Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar ’93 was confirmed Friday as the next chancellor of The Texas A&M University System by a unanimous vote of the Board of Regents.

“I am grateful and honored that the Board of Regents have entrusted me with the responsibility of leading one of the greatest university systems in the nation,” Hegar said. “Our Core Values unite us and set the Texas A&M System apart from the others, and I remain steadfastly committed to upholding and preserving those values.”

@closetojumping what's the word on this guy?

My first thought is they hope he’s their Eltife: Alum and well respected former legislator. And both are low key as far as politicians go.

He’s not going to burn as hot as Sharp and will be more likely to hire good people and get out of their way.  And I don’t think Hegar will sacrifice everything at the altar of athletics, which may be his undoing.

I had the extreme misfortune of attending graduation at aggy a few weeks ago. Not an experience I hope I ever repeat.

It was notable for a couple of things. First, predictably, was the number of nimrods who, upon walking the stage and having their (symbolic) diploma handed, looked into the camera onstage and did the Horns down. I mean, really? Talk about living rent free.

Second, and more remarkably, were the speakers. I've been to graduations at many different universities over the years and the speeches tend to be related to a number of common and relevant topics: do good, lifelong learning, follow your passion, pay it forward, etc., etc. At this graduation we heard from the Chairman of the BOR, the university chancellor, the university president, college dean, faculty representative, student representative and president of the alumni association. In all their messages there was one common theme that, collectively, took up about 90% (generously lowballing there, if anything) of their time: How cool it is to be an aggie.

Not joking or exaggerating, even a little.

It was shocking just how inside-focused the whole thing was. Very, very little mention of anything relating to impact on the outside world.

Yes, one speaker did invoke the "From the outside you can't understand it..." trope.

They are a cult. Pure and simple and wholly undeniable.

And, of course, the whole thing ended with them singing their ode to The University of Texas and locking arms to sway back and forth. I was honored and amused.

Seems an appropriate place for this recent gem that is destined to be a classic

"The Perfect Storm" when Texas failed to win the Football, Men's Basketball(and Women's Tourney), and Softball Conference titles.

What happens when they do?

It would make an interesting game show.  Show pictures and ask the contestants, "Soviet Bloc or College Station?"

I saw this earlier and it made me laugh. But in all fairness I am glad that I went to UT when I did as it is doubtful that I could get in with today’s standards. I was a Top 10%er and not a Top 5%er.

I know that is not the spirit of this post but it is a reality.

While my original numbers wouldn't get me in to UT by today's standards, had they been the standards back when I was in high school, I would've just upped my game. No biggie.

Lot of folks are discussing how Mike Leach is now eligible for the College Football Hall of Fame because the win % requirement has been lowered to 59.5%, but that also means former Texas A&M HC Jackie Sherrill will now be eligible, too. He had a 179-121-4 career record (.595).

Leach was 9-4 vs aggy (69%) so I say he should be in. Sherrill was one of the most crooked pieces of shit to ever stroll a sideline- he doesn't deserve shit.

A lot of highly intelligent people will do and say some crazy shit to get people to underestimate them, then they would figure out a way to use that to their advantage.  Les Miles was not one of those people.

Read in more detail here about Sherrill’s blatant cheating in this Barking Carnival article. And reference it the next time one of those ignorant goobers runs his mouth about the “evil” tu wrecking the SWC.

Top 10 here, so I would still be solid.

So, I've got that going for me, which is nice.

When I got to UT in 1988 the undergrad enrollment was around 50k with a state population of around 16M. The current state population is around 32M and this fall the undergrad enrollment will be around 50k. Combine the lack of enrollment keeping pace with population growth with the fact that kids from places like fucking Muleshoe and Rosebud Lott are getting auto admitted, you are seeing a brain drain from the state. I think top 10% should get you into the System. The Flagship should take the best and brightest

I got busted with weed my freshman year of high school so I'm pretty sure that second semester in ISS is what kept me out of the top 25%. Luckily I got provisional admittance and graduated in 9 years.

Not only undergrad at UT, but grad school and postdoc as well. Students and postdocs I admit to my program now are waaaaay more qualified than I was back when I was in their shoes.
