Texas A&M football has come in at the 19th spot in the initial AP Poll of the season, showing just how long of a road they have before they can get the kind of belief they deserve. The Aggies have a really solid team for the upcoming year, not to mention one of the most experienced in the nation, and under Mike Elko's tutelage, this will no doubt be an impressive, if not elite, squad.

The pollsters have yet to see that, of course, which is why they have the Aggies so low— far lower than most computer rankings have them. Of course, Texas A&M is still even being shortchanged some by those computer rankings, which are dinging them for the lack of returning production at the QB spot since Conner Weigman left, but given Reed's improvement down the stretch of the year, this is really not a worry for fans.

There are also plenty of interesting placements for the Aggies' rivals and upcoming foes. We already knew the Ags had some really tough road games ahead of them this year, but this just highlights how difficult of a slate this is.

Texas A&M's AP ranking is a snub, but fans shouldn't be worried
Preseason polls can shape perception far too much, of course, but the Aggie faithful know that A&M will have plenty of opportunities to show their quality. It took a while for the inertia to begin to wear off for the Aggies in the polls last year; after the loss to Notre Dame, A&M eventually rose to 7-1 and undefeated in the SEC, but only got to 10th in the polls somehow.

But if they can vanquish the Irish in South Bend this year, they have a shot to enter November undefeated. Therein, they'll have three straight road games against conference opponents, including LSU. That's a recipe for a rocky road late in the season, but if this A&M team really is one that can compete for a championship, they'll weather the storm.

Predictable snub?  Seems like the preseason polls have been pretty fucking overly friendly to the ags in recent years.

Sumlin got way more than 10 million. And I'm not sure if it was offset language or lack thereof. It might have just been the fact that the contract had the total buyout due 60 days after termination. So Sumlin got one big check and then got to do whatever the fuck he wanted. Which was bleed Arizona.

Also, I was curious. Sumlin is now the OC/TE coach at Maryland.

If you look at the just-released AP Poll, Texas A&M has an extremely grueling road ahead of them in 2025— both in and out of conference play. The Aggies come in at 19th in the poll, which was a predictable snub, but you look at some of the teams ahead of them, and you really have to wonder what the pollsters were thinking.

Texas A&M is one spot behind... Oklahoma. The same OU that finished 6-7 last year and looked aimless outside of a shocking upset victory over Alabama at home— one which did not reflect at all their quality of play for most of the year.

Aggie fans were worried about what seemed like a relatively unexciting home slate for the upcoming year, but if you go by this poll, the Ags may be home underdogs in two games: against Florida (15th) and South Carolina (13th). I was as high on LaNorris Sellers and Dylan Stewart last offseason as anyone, and I still think they're both monster talents, but there are simply far too many question marks with the Gamecocks for them to be higher than the Aggies.

Texas A&M's placement in preseason AP Poll was predictable, but head-scratching rankings remain
Let's just do a quick comparison of where each of these teams rank in some advanced metrics. Per Bill Connelly's SP+, Texas A&M ranks 15th, ahead of Oklahoma and South Carolina, while just barely behind Florida (14th, but only 0.1 quality points ahead of the Aggies).

Per Kelley Ford, the Aggies are 10th, well ahead of Florida (15th), OU (16th), and Carolina (18th). Per FEI ratings, the Aggies again are tops in this group of four teams: A&M is 13th, OU is 16th, Florida is 20th, and South Carolina is 24th.

So in two of the three, the Aggies are leading the pack by a good margin, and in the only one they're not, they're about as close as you can get. Averaging these rankings has A&M at 12.7, OU at 16, Florida at 16.3, and Carolina at 19.6. So on average, the Aggies are about three spots better than the next-closest team here: Oklahoma.

Of course, the poll is not and never has been a pure power ranking. Resume (or, in this case, predicted resume) plays into it at some point. I think the star power at QB for these three other teams and the media sleeping on Reed has a lot to do with things here. But even so, this is a pretty shocking ranking for these teams.

Texas A&M football is way lower in the preseason AP Poll than, by rights, they should be. The Aggies have the depth, talent, and experience to really threaten for some huge results in the 2025 season, and even if the pollsters haven't cottoned onto that yet, the computers are showing just how prodigious the Aggies' chances are.

There will be more analysis to come about where the Aggies are, of course, but looking around at some of the other rankings ahead of the season, there are quite a few points of interest for Texas A&M fans. Those points of interest, as always, are found by checking in on where the rivals rank.

The elephant in the room is the preseason number one ranking for Texas, buoyed by the bevy of offseason Arch Manning hype pieces. Then, you have the Aggies' other major opponent, the LSU Tigers, up at number nine. Both of these, however, set up A&M fans for some delicious rival tears in the upcoming year.

Preseason AP Poll sets Aggies' rivals up for hilarious failure, while A&M has chance to rise considerably
I'll start off by saying that I think LSU actually has a pretty good chance to do well for themselves this year, and I think that they are by far the toughest game on the Aggies' schedule for 2025. However, this just sets up way too perfectly for a Bayou Bengal opening loss— for the third year in a row.

The Tigers have to venture to Clemson, South Carolina for a showdown with Dabo Swinney's squad in a night game on week one. That's a recipe for disaster, as Kelly has had better LSU teams lose to worse opponents in openers in his time in Baton Rouge.

They will no doubt end up still being a solid contender, but this sets them up to stumble at the first hurdle, sending the state of Louisiana into conniptions. Kelly's time is limited in Baton Rouge, as he simply isn't a great fit there, and this will hasten the already-circulating discontent.

Then, you have the Longhorns, who achieved their ranking simply due to clout. Both SP+ and FEI ratings have Texas outside the top 4, and, incidentally, their week-one opponent, Ohio State, tops both of those rankings.

Starting Arch Manning and a very green pair of lines in the Horseshoe in week one is a recipe for complete disaster in Austin. Combine that with a trip to the Swamp as well as Athens on the conference slate, and a late-season showdown with the Aggies— not to mention the feared back-to-back SEC road trip (even if it is against Mississippi State and Kentucky)— and the Longhorns could be staring down the barrel of 8-4.

This could be an unparalleled season for schadenfreude for Aggie fans. It's time to sit back and watch the chaos begin.

On November 30, 2013, Sumlin agreed to a new six-year contract as head coach at Texas A&M. The contract, valued at $30 million over six years, was guaranteed. If Texas A&M had fired him after the 2015 and 2016 seasons, the buyout amounts ($20 million and $15 million, respectively) would have had to be paid out within 60 days of termination.[17]

On November 21, 2017, news outlets reported that Sumlin would be fired following the 2017 season finale against LSU.[18] On November 26, 2017, Sumlin was fired after six seasons. He compiled a 51–26 record during his tenure. Despite never posting a losing record as the coach of A&M, he only won more than nine games once, and only had one winning record in SEC play. Sumlin received a $10.4 million buyout under the terms of his contract, and was replaced by Jimbo Fisher for the 2018 season.[19]

Aggy predictions for their season; most are surprising realistic.

This one is awesome, though:

Not sure why people repeat the 8-4 meme:

2024 8-5
2023 7-6
2022 5-7
2021 8-4
2020 9-1
2019 8-5
2018 9-4
2017 7-6
2016 8-5

I understand the meme refers to the "regular season" but for more punch just talk about the conference record instead or perhaps just the overall November record.

By comparison, Elko's Duke record fit those trends from Jimbo and Sumlin perfectly, btw…as did his first season here…

They actually average less than 8 wins over the past decade. We were coming out of our worst decade in school history and still managed more wins per season than they did, despite playing 9 less FCS teams (we played none).
