This will become more relevant (loved/hated) as the years go by.

quin·tes·sen·tial
ˌkwin(t)əˈsen(t)SHəl/
adjective
adjective: quintessential
  1. representing the most perfect or typical example of a quality or class.

I'd go with No Country for Old Men to fit that definition.  Think it's a perfect example of our society's appetite for violent entertainment.

For one that represents the human condition in the 21st century.  Punch  Drunk Love.

tte etite for ies

17.5 years into this century and you want the quintessential  movie of it, GTFO

It’s gotta be whichever movie has the most complete compilation of the following criteria:

1) Reboot of old movie franchise

2)Fourth or fifth sequel of said reboot

3)Based on a comic book

4)Not actually a great movie, but tons of hype and hoopla

As in it represents current society or represents the prevailing tastes of moviegoers? Because if it’s the second, gotta be a fucking superhero movie

If that’s your criteria, you’re gonna have to wait a few years for D.C. to pump out more movies.

The Last Jedi:

* it completely sucked

* the story was tertiary to Diversity! and fan service

* people got fucking up in arms defending/attacking it on the Internet

If that doesn't sum up the 21st century thus far, nothing does

It didn't suck.

The last 2 points are spot on, so spot on you didn't need the first point.

This. Just pick one. Quintessential doesn't mean great, just defining.

It would most likely be a marvel comic flick with multiple hero characters. One of the Avengers sequels, probably..

Going by the definition, I'd say Wall-E.
