Yeah, umm, the big picture for a kindergartner is trying not to get caught eating their boogers.

August 19Aug 19 I attended a graduation this year at a private school in Austin and noticed that the program listed two students who were attending this "university." Of my relatives who have graduated from this high school so far, both have gone to excellent colleges and are pretty normal kids. And while the small, religious-focused curriculum surely contributes to the decision to attend such a purported institute of higher learning and truthiness, I have to suspect that the parents of these kids have a ton of influence on their destination. Because the school seems perfectly capable of getting a lot of its students into good universities. Of course, as Ty Webb said, the world needs ditch diggers too, and, by that same token, no matter the school, some of the kids just aren't rocking it academically. Still, there are better colleges, and even the dimmest bulb at one of these expensive, private high schools can be leveraged into a decent, state school. Edited August 19Aug 19 by dcbc

And students defend it.

Amateur fight clubs are incredibly stupid and it’s also just play-acting at being a badass. The gulf between people who have had even a little training and those who haven’t is a chasm. I did some years of amateur boxing in junior high and high school and our dorm started one my freshman year (this was on the heels of the movie). I showed up, spent three fights (actually just a round each) lightly pummeling guys who had never worked a bag, and then never came back. It’s the same kind of “fun” a decent HS chess player would have playing against me, who has occasionally pulled out a board with friends— not fun at all. The risk to untrained people who can’t protect themselves is real and the “club” ultimately got stopped when a bad head injury happened. The thing is that most real state colleges all have MMA clubs, BJJ clubs, boxing clubs. You can go do it for real and find out exactly how badass you aren’t while actually learning something! No one is stopping you! Edited August 19Aug 19 by 956 Worldwide

I meant it appeals to a lot of the parents who send their kids to small, private, fundamentalist-Christian type schools, not specifically for the religious aspect alone, but for the anti-woke stance that so often comes with it. That's not to say that all parents who go that route with high school push that on their kids. That's not the case with my relatives, but it likely is for some. That could easily be the case in public school, but I don't know of anyone from our big, public school that wants to go someplace like this. Now, the parents may think it's great, but I haven't heard of anyone from around here headed that way. They probably are scared just based on the fact that it's in Austin.

I was really more adding on than trying to contradict. Seems like the Bob Joneses and Liberties of the world are quite a bit different and would appeal to different parents. Like, BJU parents probably wouldn't send their spawn to a den of iniquity like Austin, no matter what the school was like. But, I think it's highly likely that high-religiosity secondary schools are the only place you'd find kids and parents that desire this kind of environment.. Edited August 19Aug 19 by TwiceHorn

I would bet that a lot of those parents who have spent a bunch of money sending their Braydens and Caydens to right wing private schools are smart enough to recognize the extreme risk to future earnings potential as a result of sending their kids to an unaccredited experiment. If they can get accredited in a few years, then I could see it taking off with that crowd.

August 20Aug 20 Elaborating, I think there are those that are fundamentalist Christians first, and that dictates their politics. Then there are those that are political first and that dictates adoption of modern, American "Christian" values, which may or may not coincide with being a fundamentalist Christian. The difference may ultimately be subtle, and vanishing as a practical matter. But I think the first type are drawn to the BJUs and Liberties and other similarly overtly fundamentalist Christian schools, including Baylor (but we all know intimately how hypocritical Baylor is in that regard). The second type, and some pretty secular but highly political types are going to be drawn to this joint.

Notable that UATX and all these schools drone on about the canon and engaging with history’s great minds that have eternal relevance. And then this kid says that the most influential book he can think of is some American culture war slop. Embarrassing. And I’m not against the canon; I have some regrets at not attending St. John’s in New Mexico.
