had to play that fucking song.

Fine Young Cannibals is a two-hit wonder.  Good Thing, on the same album, still gets some decent airplay today.  According to wiki, it went to No. 1 on the Billboard chart.

The only good thing about that song is it spawned this masterpiece

The drummer on the album or touring drummer?  I know the later, not the former.

This song ruled the clubs in the late 80's. Never heard from them again.
