Not really these days, but getting fired as Chancellor of Mizzou for creating a “toxic environment through threat, fear and intimidation," while mishandling campus racism events and implementing right-wing policies.

Texas A&M had another swing and miss on the recruiting front yesterday as five-star edge defender Tank Jones ended up committing to Oregon over A&M and Alabama. The Aggies were considered to have been in the driver's seat for the last little bit of the recruitment, but the Ducks came in strong at the end to steal Jones away.

This bears an eerie resemblance to the way things happened with Lamar Brown less than one month ago. After Brown's official visit to College Station, the optimism was flowing, and Aggie fans were convinced they'd be bringing in the five-star defensive tackle. However, Brown committed to LSU, leaving A&M fans high and dry.

This isn't to discount the many recruiting wins that the Aggies have had over the past month or so— pulling in Bryce Perry-Wright, Brandon Arrington, Tristian Givens, KJ Edwards, and others have been massive wins. But when you go from dreams of the top overall class to trying to figure out what's next, it's a big time disappointment.

Where does Texas A&M football turn after missing on Lamar Brown and Tank Jones?
There are a few things to keep in mind here. First of all, even though the Aggies missed on these two prospects, they still have a top-3 class in the nation— and that's not an empty number by any means. They have addressed needs quite well in this class, and if they simply sign the guys they currently have committed, it will be a real testament to Elko and this staff's recruiting ability.

Secondly, the Aggies aren't going anywhere in any of these recruitment. NIL makes things tougher nowadays, but Texas A&M showed last cycle that they can stay in these big time recruitments and end up flipping players in the end. They did as much with both Lamont Rogers (a five-star, for what it's worth) and Jamarion Morrow in last class alone.

So nothing is over until it's over, even if things seem pretty bad right now. The Aggies will have a chance to sort things out on the field against LSU, obviously, though that will be a tough win to get.

Lamar Brown, Tristen Keys, Ethan "Boobie" Feaster, and Tank Jones are all players that the Ags will stay on until pen meets paper. If Texas A&M has the season that we're expecting as fans, their chances of a flip will go way up.

Texas A&M football is looking to have a breakout season under Mike Elko in his second year down in College Station. The Aggies finished a disappointing 8-5 in 2024 after slipping down the stretch of the season, losing games to South Carolina, Auburn, Texas, and USC.

However, the Aggies had a real shot in all of those games— yes, even South Carolina, which was a contest that was tied at halftime and spiraled late when A&M lost control. It was precisely because the Ags were so close that things were so frustrating for A&M fans; the quadruple-overtime game against Auburn, the definition of a result on the razor's edge, was the pinnacle of that frustration.

[BV editorial note: Oh sure, the loss to Auburn was the pinnacle of aggy's frustration.  Nothing happened in the weeks after that game that frustrated aggy more.]

But as we move into the 2025 season, it's time to finally stop looking backward, and look forward to what is coming up for the Aggies. Of course, the irony is that, sometimes, you have to look backwards to know what's coming up— and in that vein, there is an interesting blueprint from the past that can inform how things look going forward.

Texas A&M can look to beginning of Georgia, Kirby Smart dynasty to see roadmap for 2025
So why am I picking Georgia here? It's not just because they're one of the hottest names and best programs over the last near-decade, but because of some specific similarities that jump out between the Bulldogs in their breakout season and Mike Elko's squad— and it goes beyond the defensive-minded head coach in his second year.

In Kirby Smart's first season at Georgia, a place that had had some great seasons but never really achieved their potential under Mark Richt, the Bulldogs went... 8-5, including a home loss in a rivalry game. In all honesty, it was a worse season than Elko and the Aggies just had, given that the Bulldogs got smoked by Ole Miss, lost to Vandy, and fell to Georgia Tech at home.

They entered the following season with middling expectations. They were ranked no. 15 in the preseason AP Poll, and advanced metrics like SP+ (then called S&P+), had them just outside the top 20 in their first ratings.

Of course, the preseason AP Poll has yet to drop, but the Aggies could well swap these two numbers: I expect them to land in the high teens or low twenties in the poll, and SP+ sees the Aggies as a top-15 team for the season. A similar profile indeed— not to mention the Bulldogs were facing a big question mark at quarterback.

