What "new" offense? Did they secretly fire Klein and bring in someone... better? Am I missing something? Do aggies just not even follow their own team?

Edit: I see now that they were clowning the aggies. In my defense, it's pretty hard to separate satire from actual aggy beliefs

Texas A&M fans should know well at this point that there's a good reason they refer to the offseason as "silly season"— and even by those standards, we've reached a low point.

You'd think such a nadir would occur much closer to the midpoint of the time without college football, when the wait is longest until there's actual games being played. However, for Aggie fans, the peak of silly season has apparently come here with less than ten days to go before toe meets leather for Texas A&M against the UTSA Roadrunners.

What is this peak of silly season, you ask? Simple enough: the pattern that has so recently developed of hot take artists looking to fire off opinions who have apparently decided that the Aggies' chances against those aforementioned Roadrunners are what should be next in their sights. We've already covered one guy mentioning it on X, which A&M fans roundly scorned, but now it's spread to other places. It's time it get stomped out.

No, Texas A&M's game against UTSA is not "primed" for App State repeat, and here's why
Tom Williams, writing for Mike Farrell Sports, opines that the Aggies are "primed" for being upset against the UTSA Roadrunners. This is very obviously silly, but let's break down exactly why that's the case for the uninitiated.

First of all, painful as it may be for the Aggie fans reading here, we need to go over just why the Aggies failed to get a win against the Mountaineers in 2022. There are several reasons, some in-game and some off-the field, but a quick survey should do.

The most obvious change is that the coaching staff has entirely turned over since that point, as has the culture. Things had gone downhill in the locker room under Jimbo, as has been well-covered, and that's no longer the case under Mike Elko— the program has turned over a new leaf.

What is less well-analyzed is the anatomy of that exact upset. App State held the ball for 40 minutes of game time, picking up roughly 3.5 yards per carry on a shocking 52 attempts. That is an extreme outlier for success running the ball!

The other extreme outlier is that the Mountaineers ran 82 plays to the Aggies' 38. Part of that had to do with the fact that Devon Achane returned a kickoff for a touchdown in the game, giving the ball right back to App, but that's still a really surprising disparity.

Then, you have the turnovers. The Aggies were subject to a nearly 25% havoc rate up front by the App State defense, thanks to an extremely green and poorly-coached offensive line, and accordingly turned the ball over twice— not to mention they had at least one that they should have procured for themselves get overturned thanks to a penalty.

In other words, it was the perfect storm— one that heralded the then-still-long-off end of the Fisher era. But are the ingredients there for such an upset again?

Well, UTSA has a very senior offense, but other than that, this game bears very little resemblance. For one thing, Elko wasn't present in any capacity for the previous upset, which matters quite a bit here, to my mind.

The two biggest factors here were the Aggies' inability to hold onto the ball for any extended stretch and their inability to stop App State's drives. With an extremely experienced offensive line— two of which were playing in their second year in that very App State game, if that gives you any perspective for how long they've been in the program— that seems like far less of a pressing issue.

There's some question about A&M's ability to stop the run with the turnover along the defensive interior and some less-than-ideal safety play in the rush game last year, but under Elko— as this defense now is as of this year— the Aggies were always very gap-sound in their assignments.

So could UTSA go over the Aggies' heads over and over during this game? There's little you can do to stop a perfectly-placed ball, but I don't think the Roadrunners have the athletes to run the 2019 LSU offense against A&M all evening.

In short, there's no real parallel between these two games. The Aggie program is in a far different place than they were beforehand, and this UTSA team, while experienced offensively, does not stand a chance to beat them in the way that App State d

This is the worst "i never thought this would happen to me" story ever, but I had a disagreement at a hotel bar last night with a Gator aged about 35-40 and an Aggie about 30ish. Can't say it was an argument because I didn't let it get that far.

2 dudes sitting next to me at the bar were talking about Arch. One guy saying he's really good, and another saying he's not any good. I weigh in that if nothing else he is way more athletic than Quinn and I think that will help because much of the OL last year got drafted. Just trying to keep it high level.

