The off-field recruiting stars of the 2022 cycle

Quote

One of the nation’s top football programs recently told 247Sports they had a position open in their office, with a focus on recruiting and relationship building.  “David Cooper, (Bryan) Carrington,” the source highlighted in explaining what they were looking for.

Cooper and Carrington’s work has been well documented at 247Sports over the years, two members of the 247Sports 30 under 30 list at various points in their career. And both were factors again this year on the trail, with Cooper particularly helping Georgia close the 247Sports Composite’s No. 3 recruiting class, instrumental in the recruitment of several players on the defensive side of the ball including his long-standing relationship with Top247 defensive lineman Christen Miller.

Carrington and Cooper always do good work. Sam Petitto at Alabama is a wealth of information for the Crimson Tide’s top targets. Mark Pantoni again directed Ohio State’s efforts to another top five class. Gavin Morris was part of helping lure five-star cornerback Domani Jackson back to USC, while several others began making a name for themselves in this profession as major talent acquisition guys in the game.

Let’s take a look at some of the other key off-field guys and gals that impacted the Top10 classes in the 2022 cycle from a straight recruiting standpoint.

The Texas A&M Trio

The efforts in securing this Aggies historic class that ranks No. 1 all-time in the 247Sports era certainly starts at the top with Jimbo Fisher and a terrific blend of assistant coaches including 247Sports National Recruiter of the Year Elijah Robinson. But the program gets a lot of support from their off-field personnel as well.

Bryant Gross-Armiento, a former Wake Forest defensive back from South Florida was pivotal in helping Texas A&M beat Miami for five-star defensive line Shemar Stewart, beat LSU for Top247 safety Jacoby Mathews and flipping Top247 cornerback Marquis Groves-Killebrew from Georgia.

“He was honest,” Stewart’s coach Moe Marquez said. “He was personable. He seems to care for Shemar just as much as a person as he did a player. He didn’t promise anything. He kept it honest even if he knew we wouldn’t like the response.”

Nick Williams was key in the past at Georgia in helping recruit Kelee Ringo and Lewis Cine and this year for the Aggies he was in the middle of it for five-star defensive lineman Walter Nolen and Deyon Bouie. Meanwhile Tony Jerod-Eddie (who played for the Aggies) made an impact on five-star cornerback Denver Harris and Top247 defensive lineman Anthony Lucas.

“A lot of these guys are young,” Marquez said of the importance of the off-field recruiters have alongside the coaches. “They understand the kids a little bit more. A lot of them played the game too so they know what it takes to get to the next level.”

Former high school coach makes quick impact in Austin

Horns247 insider Mike Roach called Chris Gilbert “a pillar of the Texas High School Coaches Association,” when he broke the story that Steve Sarkisian was hiring him as the Director of High School Relations in February. The long-time successful high school coach made a big impact on this Longhorns class that finished No. 5 nationally assisting in the recruitment of five-star offensive lineman Devon Campbell, Top247 cornerback Terrance Brooks and several others.

“Coach Gilbert was the hugest,” Campbell’s uncle also named Devon told 247Sports. “Coach Gilbert I’m trying to find the right words, there are so many great words to say about him. His communication, his knowledge, down to earth, very caring, very straight forward was available at all times no matter what time I was able to call, always able to pick up the phone or respond to every text message. He’s one of the best, if not thee best, one of the best. He did a great job recruiting my nephew and recruiting those other guys that came into UT’s fold.”

Keenan Bailey crushing it at Ohio State

The quality control coach for the Buckeyes goes hard for the Big Ten powerhouse on the trail and was very instrumental in OSU landing Top247 receiver Kaleb Brown out of the Chicagoland. He helps recruit all the skill players and was helpful in landing Top247 receiver Kyion Grayes and another South Florida native, with those connections he was basically the lead recruiter for four-star cornerback Ryan Turner.

Penn State class gets a boost from two off-field guys

For the second time in the James Franklin era the Nittany Lions finished No. 6 in the standings matching the 2018 class highlighted by Micah Parsons, Odafe Oweh and Rasheed Walker. They’re hoping they have the program’s next great pass rusher in five-star edge Dani Dennis-Sutton who chose the Nittany Lions over Georgia and Alabama. Dennis-Sutton is perhaps somewhere in the SEC if Kenny Sanders isn’t back at Penn State helping.