But the similarities don't end there, of course. The Bulldogs opened with a game against a upper-tier G5 team in Appalachian State— much like A&M begins with UTSA, who will be no slouch when it comes to that level of team— before an early-season matchup... at Notre Dame.

The Bulldogs emerged from South Bend after defeating the Irish 20-19. The closest of calls, but they came out with a win— one that sprung them forward with dizzying speed and momentum. They began to trounce opponents— Mississippi State, Tennessee, Missouri, Florida— going undefeated for the first two-thirds of the season.

If the Aggies can beat Notre Dame, it's not hard to see something similar happening. Auburn and Florida at home are the biggest tests during that time, but if the Aggies can defend Kyle Field the same way they did last year, they should emerge unscathed from those games— perhaps even with similarly emphatic wins, if they have this kind of momentum.

Eerie similarities mark 2025 Texas A&M Aggies and 2017 Georgia Bulldogs
It was a November matchup on the road in the SEC against their second-biggest rival where the Bulldogs tripped up— and they did so big time. The Auburn Tigers destroyed Georgia, 40-17, in Jordan-Hare two weeks before they would similarly run roughshod over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Of course, looking at A&M's schedule, you see the comparison. A November matchup on the road in the SEC against their second-biggest rival— also named the Tigers, for whatever that's worth— when A&M heads to LSU.

Georgia went undefeated the rest of the way in the regular season, vanquishing Georgia Tech on the road, before avenging themselves against Auburn in the SEC Championship (thanks in no small part to Kerryon Johnson's injury). It wasn't until the overtime game against Alabama in the national championship, when Tua threw to Devonta Smith on 2nd and 26, that the Bulldogs lost another game.

If Texas A&M follows this path, losing in the national championship, I think most Aggie fans would take it. Conference champions and making it all the way to the final game? Better than what most expect of the Aggies this year.

But there are some discontinuities, too. For one, the Aggies have a lot of their road games mashed together at the end of the year (but Georgia only had 6 home games, all told, in 2017, for whatever that's worth). It should also be said that A&M's slate is significantly tougher this year than UGA's was in 2017.

But the similarities here are hard to deny. Though we're all tempering our expectations at the moment, it was in a very similar state that the UGA fans found themselves before the 2017 breakout. Can the Aggies replicate it? We'll just have to see.

Why stop there?

Title: "Gridiron Echoes: How Texas A&M Football Mirrors the Patriots Dynasty"

By [Your Name]
August 2, 2025

When college football meets the NFL in philosophical execution, structure, and relentless pursuit of dominance, you get a unique hybrid that draws attention. Texas A&M football is crafting a blueprint that strikingly mirrors the NFL’s most celebrated dynasty—the New England Patriots. While the stages are different—Saturday stadiums brimming with tradition versus the cold, calculating Sundays of Foxborough—their trajectories, culture, and methodologies are starting to align in unmistakable ways.

1. Culture of Discipline and Accountability

At the heart of the Patriots’ two-decade reign was a culture forged by Bill Belichick—no-nonsense, team-first, and built on discipline. Texas A&M’s current leadership has begun instilling a similar ethos. Since the overhaul of the coaching staff in 2024, Aggieland has seen a shift in mindset: attention to detail, film study obsession, and a “do your job” mentality reminiscent of Foxborough’s heyday.

Players and coaches alike now speak in measured, focused tones, echoing the Patriots’ stoic professionalism. Buzzwords like “execution,” “situational awareness,” and “mental toughness” dominate press conferences. It's not flashy—it’s effective.

2. Versatility Over Flash

The Patriots dynasty thrived on adaptability. One week they’d run the ball 40 times, the next they’d torch you with short-passing precision. Texas A&M’s offense under new OC Marcus Lewis has adopted that same week-to-week morphing identity. Whether deploying a power run game behind a mauling O-line or spreading the field with quick reads and mismatches, the Aggies don’t chase a style—they chase victories.

Defensively, it’s the same story. Like Belichick’s defenses, A&M prioritizes situational mastery and scheme diversity. Their hybrid fronts and pre-snap disguises have flustered even elite SEC quarterbacks, much like the Patriots flummoxed MVPs in the NFL.