We exchange pleasantries, and 1 guy is a Florida alum (guy singing Arch praises) and one is Aggy (Arch sucks). About 3 minutes later these dudes have shifted the conversation to the SEC has negotiated a 9 game schedule. I say "9 game conference schedule, and I don't think that is finalized". Aggy and Gator are quite sure it's 9 games total, and they start googling. I'm laughing, and Gator asks me "why are you so sure you're right?".  I answer "I'm not really sure how to respond. I follow college football. They aren't shrinking the season from 12 regular season games to 9. Too much money at stake."

It went back and forth from there with the Aggy reading me an article that was clearly talking about conference games, but they both interpreted as total games. I laughed as they told me I was clearly wrong, and I told them "Cool. Enjoy the reduction in football revenue while everyone else makes more money."

They got up and left, and the last thing I hear is "go gata!".

Fucking idiots.

Sherman was not surprising at all.  aggy was in the Big XII, Sherman had been the aggy OC coach during its glory days of 89-93, and was an NFL corch leading the Packers to three consecutive division titles.  Oh, and that one time he got all tough with Warren Sapp after a game even though Sapp could've snapped his neck with little effort.  He was born to be an aggy coach.

Yes, angry Texas fans, this is indeed real.

Kelley Ford of KFordRatings, one of the most well-known compilers of advanced statistical profiles on the internet, is always thinking up interesting new ways to look at the stats his system yields. No statistical profile is perfect, of course, but one of the things that sets Ford apart is the level of detail and innovation he puts into some of these numbers.

Accordingly, he has begun to put together "watchability scores" for any given game on the calendar. The ingredients to those scores are the projected quality of the teams involved as well as the competitiveness of the matchup— a pretty straightforward mix of factors.

Ford will release these watchability scores each week to show what the best game is in given time slots— pretty handy to consult, really! But, today, he dropped the top-30 teams in average watchability score— and the Aggies came in as a top-5 team in the rankings, while one other team in particular... did not.

Statistics show Texas A&M to be more watchable team than Longhorns in 2025
If these numbers are any guide, there will be more people tuning in to catch the Aggies' games than there will be for those down in Austin:

The interesting thing here is that Texas is projected as the top team in Ford's rankings— so if Arch doesn't turn out to be what some of the pundits surrounding the program have projected (and at this point, let's face it— how could he?), then their watchability score will only decrease as their team quality does.

Of course, the opposite is true for the Aggies, who are by all accounts pretty underrated at this point (though Ford's model has them as a team that could well be in playoff discussion by the time the end of the season rolls around). They have a definite upward trend line here.

Some Texas fans, I'm sure, would want to argue that this low watchability score is due more to their opponents not being as good— which, of course, would mean that they have a much softer schedule. Maybe you're cutting your nose off to spite your face, there.

In reality, these are two top-ten teams that should have plenty of eyes on them throughout the year, both with big time road matchups over the course of the season. These numbers will look different by the end of the season, of course, even if the relative positions don't change— but this is a pretty interesting tidbit, nonetheless.

When it comes to advanced statistics, I think Mark Twain said it best: "There are liars, damned liars, and that little Graham Harmon cocksucker."

That's a fair description ... for critical-thinking-challenged Aggies who buy the implicit argument that there are only two factors involved in "watchability" -- how competitive you are and how likely your opponents are to make it a close game. Then Ags can conveniently ignore factors that also make a team inherently watchable, like All-American players and trophy candidates, being in the playoff picture, or being the blueblood that everyone loves to either hate or love. Good-looking cheerleaders. A fine band. A better setting. History.

In a two-factor formula, everyone's local high school will have at least a couple more games that are more "watchable" than, for instance, Texas 8-4's annual November FCS matchup. Except in years when aggy manages to suddenly find itself in a highly watchable fourth-quarter upset.

Bluebloods who consistently play head and shoulders above the lesser teams on their schedule will inherently have a couple more games on average that are less watchable than many games on an also-ran's schedule.

Oh, but look who has three of the top five most watchable games of the season ... and who has a game that falls all the way to 61 on the scale because its opponent isn't as competitive ...