“It was a big get bring him back home,” Franklin told 247Sports. Sanders was last at Oregon working for Mario Cristobal before returning to Happy Valley.

Franklin also highlighted getting Alan Zemaitis on staff, a former letter-winner for the Nittany Lions who helped land four-star defensive lineman Zane Durant out of South Florida and four-star cornerback Cam Miller from Jacksonville.

Chad Bowden helps Notre Dame net nation’s No. 7 class

The Irish saw a Top10 class come together and Program Director Chad Bowden deserves recognition as part of that haul which included class jewell Jaylen Sneed.

“All those kids love Chad Bowden,” Sneed’s high school coach BJ Payne said. “His energy, his excitement, he relates to kids so well. He was a pivotal piece. Obviously it was him and Marcus (Freeman) but like I told a couple people that I think Chad doesn’t get the recognition he deserves at times. He’s absolutely phenomenal. The way he keeps a schedule with all the kids they recruit. He’s just very real and his energy levels are through the roof. His ability to relate to kids, players, parents, they all love Chad.

Bowden was in the middle of it for Top247 linebacker Niuafe Tuihalamaka and cornerback Jayden Bellamy as well.

Courtney Morgan made a quick impact at his alma mater

Morgan wasn’t at Michigan long, already taking a job at Washington as the Director of Player Personnel, but in his one cycle back in Ann Arbor he was in the middle of the Maize and Blue’s efforts to land Top247 safety’s Zeke Berry and Keon Sabb along with four-star defensive lineman Mason Graham among a few others.

One of the staffers told 247Sports that Christina DeRuyter played a huge part in the nation’s No. 9 class.

Quick Hitters Beyond The Top10

Glancing around the Top25…

North Carolina has an ace in the hole in Director of Recruiting Alex White. One of her colleagues tells 247Sports was impactful in the courtship of Top247 linebacker Sebastian Cheeks and she was also valuable in recruiting five-star offensive tackle Zach Rice and five-star defensive lineman Travis Shaw.

“We loved Alex and Zach felt very comfortable with her,” Mary Rice, Zach’s mother said. “They would stay in touch. She was I’d say huge. The comfort level that she helped provide and answering questions, she really made it help feel like a family atmosphere. The support, she’s a very, genuine sweet person, it comes out.”

Levorn Harbin was a factor for all of Tennessee’s defensive targets and was a major reason why coveted edge rusher James Pearce put pen to paper during the Early Signing Period.

Chase Clark was in the middle of it for Shemar James in helping Florida win out twice including in the end for the Top247 linebacker from Alabama.

Florida State probably doesn’t land Top247 quarterback without Director of High School Relations Ryan Bartow on the staff.

“One-hundred percent pivotal,” Pete Duffy, AJ’s dad stated. “Big time. Relentless, sincere, really knows what he’s talking about and truthful.”

Long-time coaching veteran Noah Joseph was a major glue piece of a Missouri class that finished No. 14, its highest in the standings in 247Sports history.

“He did a lot for us, just in terms of talking to everybody,” one of Joseph’s colleagues said. “These late round guys we got, he was all about it. He helped with every single position and every single recruit. He’d talk to them the most. He went on the road when our coaches were moving around and saw a bunch of kids.”

Indiana check in at No. 21 including seven signed from the state of Florida. Head coach Tom Allen told 247Sports that his Director of Player Personnel and High School Relations Kevin Mashack had a lot to do with that. Mashack is from South Florida.

Arizona Director of Player Personnel Matt Doherty oversaw the Wildcats infrastructure in helping the Pac 12 program finish with its best recruiting class in 247Sports history, sitting at No. 22 and No. 2 in the conference.

One more that deserves recognition

James Blanchard was an impact guy for two Big 12 programs, beginning at Baylor where he discovered four-star edge rusher Kaian Roberts-Day and offered him a scholarship before he even had a recruiting profile on any network. He then went to Texas Tech as Joey McGuire's right hand man and before the Red Raiders had a staff together was the other guy making all the calls next to McGuire.

Thank God. This guy knows how to gram and TikTok y’all. For all you olds out there it’s not so easy. Sure, you’re putting out drills or updates to recruits but you’re putting your whole style and personality on display too, but subtly.

This dude doesn’t just speak the language, hes legitimately good at it. We need to be thankful. Seriously, donate an extra bit at collection this Sunday.