3. “Next Man Up” Mentality

Injuries never derailed the Patriots—because preparation was universal. Texas A&M’s 2025 season has tested their depth early, yet the response has been classic Patriot: plug-and-play. From three-star freshmen stepping into starting roles to walk-ons making pivotal special teams plays, the Aggies are developing a roster-wide readiness that belies their youth.

The message is clear: talent matters, but preparation trumps all. Much like Belichick could win with undrafted rookies and journeymen, A&M’s ability to maximize overlooked players is redefining their depth chart.

4. Recruiting Like the Draft—With a Purpose

Rather than chasing stars blindly, A&M is now recruiting like an NFL team drafts: with intent. Fit, versatility, coachability—these traits are prioritized over rankings. The Aggies are finding their “Julian Edelmans” and “Mike Vrabels” in the high school ranks—players who may not be five-star phenoms but become invaluable system pieces.

It’s a strategic model that builds cohesion over time. Rather than stockpile talent with overlapping skill sets, A&M is building a complementary roster—each piece serving a distinct role, just as the Patriots built balanced, situationally dominant squads.

5. The Rise of a System Over Star Power

The Patriots dynasty was never about one player—even Tom Brady worked within the system. At A&M, the current resurgence isn’t driven by Heisman hype or NIL headlines—it’s the system itself that’s winning games. Quarterbacks aren’t asked to be superheroes; defensive stars are rotated and kept fresh; special teams is treated as a strategic weapon.

Texas A&M’s brand of football may not be TikTok-worthy, but it's starting to yield the most important result: wins.

The Takeaway: The Dynasty Blueprint, Reimagined in College Station

While comparing a college program to a six-time Super Bowl-winning NFL franchise may seem like a stretch, the philosophical throughlines are undeniable. Texas A&M is not trying to become a college version of the Patriots—they’re evolving into something of their own, drawing lessons from one of football’s most dominant blueprints.

If this trajectory continues, the Aggies won’t just be an SEC contender—they’ll be a model of sustained excellence, a modern-day dynasty in the making. And somewhere in Foxborough, you can imagine Belichick cracking a rare smile—just a little one.

🚨ARREST UPDATE: More details re:  Dalton Brooks, a football player for Texas A&M University, and his hit-and-run arrest by College Station police.

The incident happened on the night of Wednesday, June 25. Police say Brooks was driving a U-Haul box truck and collided with another vehicle in the intersection of Harvey Road at Highway 6.

The report says Brooks told police he briefly stopped after the crash, looked in the mirror, saw the driver of the other vehicle wasn't seriously hurt, and then "proceeded to panic" and drove away.

Witnesses followed Brooks and called 911, and stayed behind the U-Haul until police arrived and stopped it. Brooks said he was trying to return the U-Haul to the business.

The report says there was significant damage to the U-Haul truck, including the driver's side headlight removed and hanging by wires and the bumper was dented, and both the front driver and passener airbag was deployed.

The car he allegedly hit also had significant damage. The vehicle was declared a total loss with the cost being $19,191, said the report.

Police said nearby cameras captured the crash on camera, and it shows Brooks leaving the scene of the wreck after it happened.

Brooks is expected to be a key contributor in the Aggies' secondary this season after playing in all 13 games while making eight starts as a sophomore in 2024, finishing second on the team with 59 tackles and ranking in the top five with 5.5 tackles for loss. He posted a career-high 10 tackles in the regular-season finale against Texas and recorded at least five stops in six different games. Brooks also had one interception.

Rewatched the aggy game today on SEC network for the first time. Overall feeling of frustration that it wasn't 31-0 or so. The pick 6 and the fumble, that shit just can't happen.  Play Arch more, they shit their pants and called a timeout the second time he came in, then Quinn is back after the timeout. Not 1, not 2, but 3 OL downfield and no call on that pass to the tight end to set up our final goal line stand was infuriating. Three blatant faked injuries in second half to stall momentum were as well.

Plenty of aggy stupidity to laugh at too though...not even pretending to rush our punt with under 2 minutes left after blocking the previous one is something I'll never understand. Goal line playcalling was pathetic.  Crowd shots of gomers doing Horns down like they just invented it.
