When you buy grass sod it comes with about an inch to an inch and a half of soil attached to the bottom of the sod. When you drive past a sod farm after harvest you see where these strips have been cut out. My question is, how is this top soil replaced? By theory after 6 or 8 cuttings the field would be around a foot lower than the surrounding area, yet it’s not. I’ve never seen giant earth moving equipment replenishing the dirt so new grass can be sewn, but the fields remain level. So where does the new top soil come from? there are deep cuts and shallow cuts. in the latter, they basically don't shave topsoil off. it's all organic matter. quick growth of the grass starting with left-behind root structure/runners, lots of fertilizer, lime means constant regrowth so there is plenty of new organic material to decompose and make new soil to replace what little is lost. constant cover means that wind doesn't get to erode it either. for stuff with deep cuts, they have the exact problem you are saying. you can't keep regrowing there. it's for projects when you need to bring in the soil because you are planting on something that sucks. but you're strip mining the farm.

October 4Oct 4 Maybe not the dumbest question ever, but not worth a new thread. My district - Garland ISD - televises most games on YouTube. As it gets close to half, there is a message stating that the halftime show (band) cannot be shown due to US copyright laws. I don't understand this. I know the band has to purchase its music legally. I also recall that some college football halftime shows are shown on alternate channels. What gives?
October 5Oct 5 Which was more traumatizing, Pearl Harbor (1941) or Pearl Harbor (2001)?John Makovic Electric Boogaloo 2 (2025)
October 19Oct 19 I was looking at Kentucky’s stadium on Google Maps, what in the fuck is this road set up?

Just a guess, but I think prolly some difference between payment for live performance versus broadcast.
October 19Oct 19 Again, just a guess - but I would think the school district doesn't want the risk of getting sued for copyright infringement, even if they happen to not be infringing on any copyright laws. Cheaper to avoid the potential of getting sued?
November 10Nov 10 Battery pack question... I have a battery pack that holds 12 AA alkaline batteries (in series) that are all testing between 1.28 - 1.31V. However, when I test the pack, I am getting 8.08V. I am sure there is some resistance, but to drop the average to .67V / battery seems excessive. Am I calculating this wrong?

I know the band has to purchase its music legally. I also recall that some college football halftime shows are shown on alternate channels. What gives? There are few copyright laws in place here. But it basically boils down to : when the marching band director purchases the sheet music, by extension, he's buying the "right" to also perform that music. Usually the place they're performing at has a performance license with either ASCAP or BMI. Your bar that have cover bands are (supposed) to have them as well. And somewhere down the line, the composer gets a royalty. However, they did not buy the synchronization rights. That's the right to have your video matching the composition. And for that you have to get approval from from the Sync Copyright holder. Usually, its whoever wrote the song, but could be the record label. But it's a much bigger process. It's the same law that keeps someone from just putting like a led zeppelin song on you tube without getting permission from Led Zeppelin. It's much more restrictive Or why you sometime here about musicians complaining that a politician is using their song in ad.

November 11Nov 11 I don't expect anyone here to have any more insight on the topic than I do, but I am continually bewildered whenever I see someone has etched some kind of nickname into the mirror, fixtures, etc., of a public restroom. I understand graffiti, and I understand tagging, but what's the point of scratching your name, initials, nickname, gang name, etc. in a random public bathroom? Even accepting the statistical unlikelihood of someone reading your scratches and recognizing your name, what's the fucking point? "Oh, awesome, Morbo82 pissed here once too!" or "the 21st Street Crips really get around - a member of theirs has pissed at this airport. They must control Terminal 3." Just baffling.

November 14Nov 14 how have companies like Lime not been sued to Bolivia given the litigious nature of America, the obvious risks associated with electric scooters in high traffic areas and propensity of juries to award astronomical judgements against "evil corporations"?

They (the band/ISD) have some kind of public performance license that extends to typical high school football venues, but not to broadcasts, most likely. Also, the broadcaster needs its own license to broadcast copyright content. ASCAP/BMI have/grant licenses tailored to incredibly specific situations. They leave little or no money on the table.
